B/W does offer better impact and better story telling effect and the quote by LW Howard summed it up well. It took me a long while to appreciate B/W. I reckoned its an acquired taste like durian. Once you loved it, it grips on you. The interesting part is to choose the right composition that is suitable for B/W as not all pic will be suitable (eg. covering a snooker tournament game, haha).

My workflow now is firstly to identify pic that is suitable for B/W conversion. (I embraced this about a yr.+ ago). If it doesn't offer any impact, than it is “relegated” to colour. The real challenge in mono is the search/tweaking into various shades, texture and tone where my time was immersed over that of colour. Nik Silver Efex can do a pretty job over PS in this respect.

I just realised, after seeing this photo, who was the fellow who kicked me from behind while I was trying so hard to jump more than 6 inches off the ground!
No wonder I felt something on my back! LOL...

Day 3: From Abu Simbel back to Aswan...

Ok guys, you all continue to post your photos, and I just inch forward a little bit here.
As we continue to watch with intense interest how the protest and breaking in of the Embassy in Cairo is developing (since 3 days back), we began to perhaps understand a little more how the unrest has affected (well, to a certain extent good and to a certain other extent, bad) our trip to Egypt. But with situations deteriorating, it would come as no surprise that the tourism industry and all the related services in Egypt would be affected.

So, as we move along...

I have a crazy like (which I found out while in Egypt) for shooting some structures with some hieroglyphic writings on them in the foreground and one or couple of our team members in the background. Here is our portrait master AlexK looking for his model...

Vngks - thanks, man! You have given us at least a chance to re-view the interior of the Temple. So that whenever we want to we can always come back here on this thread to see Abu Simbel's outside and inside. Again. Somehow I have a feeling that there being absolutely no other visitors in Abu Simbel that day, if we gave that sole guard suficient baksheesh, we all would have had a field day shooting (without flash of course) inside the temple.

Acpical - you've outdone yourself, friend! Your labelled photo and history have given all of use a good headsup to Abu Simbel. Even where the head and chest rolled off to during the earthquake you also have numbered for us. Shukran!

Themageman - your shots are lovely. Hope to see more of shots!

Now AlexK - where are more of your portrait shots of this exotic people? Not to mention your landscape shots of Abu Simbel. I am sure you have some unique angles there! Also also don't forget Lai Peng's twin Nex5 gun - share with us her shots leh!

Dinosour - you have a very special camera (from what our balloon pilot Amr said). I'm looking forward to the moving pictures made by this special camera in addition to those made by your other more special cameras!

But he pointed Acpical, SereneXMM and I towards a track that was in the opposite direction to where every one else was walking.
So we three poor thing ended up walking a longer distance round the compound, giving us an opportunity to see the backside of King Ramses II's temple.

It was very very hot and tiring to walk up the slope at the back side of the King. We saw this.

Maybe this track leads to a small rectangular opening at the back of the temple here...

Acpical he was saying to me if he has time he would have climbed all the way up to that small rectangular window and enter the temple from behind very much like the way he and Adrian penetrated the Red Pyramid two days before. He is such a greedy pharaoh. Every time he sees an opening, he just wants to get in. Next time I will just leave him to the Mummies to handle. LOL...!

Hot and thirsty at Abu Simbel...


Wow. We finally made it back up to the entrance.
Looks like we were the only visitors for the day.
So ok lah. Support support the local industry. Quick, let's grab some soft drinks to gulp down our gullet before we board our bus.

Actually hor, what Hassan said was very true.
It was already 4pm. Although it didn't strike me at that point in time, in retrospect I began to understand that it would take us another four hours plus on the bus to arrive back in Aswan. And even with an armed guard around, I think no Egyptian driver nor Egyptian guide wants to risk cheong-ing through the empty roads of the south in the dark of the night.

So off we went, back to Aswan.

We were all beginning to fall asleep on the bus, when suddenly someone discovered the round round yolk of sunset rapidly descending on the horizon and gave a yelp of exclamation. Adrian and Melvin were very good. And they made a right at that moment decision to do a quick stop of the bus so that we can take some pot shots at the yolk to bring back home for mooncakes (it's Mid-Autumn Festival today 12 Sep 2011 mah, don't forget...).

Anyway, Hassan the guide was again leg-soft, hand-soft in having to de-bus this bunch of photo-crazed travellers.
This must be the first time he encountered such a fanatical group of photo-chasers.
Still, he took the maximum precaution, warning us to cross the road together, although I couldn't see a single vehicle for miles on both directions of the long, straight road.. LOL..
