Day 1 - Dinner at Bamboo Club, Thamel, Kathmandu

Allow me to just bring the travel account to dinner on the first night for now, as we wait for the rest of the team members to get ready their pictures.

Our dinner destination for the night was at a nice restaurant called Bamboo Club, located only minutes away from our hotel by foot, along the Bhagwoti Marg (Bhagwoti Road).

How can we forget....Everest Beer!!!

Yes, indeed. Chomolungma was kind to us upon witnessing how we pulled ourselves out from bed at 2.30am in the freezing morning and trek up (panting all the way) the many steps to witness its majestic splendour basking in the moonlight and then Chomolungma's beauty finally revealed with the rising Sun, as it sits silently with its sisters, the Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam in the distance...

Legend of Swayambhunath
A golden spire crowning a conical wooded hill, Swayambhunath Stupa is the most ancient and enigmatic of all the holy shrines in Kathmandu valley. Its lofty white dome and glittering golden spire are visible for many miles and from all sides of the valley. Historical records found on a stone inscription give evidence that the stupa was already an important Buddhist pilgrimage destination by the 5th century AD. Its origins however, date to a much earlier time, long before the arrival of Buddhism into the valley. A collection of legends about the site, the 15th century Swayambhu Purana, tells of a miraculous lotus, planted by a past Buddha, which blossomed from the lake that once covered Kathmandu valley. The lotus mysteriously radiated a brilliant light, and the name of the place came to be Swayambhu, meaning 'Self-Created or Self-Existent'. Saints, sages and divinities traveled to the lake to venerate this miraculous light for its power in granting enlightenment. During this time, the Bodhisatva Manjushri was meditating at the sacred mountain of Wu Tai Shan and had a vision of the dazzling Swayambhu light. Manjushri flew across the mountains of China and Tibet upon his blue lion to worship the lotus. Deeply impressed by the power of the radiant light, Manjushri felt that if the water were drained out of the lake Swayambhu would become more easily accessible to human pilgrims. With a great sword Manjushri cut a gorge in the mountains surrounding the lake. The water, draining away, left the valley of present day Kathmandu. The lotus was then transformed into a hill and the light became the Swayabhunath Stupa.

On virtually every stupa in Nepal, there are giant pairs of eyes staring out from the four sides of the main tower.

These are Buddha Eyes (also known as Wisdom Eyes), and they look out in the four directions to symbolize the omniscience (all-seeing) of a Buddha.

The Buddha eyes are so prevalent throughout the country that they have become a symbol of Nepal itself.

Between the Buddha's eyes where the nose would be is a curly symbol that looks like question mark.

This is the Nepali character for the number 1, which symbolizes unity of all the things as well as the one way to reach enlightenment—through the Buddha's teachings.

Above this is a third eye, symbolizing the all-seeing wisdom of the Buddha.

AlexK, you are correct. Wkcheah certainly did loads and loads of homework.
You should have seen the way he read the Jamling Tenzing Norgay book all through the trip and repeated what he learned from inside that book to all of us.
He is a walking encyclopedia, this wkcheah!

To the band of travelers who finally got what they asked for...
10 sure signs you are missing Lukla already:
1) You say Namaste to the Char Kway Teow Auntie
2) You reach for your walking stick instead of your car keys in the morning
3) You order Egg Vege Fried Rice or Chow Mein instead of Hor Fun at your fav Zi Char
4) You keep looking over shoulder to see if Melvin is hot on your arse
5) You dun give 2 hoots at the dog **** right in front of you...simply sidestepping it
6) You realised you walked to work w/o your car
7) You realised you have climbed 10 floors to your office, forgetting there is the lift
8) You laugh at your friends when they say Bt Timah is siong
9) You start fantasizing that ABC and EBC is actually possible
10) And lastly, ARE YOU surfing SGTrekkers Website for more backbreaking treks already? Betcha!!!
