SGTrekker 10D9N Everest Panorama Trek (17-26 March 2011)

100. Finally the day is over for us, on the way back to Hotel we saw these 2 ladies discussing their Holi experience. I just had a quick chat with them and from there I came to know that they came from China for holiday :)

I feel my skin much smoother after the Holi festival ahhaaha
Appart from that, our porter also telling the locals will use this dung as firewood.... so if you eat something in Nepal and it smells s**t, you know from where the smell came from ahhahaha

101. Day 4 attempt 3 to fly to Lukla.
Once we reach the airport, not long after that we were escorted to the bus that will bring us to the plane. We are cheering like anything on the bus, but later on they say there's a strong wind Lukla so the flight got delayed....and we have to wait in the lovely lounge again....this explain why everyone looks so down and frustrated ;p

102. Finally we are flying for real. I was on the 2nd group that supposed to fly a few minutes later after the 1st group, but due to some 'technical' issue on 1st group, we will depart first...yeay !!!! (or is it too early to cheer)

103. Finally we are inside the plane and the stewardess starts distributing candy and ear cotton buds.....

106. The flight were quite smooth and everyone start taking picture like anything from the scratched window plane....
btw you can do whatever you want inside the plane
- No one informing you to switch off mobile phone prior to take off
- One of us standing and recording near the cockpit during landing !!!
- Nobody cares about your seatbelt during the flight
I would say it's a totally different experience flying with Agni Air to Lukla hahahah

107. We can still see the morning mist revealing it's layer one by one

108. This picture gives me a feeling that the engine is stop and we about to fall down like kamikaze hehehe

109. Roads looks small from the top

110. Just when we thought the flight is smooth, suddenly it become so bumpy like we are about to go down and hit the land....it's scarier than the 3rd fastest or 6th highest roller coaster in the world that I ever ride....
Our tiny plane trapped in the strong wind and not able to proceed further, we left with no choice but to go back to Kathmandu and wait for the wind to subside before we can try again....
After 3 attempts we are soooo close to Lukla, but chomolungma (Everest) still not allowing us to touch her :(

This is the shot of Everest (covered by clouds) during the super bumpy ride. After this shot I put the camera down, pray hard and calm myself hoping I can see another day...yup the experience is that scary :)

111. It's day 5 and it's our 4th attempt to fly to Lukla. If today's flight also canceled we have to cancel the whole Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek and proceed to pokhara to do Anapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek instead.
When we reach airport we got confirmation that the weather in both side Kathmandu and Lukla, however due to some issues we have to change our carrier from Agni Air to Sita Air (Sita Air apparently just had an accident the day before, the day where we have to turn back to Kathmandu)

Note to everyone: when you purchase a domestic flight ticket in Kathmandu, make sure to always do confirmation before the flight, else ur name might not be in the list.....or they'll put your name at the bottom of the list...that's what happen to us with Agni Air !!

112. The engine is at full throttle and ready to take off

113. Finally we are leaving the crowded, heavily polluted city to get some fresh mountain air
225774_10150180304783158_540263157_6826790_265818_n.jpg

114. Within few minutes the view has changed from noisy city to calm mountainous plateau.

115. The are just toooo many mountains along the plane route.... and if I'm not mistake, this is the might Everest
222786_10150180304948158_540263157_6826793_7344115_n.jpg

116. I really can't count how many mountains are there in Himalaya, you can see all kinds of mountain...from mountain with forest, slightly brown color until freezing white peaks
222532_10150180305013158_540263157_6826795_5358269_n.jpg

117. I personally like this picture, the selection of focus point somehow gives impression that the mountains doesn't look that huge

118. Our plane silhouette, approaching the land
228139_10150180305208158_540263157_6826800_1586751_n.jpg

119. The landing strip is built on the steep incline of a hillside. Its length is 420 m (normal airport length is more than 2000m) and width 20m and the runway incline is a staggering 12%.
Landing and taking off in Lukla leaves no room for error. Pilots throw their propellers into hard reverse before they touch down and gun the engines as they race down the hill for takeoff. The strip is at an elevation of 2800 m with a an abrupt drop off down to a river valley below. The approach is through a maze of spectacular mountain peaks and the air is often cluttered with clouds.
There is a big hill right behind the landing strip. You also need to clear a high ridge, bank left, descend steeply, straighten the airplane and land. Navigation is by sight only and you need to negotiate several layers of clouds which can hang on the high hill or rise from the deep valley. This is why flights will often be cancelled and you could be stuck in Lukla waiting for a plane for days on end.
If this is worrying you one comforting thought is that only the most experienced pilots in Nepal are flying to Lukla.

120. You can see that as soon as the plane take off, it should immediately make a deep left turn to avoid the big hill in front of it :sweat:

121. From this angle, the 420m distance seems to be quite long...but is it ??

122. After jumping with joy that we managed to land safely, we immediately go to have our simple hearty lunch.....
But...as purist shutterbugs, we can just sit still while waiting for our lunch... so we start snapping the locals.
In this picture, she's drying the clothes when I'm trying to take her picture.

There are differences in facial feature between Nepalis in Kathmandu and Himalaya Area

124. Dropkyo
After we finish our lunch, finally our restless foot can't wait any longer to start the trek. Along the track, this animals are one of our fellow companion. Dropkyo were a mix-bred between Yak and Cow.
Yak live well at altitudes of 3000m and above, while Dropkyo can live below that level.

125. One thing I notice from the people in the mountain....their cheeks are burned and cracked by high UV in the mountain, this happens even to the baby also

126. This splendid vista convinced us that an exciting adventure are waiting for us.....
