Hi all,
First of all, i got the EX1! My reviews would be based on other buying patterns than picture quality(i have color defeicency).
Got it at the mini electronic n consumer fair at expo during 22 Oct weekend. Pricing was $619 including 2 X 8gb card, casing, extra battery and some lens cleaning kit plus mini tripod.
Could have got it at $599 payment by credit card but i wanted to do instalment plan so no choice. From Audio House Marketing.
Secondly, i am really new to photography so i wont be able to give any picture reviews. The reason i wanted a new camera was that a few weeks ago, i went to Universal Studios After Hours ($5 per pax and can only go in after 7pm to a small area). Brought my small compact Sony along. At the studio, most shots didnt turn out well so that was it. Not sure whether it was due to skills but my brother who is into photography advise me getting a prosumer instead.
I started researching from then on and spent abt a week plus before deciding. comparison was at first getting a canon dslr which i could share lens with my brother or getting either lx5,s95,g12, sony nex series, olympus pen and the list goes on. Finally decided that dslr is out as i wanted one that i can carry around easily.
Frankly, photography is not one of my interest and due to my color defiecencies, i couldnt really tell how good or bad and the difference from the samples of each camera in the reviews that i read. My decision was then based on the specs, the looks & feel and pricing.
I decided that i shouldnt get one with interchanging lens as i really do not want to be spending so much on lens. Getting the nex or even olympus pen or GF1, i would be spending so much more than my initial thoughts. They are more expensive as well.
Then it was narrowed down to EX1, LX5,G12, and S95. As i couldnt see colors well (for those who do not have color problems and have iphone, you can get apps from apple store ,search for colors, and some of those apps would allow you to see how a color deficient person sees the world), my comparison would be different.
I hold on to the G12 and found it to be a bit bulky. My thoughts were: Would i bring this around wherever i go? Then i went on to S95. Some of my galfrens were using S90 and they commented that it was good bringing around in their handbags. S95 can fit into my pocket easily but it was a bit too small for gripping. Comparing the specs of S95 & LX5, my thoughts were probably the LX5 could be a better buy due to the history of LX3 and price was about $100 difference if i remembered correctly. Then the LX5. Wow....the white looks good. Tried holding it and it was quite comfy too. Last stop,EX1. Fell in love with gray display set. Nice outlook, weight distribution was even better and grip was also better than LX5. Best of all, the swivel amoled screen. My wife-to-be loves taking photos of us but we always didnt get good shots as we could not see the angle from our compact so the swivel screen does help.
Tough choice now. LX5 or EX1? Both comes with 2 X 8gb and all the freebies except for 2nd battery. Pricing was around $150 difference. i needed 2nd battery as i always like to have a spare and i remembered something about LX5 must use original battery else the camera wont start up. Not sure how true but did not want to take any risk as well.
Being new to cameras, i chose the EX1 as i thought it looks better, strong & refine, swivel screen, free 2nd battery and the brochure was quite impressive.
Sorry if my review is not as good as from other brothers/sisters around here as i really know nuts about photography and i have a color deficient problem. Picture quality, in terms of colors, really matters little to me as long as i can take decent photos. Pricing do play an important part in my decision though the price difference if splitted into 12 months installment might be minimal but i do want to save a bit here & there. I hope this review would help others like me.
Finally after playing around for a while, my brother commented that the colors were not as sharp as the LX5 & G12 and also i noticed some limitations on raw conversion and system settings when raw is chosen. I do not know how to balance colors so i am using jpeg most of the time.
Thanks for this forum and review thread. It has helped me a lot.
