Though this time round, the shots are abit under exposed (didnt want the sky to be heavily blown), the result are similar as those shots I took at Plaza Sing (see post #184 in page 10 of this thread). So unless I dam suay, both EX1 I used are lemon, I am convinced beyond doubt the difference in the performance of both cameras.

At ISO-800, the differences remained unchanged.

So, does that means LX3 applied more sharpening, saturation & contrast with when these parameters are set to 0, as compare to EX1? Or is the lens on LX3 really sharper & contrasty?

Sharpness, Saturation & Contrast are personal preference as well as relative (when compared to another camera), if EX1 owners expect jpeg right out of their camera to match LX3, the parameters has to be adjusted.

Also, Ed told me EX1 16:9 aspect ratio is cropping the top and bottom portions of the sensor, much like the LX1 & LX2, so when shooting in 16:9 aspect ratio, the file size is smaller than when shooting in 4:3 or 3:2.

LX3 sensor native aspect ratio is 16:9, so when shooting in 4:3 or 3:2, the sensor will be crop.

i too for one felt my old lx3 was sharper than my ex1..but still lovin the ex1 for the swivel screen n ergonomics

There is always love n hate on this cam. In the end still up to one self to make the judgement.

Hi Dennis,

tks for the comparison shots between EX1 and LX3, useful for people considering to buy one of these 2 cameras.

slight correction on the sensor cropping for LX3 though. in LX1-LX2 days, what was mentioned in your post was true. But in the LX3 case, shooting in 4:3, 3:2 and 16:9, the images are all cropped.

4:3, sides are cropped. 16:9, top and bottom are cropped. 3:2, abit of the top and abit of the sides cropped. This is how LX3 maintains a common 10MP image across all 3 aspect ratios.

not sure if the dpreview image will show here, scroll to the middle of the dpreview review and you will be able to see the explanation.

EX1 leaves more rooms for PP so the default sharpness, saturation & contrast are applied lightly to the jpeg and RAW. It's just personal preference. You may adjust the default settings according to your preference.

The EX1 photo above doesn't have obvious noises at ISO400??

It does not have that obvious noise but all photo look so "unsharp". Im not sure about you but spending time doing PP on all jpeg is a killer and wasting time. If want to shoot RAW for better performance, the image conversion have to done in Samsung's CD, then transport to CS. Don't you think its very troublesome?

Anyway is personal preference. Like what i mention, some will love it, some will hate it.

Ps: off the record, take note on those nite shoots you are doing, most of them are total dark. Can't see any detail. Try play with setting more.

The sharpness can be adjusted at the Menu before you take the photos. Not an issue. I very seldom do PP unless it is necessary. I did more PP when I used other compact cameras last time.
Those night shoots were taken in real dark situations without any help of flash tool. When I view them on my Sony laptop and iMac, I still can see some details, but I view them on my office monitor, they are dark. I'm not sure if this is the graphic card issue.

The effort of doing comparison between LX3 and EX1 is good but not good enough because the aspect ratios are not the same. Not sure how it would affect the outcome of the comparison. Only the professionals will know.

Some how, im not surprise this comment to come out from you. Matter of fact, im glad you brought this up. :bsmilie: Expect ratio should not have any issue with the outcome. Cos both camera still crop to get the ratio output. right at the center of the pic should not defer much.

True we are not professionals, but those ppl in Dpreview also display the same output. No hard feeling, but i think the hands-on and review have done its share. This camera does not even meet my standard.

but of course, like say, its my view. HAve fun shooting.

Based on the comparison above, LX3 doesn't meet my standard as the noise is so obvious(a big turnoff) at ISO400. EX1 has done better job at noise reduction. The sharpness, saturation and contrast can be set upfront at the Menu screen before shooting, but the noise level cannot be set.
What important things are the noise level, white balance and blur level. The sharpness, saturation and contrast are more personal preferences(the camera can let you decide and adjust) instead of camera and lens ability.

Good, true noise level cannot be set. I 100% agreed. Of course Ex1 win cos its production 2010 not 2 years back. Technology different.

I have to thank TS for such a wonderful outing and hands on with EX1 and also open such an interesting post where ppl can share and comment. Keep up the good work TS.

As what Poky pork will say " That's all Folks " ...

Have fun shooting :)

pls refer to the animated image in ricleo's post. do u still think the aspect ration is a factor for the portions i cropped?

if it makes u feel better, i can always crop off the top and bottom of the original image from E1 to get 16:9, which is what the camera does, than i crop 20%. but i really do see any difference it will make.

:bsmilie: kekeke to my untrained eye.... the difference is negligible and not worth debating ....

btw I had NO part to play in the tests ... too busy chatting chatting up a couple of stevedores at the next table and eating chick peas ha ha !

may be i have too much expectations for the EX1, cause i m really hoping it can be a LX3 with swivel screen. i was disappointed with EX1 after i confirm its performance with the 2nd round of test.

than i look forward to panasonic to have a LX3 replacement (with swivel screen), but alamak, they come out with LX5, no swivel screen still. really cant understand why they have it this way.:dunno:

now have to wait another 2yrs for panasonic to hopefully launch a LX5 replacement with swivel screen.
