sry to OT.. comparin e above S2 shot wif tis frm a 350D. certainly do miss e slight bit of zoom of e S2.. and definitely e IS. at 320mm, alittle shake wld render image blur already.. e IS does help to quite an extend for e 432mm of e S2.

Hi cerebrus, some noob questions:

1. DCR250 is a super macro lens, can we shoot tele-macro with it? Or can only shoot up close?
2. Can I use DCR250 for normal shooting? To take advantage of the shallo DOF?

Thanks!

The DCR 250 gives a really thin DOF.

C&C most welcome. I'll prob post some of the macros at the critique corner as well for some brutal comments. All shots taken with Raynox DCR250 on my S3
like cerebrus has mentioned, sharpness in e eyes of bugs and spiders make or break shots.. alot of ur shots lack sharpness. though i muz say e composition is rather gd.. and ur captions compliment e pics. well. esp. for #1.. it does indeed look like e spider is prayin, watz wif its coloration and raised 'arms'.
nice try neways.. hope to see more shots from u comin.

Again. C&C most welcome.
sry to criticize.. but these are two v. plain shots.
however, e first one wld haf been nice if u had shot it earlier, when dere's a sunset on e horizon or smth.. den e left side wld nt be dere bare.
#2 does nt leave much of an impression on me either.. watz ur main focus in tis pic.? a typical neighbourhood on a moonlit night?

hahaz.. nopez. it juz happened dat both of them are always at e same spot.. almost at e same timin too. :bsmilie:
well, for me, i normally shoot in e zoo.. so, dere's not much of lens changin for me to do. juz stick wif my 70-200.. rather convenient. it wld be a headache if i had gotten a macro lens as e zoo does offer a wide range of bugs to shoot.. tis is when i miss e convenience of e S2. all i nid to do is to fix my 250D close-up lens and i am ready to shoot.. now i can only fix it on my kit lens which has short range so e magnification is v. small. no pnt. shootin macro..
if e main issue facin u is convenience of shootin, den shoot wif ur S3 first and see which range u normally use at e places u frequent.. den when u go dere, use a lens of similar range. i wld readily forgo convenience for quality.. and if u wan a greater hand in PP, shootin in RAW is really helpful. when u use dat, u wld nt wan to shoot wif JPEG anymore.. as i've heard, u can edit up to 3 stops.
hope tis helps u..

wat u mean telemacro? for my 250D, i can zoom all e way and shoot frm a particular distance.. haf to sway back and forth to get e subject sharp though.. and it canT be used for normal shootin coz it canT focus after a particular distance.
datz juz for my close-up lens.. nt too sure abt. e DCR250.

Raw can edit up to 3 stops!! That's is nice esp for bad photographer like me....PP is important.:)

thanks for the tips bro.

Heh, I was trying to find a cheapo way to may my S3 get thin DOF with normal shot....I find the DOF of S3 for normal shot too deep....:(

DCR250 can only be used to shoot small stuff like insects at quite short distance. Cannot be used for like human shots. I was also looking for a way to get shallow DOF for normal non macro shots (like human) but so far based on what I have found out and read... looks like the limitation is on the small sensor chip in our S2/S3 (which is the same prob with most of the P&S). Looks like we need to save up for DSLR... :P

Nice shots! I like the composition and subject of #1.

One thing, the DCR 250 gives a really thin DOF. What I normally do is fire burst mode, so that at least one of my shots comes out focused at the right spot. For insect macros, you need to get the eyes in focus. Also, you really need alot of light to get clear shots. Some of your shots seem to be suffering from handshake. Unfortunatly, you cannot use the onboard flash, as the lens normally will block it. I made a flash diffuser with a film canister, that seems to help at times. Best is to get a slave flash.

Thanks for the advice. I did realise that I need more light cos of the highly mag images being very prone to hand shake. I also did an improvised device to allow the onboard flash to be used without the shadow prob (prob similar in concept to your film canister one) However, I can only choose between flash or burst shots (which I used previously without flash but found I have better luck getting clearer shots with flash than with burst). Any way to burst with flash? :dunno:

Thanks for your feedback NightZ88! I am still trying all sorts of techniques to try to get sharper images. Still not really getting it. I'll keep trying but next 3 week reservist... so prob no chance... I'll be back!

No need to apologize. These were taken a few weeks back and initially felt there were not too good and did not post. But yesterday, I thot I should just get some feedback so that I can learn how to improve them.
#1 there was actually a crescent moon in the sky. But after trying out a few shots, WA looked better to me, causing the moon to be so small most pple prob did not notice it.
I shot #2 cos the moon looked beautiful that night... but somehow was not really able to bring it out on the pic.

Some like it RAW...

Yeah, RAW mode is really good. You can play with white balance, exposure etc etc. You just need time to sit down & PP.

I'm definitely open to C&C, I have learnt a lot from this forum since I joined. Only downside is the BnB virus. I've probably spent more on accessories than the S3 itself so far. :embrass: Thanks again for the encouragement.

From my old photos taken by S2 IS.
Adjust curve to brighten the shadow area and desaturated the photo a bit to get it more natural.
The edge looks soft due to Raynox wide-angle converter.

Yah, S3 sensor is about 6X4mm only...

think the flash can't charge up so quickly...

While RAW may offer great post processing opportunities, it is important to get the composition and exposure correct right from the start. If through using RAW you can edit a mediocre picture into a decent picture, a good picture from the start would become a stunning one after post processing.

Post processing should be used as a tool to enhance pictures, and we should not over-rely on it to make up for bad composition and technical skills.
