Ricoh GXR! - Season II

Guys, I didn't know there are so much writers/bloggers that uses the Ricoh system.

The A12 50mm can be a little slow and focusing may hunt a bit in low light and in macro mode, but I feel that the image quality given its size is simply quite excellent.

Don't you think the GR lenses rocks? I think I am going to hold onto these lenses for awhile longer ... ;-P

Kenny, its not just sharp. the bokeh is juicy too.

Nic, How not to? I don't macro these days. Mostly still-life, probably from iPhone. But once in awhile, something a little better image quality wise would be useful. Staying put! But it looks like you are moving out of Ricoh. Hopeful you stay in this community for a bit, maybe as a Pentaxian?

i still have my ricoh, even if i change toys, i will stay with this friendly community

I was taking some landscape shots with the GXRM the other night. On Aperture priority, the shutter speed never went lower than 1 sec, resulting in some udnerexposure. It was alreight on manual.

Any advice how this can be resolved?

it's a "feature" :) M mode can extend to 180sec. You can use the exposure meter on bottom left to help in the metering, roughly or histogram or of course an external light meter.

Thanks wonglp. Yes the M mode is great. However for night landscapes/cityscapes, I need shutter speeds of perhaps up to 8 secs max. I would prefer to use A mode but if the slowest is 1 sec, I guess I will have to switch to M.

BTW I personally think the GXR M is probably one of the most under-rated cameras, especially with M lenses.

You're welcome! Yes, no doubt about that for me as well:) There's some crispiness of what I get with GXR that i don't seem to get with OMD, not to mention the brilliant star burst of CV12! Minor adjustment of jpeg vivid mode.

Here's a couple more recent ones.

Near Shanghai Bund blue hour. All with Voigtlander 12mm/5.6 before the bridge (外白渡桥)lights turned on.

After blue hour, lights on.

I like the bokeh "balls" ... wish u had a model to shoot this shot, surrounded by the nokton's bokeh.

I tried this idea from a book on Ricoh GXR that I recently bought from Kino.

Convert the focal length on Ricoh A12 28mm to 21mm.

Its simple by looking at the photos below I posted all you need are Ricoh GW-2 and step up ring (40.5mm - 43mm).

Do take note to support the lens (GW-2) as it may strain the AF motor because it is more heavy on the front.

No screw-in filter can be used on GW-2 so this might be a down side for landscape photogs, you can use a lens cap though. (Hint: you might want to experiment using Lee or Cokin filters, I have not tried it bcos the GW-2 manual said the screw thread does not designed for filters...)

Nice, Sanfong... I don't think you need to AF with the 21mm, Just f5.6, or f8, and just whack.

My contribution this week.

So far the photos are acceptable to me. I don't really peek into corners cos it look alright to me too. I can't post photos here cos couldn't do enough justice than looking at my files directly. Maybe have chance show you during one gathering or outing. :)

yes, please. if quality is acceptable, i would also like to turn A12 28mm to 21mm.

Me too ... 21mm for Street up-close would be great. ;-)

Is there a menu to activate that the GW2 is attached and the scale-focus scales are seen on the screen corresponding to a 21mm?
