I think there is alot for me to learn right now, can't get the same consistency as I had when I borrowed phoakm's set during a photo shoot.
I'll post here if i have things I can't figure out.

It will work with 550EX and better than 580EX. I think because there are lesser light emit noise issues in old models.

Simple. Mini is a transmitter. Flex is a transciever (transmitter and receiver).

You can get 4 flex for 550EX and 1 STE. But Flex may look bulky on your camera.
I would normally get a Mini for my camera and remaining flashguns using Flex.
You can put the STE on the mini or Flex and on to the camera to control the flash power wirelessly.

Nope. You still need the STE to control the power of the slave flash. For my case, I will use another 580EXII to control the power, since I do not have the STE.

For mini and flex they do not control the power. Combined with STE or 580EXII, you can control the power unless you are getting the AC3 Controller from LPA.
