Thanks Darren.
Yes, I used 540 flash on body. Normally I'd point the flash at the same level as the flies (or other small bugs) so to avoid shadows under or behind their bodies. Aperture set to F8 to F11, sometimes even F16. Get as close as I can, and make sure the first shot is right on, otherwise the flash would scare the bugs away![]()
My tricks to shoot small bugs are:
1. focus to the right point
2. expose properly, avoid under or over exposed pics as much as you can
3. avoid or minimum shadows
4. enough DOF (smaller aperture)
5. for small bugs, get as close as possible (set the lens to minimum focus distance, move the camera back and forth to focus)
6. try to get it right on the first shot
7. no tripod, but monopod might help
8. be ready to sweat

I'm Bug-Eyed looking at your bug eye:thumbsup:
Excellent shots fengwei.
Good tips fengwei, but most importantly, these macros are ridiculously good!!!
Feng Wei, super steady hands, and fantastic macro shots.
thanks for the tips, fw. will keep practising and hope to approach your level some day!
1. focus to the right point - a matter of luck for me.. shoot more and hope there are keepers..
2. expose properly, avoid under or over exposed pics as much as you can - a bit of trial and error but not too difficult
3. avoid or minimum shadows - have to try to somehow get my flash off to the side to minimise the shadows
4. enough DOF (smaller aperture)
5. for small bugs, get as close as possible (set the lens to minimum focus distance, move the camera back and forth to focus) - this is daamn hard, must train the core abdominal and arm muscles
6. try to get it right on the first shot - yeah some insects will fly away at the mirror slap sound. maybe have to get K-7..
7. no tripod, but monopod might help - i think monopod will make things a lot easier too
8. be ready to sweat - :sweat::sweat:
And flowers... flowerpot.u miss the most important thing of all...
