Pictures from Nex-5N

Where did you focus at ? the eyes ? ...a narrow DOF could also be the cause.

That's probably the case f4, 27mm, 1/200sec. I find it a bit hard to focus using the LCD.

Anyway to ID the focus point ? Canon Digital Photo Professional software actually shows the focus point. Not sure if Sony's PMB software does, haven't installed it.

These shots are pretty impressive using 18-55mm kit lens.

Outdoor. 55mm F5.6, ISO400, 1/125sec, exposure +0.7 step, shot at 8MP.

Indoor. 51mm F5.0, ISO800, 1/60sec, exposure +0.0 step, shot at 8MP.

Shot with a NEX-5N and Pentax DA* 60-250 zoom at F4 250mm. ISO 100

Am I missing something? Realize my shots aren't as clear. Any specific settings, or post processing? Mine seems to lack the punchy colors

Sharpness is largely from the lens. While the Sony lenses aren't sharp in the corners, I showed previously that they are pretty sharp in the center, particularly if you stop down to about F4. Blurring is typically caused by shake (too low a shutter speed) or poor focus. If you want pinpoint focus, I suggest you turn on the manual focus assist to get a precise focus and keep to about 1/125s at least if you have shaky hands.

lens are usually sharpest at the center so dont put your subject too close to the edge, to sum it up
1) work on stable hand or higher shutter speed
2) watch your DOF
3) watch your focus point
4) too much cropping does not help also
5) too high ISO can also lose details

Tonight's moon is pretty. It looks a little blue on nex-5n with auto WB using 70-200vr2 handheld. Not much reach so 100% crop here

What format are you shooting? RAW or JPEG?

Go to creative mode and set standard: Contrast=0, Saturation=+2, Sharpness=+1 :)

Thanks, I did some Photoshopping to improve the quality but by default the settings is pretty pale. Will try your recommendation.

Good luck ! ...Anyway I've found a good use of the touch-screen ! ...use it to select your focus point by touching where you want the focus, works quite well in Video mode too.
I'm finding alot of little surprises as I play with this camera that makes me go "Woah ! thats something new and nice !" ...just discovered that this little baby got lens micro-adjustment for 30 lens

Actually I noticed, while walking around, I always accidentally touch the screen and it goes into Focus Tracking.
Also, the focus tracking don't always work ... it seems to jump about and not track my target object that accurately

I always off when walking around (dun want waste battery) and only turn on when actually want to shoot. Anyway if e camera is hanging in front of u and u keep ur hands to de sides it shouldn't touch de screen :)

af micro adjustment are meant to offset if your lens are consistently front or back focus especially if you have a fast lens where the dof is really shallow.
to do this properly, you need to have a test chart and mount the cam on a tripod and shoot focusing at the test chart.
there are a few methods to do this so if needed, you can google for them.

basically, unless you have fast lens and lens is consistently rear or front focus, you wont need to use this. after the adjustment, it can save the adjustment setting so next time you mount the lens, it will recall the setting. it has memory to save up to 30 lenses if you have 30 lenses that need af micro adjustments.

You got to learn to read my post properly ! 5N is not the first to incorporate touch-screen, I believe Panasonic was the first to incorporate it in their GH2 4/3 camera.
If you don't know what Micro-Adjustments is, then you obviously don't need it. Fooling around with the Micro-Adjustment setting could seriously screw up your camera !
Sigh ! ...Sometimes I don't blame sony for not giving such options for their prosumer level cameras.

These few shots are much sharper

What I meant was to use the touch focus on a stationary subject, the CDAF of the 5N will never be able to cope with a moving subject like the PDAF of the A55/A77.
The reason the focus seems to jump around is because CDAF is trying to find the edge of the subject with highest contrast.

not as bad as it sound, if you screw something up, just reset the cam :)
but i do agree that if you have to ask what this is, dont mess with it
