Strictly speaking, no. It depends on your intent. If u want a classic 'documentary' shot, then yes, it needs to be sharp.

If u want it to 'artistic' and u want to creatively make use of ambient light, coloured background and using large apertures to throw the bg out of focus (something like what Nadav Bagim had done in his fascinating 'wonderland' series), then the sky's the limits.

It shouldnt be just about compound eyes, head shots or something u find in nat geo. But it has to tell a story.

The shot of the JS is nice.

Know what you want to be the centre of attention. If the back-side is what you want to bring out in the frame, then compose it to be in that position. To me, the whole purpose of macro is to bring out the beauty of this little insect which is not visible to our normal life and we dun usually particularly get to see in details unless we bring out in that huge size from our macro magnification. I do appreciate the beauty of tack sharp JS. I dun know how to apprieciate the JS above. still I will not disagree with donald on JS above and that certain oof are beautiful.. I am for the tack sharp and dof insects and critters.

The reason why i like the JS is not cos its oof. That is clearly a user mistake. I like it cos of the composition. Cute little thing on one corner of a leaf staring at the photographer. Not magnified excessively till u see the hair and eyes.

Its like portraits. U wont gain any points for shooting a close-up of the model's nose hair :bsmilie: But a well composed shot of a pretty model in a natural, elegant pose can be very nice, even if its oof.

Its what we try to show sometimes and to go beyond documentary. Something i struggle with all the time when shooting macro :)

My humble sharing during today's macro trip with iittoo, doyle and gang

totally agree with you, Donald. I struggled more and made more mistakes than any one else with all d aluminium can as diffusers initially, etc. I discard more shots ie more out of focus shots, so it takes less space of my hard disk.. All in all, my misfoucs or oof shot rates are even higher, considering that my hand is not so firm now. composition is something I need to learn from u. Placing that litter critter on the corner, yes, I have that tot before...:) Hey,I am still learning. that is what art is..
