Pentax Luna New Year Promotion - K-7 for $13xx, Twin WR Kit Lenses for $439SGD!

I am making the final decision between K7 and D90; Just back from MS. My config is D90 + 18-200mm; 50mm f1.4 ~ S$2990; K7 with 18-250mm; 50mm f1.4 ~$2870. I tried both, but find it difficult to decide. The speed of Nikon seems fast and solid. K7 body is good. The pic quality seems to favor D90; but of course not apple to apple. Anyone can help who has experience with these 2 cameras? I m leaning towards Pentax; for both technology and spec; and D90 is almost 2 yrs old already. Of course lenses, unlikely to beat Nikon; though I am confused thoroughly by all the acronymns AF, AI, S, D, G... Pentax seems to have lesser number of lenses. Easier to make decision. If I get the double kid lens; my cost will be down by $400! Hmmm; maybe it makes sense! Pls advise, bruders and sisters

Both are good cameras. My advise is to look at what future purchases you want in the future see if either brand gives you what you want.
Example:
If you need a 200mm f2 and won't bat an eyelid paying for it, go for Nikon.


The K7 does have better fast access buttons, HDR, horizon tilt indicator, 100% viewfinder, On-camera shake reduction and weather sealing over the D90. And its cheaper too. I would say that new Pentax lens range is complete from 12mm to 300mm (do you need more?). Add to this all the older lenses that you can still find and you are very well covered all the way to 1000mm if you so require.. Quality of lenses are certainly a match for Nikon or Canon.

Man... you're in a tough decision-making spot indeed! I have the D90 and the K-x. Both are close in IQ at high ISOs... with a slight edge to the K-x as the ISOs climb (for JPEGs straight out of the camera only). The D90 is a better camera body, though... but I wouldn't really call it a PRO body.

I use the 50mm f/1.8 D on my D90. Its an excellent lens available brand-new today for about USD $100 - give or take a little. How often would you use your 50mm at f1.4 indoors on our K7? Between f1.4 and f1.8, its just half a stop difference. With my D90 I can safely let the ISOs climb. I cannot do that with a K7 unless I know how to run an adequate NR routine in PP. I personally find the depth of field at f1.8 much better than f1.4 for indoor portraits... especially close-ups.

The K7 has other strengths though. It depends whether you need them. The D90 will also fetch you a better resale value.

My humble UN-BIASED two cents without trying to be a fanboy of either of these two lovely brands!

Something looks wrong in the price of your K-7 combo. Do you have the break-down? From what I know it should be around:

K-7 body $1338
FA 50mm f/1.4 $490
Tamron 18-250mm $680

Shouldn't be much more than $2500

As for the K-7 and D90, the D90 is considered a mid-range DSLR while the K-7 is considered a prosumer DSLR that competes against the likes of the D300s and 7D. It has a 100% optical view finder, weather sealing (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Op9mBbo92Ik ) and electronic level that the D90 doesn't have.

And ya, if you choose to get the dual WR kit lens instead of the 18-250, the price is even more attractive, since you can put those WR kit lens under the shower like in the video, but not really the 18-250mm

if all u do is shoot test charts, brick wall, then pic quality is camera dependent since there is no skill involved. However for real world situation, how good a pics looks is more user dependent... A better featured camera will help the user to achieve better pics. For this case, K-7 is a better camera not in terms of IQ but for what it can offer to the user to capture a better picture...

i have not handle a D90 so im not so sure its AF speed. But K-7 is more or less good enough in most situation...

if u shoot events often, go for nikon for its better flash system...

Both D90 and K7 are good cameras, should be sufficient for most users. Spec wises K7 does have its edge: weather sealed body, built-in Shake Reduction, metal body, 100% viewfinder, slightly more pixels, and etc. Most time people would compare K7 w/ D300 instead of D90, but that doesn't mean K7 is a far better camera than the D90.

So which one to go between these two? It was a tough call. But at the current price level of K7, I'd say K7 is a better choice

Definitely. Together with the Pentax K-x, they are both by far the best value for money DSLR you can buy.

You were definitely over-quoted for the Pentax DA 18-250mm. You might want to see if they have the Tamron 18-250mm for Pentax Mount (it's pretty much exactly the same lens as the Pentax 18-250mm). Prices for the other items seem higher than usual though, it looks to me like MS Color is no longer the place to go to for good prices (imagine, they released the K-x at $999 when other shops were selling at $960 or lower).

But ya, I would definitely go with the dual WR lens kit if I were you. You get better image quality having two separate lenses, it's cheaper, and you get WEATHER RESISTANT lenses. Sure, you will lose out on the convenience factor... which is useful if you go holidaying with a tour group. But I don't think it's really that big a deal.

Anyway, one doesn't need the 200mm on most occasion, unless on travel or special outings. I use it for shooting architectural patterns of buildings; as the naked eyes usually can't show the details. Also, discrete shots of people who may not want you to be too close. The DSLR's click sound doesn't help. I am currently using the Fuji Finepix sf100s, which I can silent the sound, as it is a bridge camera. It gives me up to 800mm (400mm x 2x digital). Pretty useful at times; especially shooting birds (the real type, I mean). I caught a kingfisher in Srinagar, Kashmir; and it is very satisfying. Come to think about it; I need to join the Pentax outing. When is the Feb one? BTW, the 2nd lens 50-200mm is not in stock in MS and SLR as well. Only this coming week is stock coming in. BTW, I was told SLR is a parallel importer, not an authorized agent. Is this true? If so, who is providing the warranty? I do note SLR's pricing is very aggressive compared to MS.

Definitely not true, I see a lot of people here have bought from SLR Revo and they all received official Emjay distributed sets.
