Fully Agree.
We have a decent distributor and we now want to pinch pennies (not) to get what?
Not only is it cheaper locally, we support the brand that we like and it thrives in S'pore which in the long run benefits us. Why pull the carpet from our own feet and later lament that the Pentax presence is dying out here. Not to mention that we get a warranty, good price and get to try out the product before purchase.

Online purchase can quickly turn against the buyer who wants to save the few extra dollars. Missing shipments, faulty products, no warranty, unexpected GST, shipping costs, frustrations, can easily set back the savings gained from a few successful purchases.
MHO, use online avenues for stuff we cannot get easily here or if the savings are worth it.
My apology in advance, no intention to get into pricing argument.

I don't think the Pentax prices here is competitive at all, having just came back from my Japan holiday I realized that after the recent prices increased by Emjay the Pentax prices here is far from competitive.

Japanese Yen is at the one of the highest now since the finance crisis at S$1.6 to 100yen versus a year ago at S$1.24 to 100yen. I still own my Canon gears and the price is now atleast 10-20% more expensive in Japan than here and all others small accessories as well. However, the Pentax gear appear to be cheaper in Japan than here, strange huh, I bought a copy of DA 50-200mm WR lens for S$377 after tax rebate (S$395 w/tax). I was quoted here by OP and Alan that the price has gone up and is going for S$5XX, CP S$6XX, for crying out loud Japan is so much cheaper than here, it is rather disturbing (hardly consider pinching pennies).

18-55mm WR is selling about S$350 here, and if you check BH Photo it is going for US$169 i.e. about S$245.

I agreed when Emjay first took over the dealership the prices were very competitive but not anymore after the recently round of price increase by them :(

I fully agreed we should support the local distributor but it has to be equitable.

Yeah, it's kinda sad to see the local prices jumped up quite a bit in the past few months. Why they increased the prices is beyond us, but it's good to see they finally lowered price of K7 by as much as $300 (or more if you can bargain it lower ;)).

If they can't move the sales of those lenses, they'd sure lower the prices again, just like they are doing for K7 ;p

See lah I confuse the nicks... sorry man. Forgive this old guy...

:bsmilie: no apologies needed bro, btw can i ask a few questions?
1) can i reuse the focusing sceen for my k20d in k7?
2) the o-me53 can still be used right?
3) does the bg-4 able to hold an extra piece of sd card and the remote control f?

2) can
3) 1x sd card, cannot hold remote..

1) the K-7 focusing screen is bigger than the K20D screen (tab placement to hold the screen is also different)
2) Yes, no problem using O-ME53 eyepiece magnifier
3) There are two battery options: 1 x lithium ion or 6 x AAs (lithium/Ni-MH/alkaline), requiring separate battery holders (provided).
As the lithium ion battery holder is smaller, there is a slot to keep 1 SD card. If you use the AA battery holder, there is no slot for an SD card.
No place to store the Remote Control F on either battery holder.

pentaxme, one phenomenon that is happening in the Japanese market is deflation.
Prices are actually going down within Japan (according to a few Japanese friends). While it might not mean much for us because the Yen is so strong, that strong yen also means that prices for Pentax gear outside Japan goes up as inventory purchased is pegged versus the Yen. I think we are kinda fortunate to be able to scour globally for the best deals and benefit from price dips elsewhere.

ISO 800 is the most i use and it can be used puurfectly under the void deck. I'm beginning to shoot cats at this wee hours.

Hey Dennis, its ok, we just need a couple more beer sessions to remember me...lol

Certainly! I'm saying 'support the local distributor as long as its reasonable to do so'.
I don't advocate blind support.
If its a good deal elsewhere, after weighing in the support, warranty, other costs, price delta, then pls do buy from the better dealer. We certainly don't want to feed complacency into the local distributor ;).

What I'm saying is that in the context of the K7 (Amazon price USD1095), works out to be a non-logical deal.

Let me know if anyone wants to get a brand new local K7 set for below $1390 (incl. GST). Body only, no trade-in required.

Very tempting but not enough $$$:embrass:

you can't just say, oh look, a big mac costs close to 3 pounds in london, it should cost the same in singapore based on exchange rates!

why don't you take a look here:

http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-pentax-k-7-digital-slr-camera-body/p1032194

929 pounds, with fair exchange rate currently at 1gbp = 2.23 sgd, that's 2071 sgd

so wow, k7 very cheap in singapore!

there are other issues.. sometimes different pricing for different markets. take for example clothes, zara's conversion rate for pounds to euro, in london it is a lot cheaper to buy something from zara, compared to buying it in paris, with pound to euro being 1: 1.1 or so currently.

you seem to be spouting the idea that purchasing power parity (or PPP) in economics holds. that is definitely not true. if that were the case, you won't have seen drivers running to malaysia to pump petrol :bsmilie:

i quote an excerpt from wikipedia for purchasing power parity, on the big mac index..

An example of one measure of PPP is the Big Mac Index popularized by The Economist, which looks at the prices of a Big Mac burger in McDonald's restaurants in different countries. If a Big Mac costs US$4 in the United States and GBP£3 in the United Kingdom, the PPP exchange rate would be £3 for $4. The Big Mac Index is presumably useful because it is based on a well-known good whose final price, easily tracked in many countries, includes input costs from a wide range of sectors in the local economy, such as agricultural commodities (beef, bread, lettuce, cheese), labor (blue and white collar), advertising, rent and real estate costs, transportation, etc. The Big Mac Index is inaccurate in certain cases because of the different market conditions that exist in differing McDonald's locations. For instance, a Big Mac in downtown Chicago is likely to be priced higher than one in Wisconsin. Such pricing differences existing in one country demonstrate the imperfection of the Big Mac Index. In addition, in some emerging economies western fast food represents an expensive niche product price well above the price of traditional staples - i.e. the Big Mac is not a mainstream 'cheap' meal as it is in the west but a luxury import for the middle classes and foreigners. Although it is not perfect, the index still offers significant insight and an easy example to the understanding of PPP.

you can read about the big mac index if you have not heard of it here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Mac_Index

let's think of it in another way. yes, you went to japan for holiday. how much did the air tickets alone cost? :) if i have no business in japan, is it free for me to fly there and back just to bbb lenses?
