Pentax K5 is only $1500 now!!!

Good for some, but no good for the early adopters, especially those fervent Pentax supporters who upgraded. After 4 months, if I were to sell the K5, I will lose approximately 23% of its value, and possibly 60% at the end of one year. Good camera maybe, but lousy company and people running it. If I learn to love K5 (not Pentax) then I will buy the next one at the tail end of its life, otherwise, switch back to other more stable brands.

One good example of my previous experience, bought my 5D (4 yr old) at S$ 2000 and sold it for S$ 1700 after another year and lost 15% but gain 1 year of use.

forget about "learning to love it". just use it and enjoy it. its a tool, its not a spouse.

if you do not enjoy using it, then forget it. i truly sympathise that a simple camera is causing u so much complex emotions.

Early adopters always lose. That's simple economics and how people try to squeeze the maximum from consumers. You want it early? You pay higher. Otherwise, you wait. Those who are willing to pay will pay. Those who are not will wait. Then there will be the group that pays and regrets. To be fair, I was an early adopter of the K20D. I found out that I couldn't stomach the loss, so now I set a "price I'm willing to pay" and wait until the pricing hits that range, if I want the product in the first place.

Just like how hardcover novels are always, always released first. You think the hard cover costs that much more in terms of production compared to the paperback? This is called hurdle pricing. The only difference for electronics is that the product remains the same, but the "just-released" price is almost always going to be high.

The hurdle method of price discrimination is a more approximate method. Basically, it involves creating a hurdle, or small obstacle, which some buyers (those who have a lower reservation price) will be willing to jump over, but others will not. Examples of hurdles: waiting for the price to decline (e.g. if you're willing to wait until a book comes out in paperback, which costs less than hardback, or willing to wait for a sale); mailing in a rebate or collecting a coupon (both of these require a certain amount of time and effort; agreeing to less flexibility in scheduling (this is what you have to put up with if you buy a super-saver air ticket).

Thanks for your words of wisdom. Unfortunate for me I guess, but what I expressed is the truth and I know it hurts most of the time. Look at the 7D's pricing, it's still holding up to today, 60D, maybe down S$ 100 after a year. Never consider this aspect when I switched, so yes, it's my problem. Looks like I have to keep K5 like an unwanted child. Cheers.

i've said my piece. you know best what to do with your equipment. its your money after all.

but i would like to mention here that i think the intent of FW posting this thread is to inform interested members that now is a good time to upgrade because dealers had adjusted their pricing downwards.

we should stick to topic.

+1

Anybody reckon the prices will drop further in the near future?

imo, not much more. based on past trends, pentax releases a new flagship model every 18 mths or so. the next one (K3?), if all goes well, will be released in early 2012.

the previous model is discontinued soon after. hence, very little chances for prices to hit "rock bottom" unless u encounter a shop clearing old stock. and even then, it won't be at "lelong" prices.

First of all you are comparing two different classes of cameras. The 5D class of cameras has a new model out about once every 3 years, the K-5 has a new model out once every 1.5 years. Entry level cameras with a release schedule of 1 year suffer from even more drastic price drops.

Its also not really fair also to compare the price drops on a very old camera as it will usually suffer a slower and more gradual drop in price over time than a brand new model.

I have decided to end my opinion on this subject, so I will appreciate if you guys refrain from answering to my comments as I now consider them out of line. Thanks.

Good news for upgrader like myself! Maybe will see see for a few more mths b4 committing :)

anyone know what is the price k-5 + 18-135mm?

Is the price of K5 still $1500?

A friend just got a quote in Funan(he can't remember which shop, he is not local) and he got back $1630. Rather ridiculous quote I should say.

Don't think the price is gonna increase. So where your friend got the quote, the shop was trying to 宰 him ...

Do you think it will decrease further? :P

[EDIT] In the near future, that is... Of course in 5 years it will decrease, if you can even find it in shops. :P

He was shock that I told him the price should be $1500.

Really awkward moment to predict the price... I can't wait to get the K5, but with recent Ricoh takeover, mere rumours of possible new camera, hard to make the decision !

Actually best to wait for k3, the k5 sure drop price. Ii am waiting for k3....

I think for gizmobuy, it's easier if you call them.
I emailed them for quotes for 2 lenses before and had no response till now.
However, when I called them, they said will get back to me for the availability and did so within the same day.
