Thanks to Feng Wei's review, and the many affirmative purchases from fellow pentaxians in this forum, I have also bought it... collecting it at Singpost later this evening!

Another case of LBA ...

Congrats on the purchase. I'm sure it'd serve well for a walkaround and travel lens :)

I like the lens, but the grindingly noisy AF turned me off. Tried it out at MSColor but didn't really like it.

It must be because you have been using your noiseless SDM lens.:bsmilie:

looks like very decent performance for a superzoom

just wondering about distortion/vignetting issues - the 18-55 kit definitely has problems with that at 18 anyways

 Uh oh. Is this the start of being picky?

I just collected the lens...

Initial comments
- Image quality appears pretty sharp (non-scientific approach hor)
- and yes, I agree with VulpixOr, it's much much noisier than DA*s.. ;) and compared with the DA lens (18-55 or 50-200), it's also a bit louder. You won't want to take photos in front of bunch of tourists in a quiet tourist spot while the guide is narrating their stories.. :nono:
- The zoom between 200mm - 250mm is but only a very short twist, and not much magnification.. given my limited understanding of zoom lens built, I cannot comment more.
- Quality of the lens hood as compared to the DA 18-55 and 50-200 is poorer in comparison.

Some negative comments above, but hack, for the convenience.. it's really worth it (until something NEW and GOOD comes along).

Another point - It's too expensive to purchase this lens in Singapore's stores, period!

oooh....congrats ! if you bought it much cheaper than $900, I may need to knock my head against the wall! :sticktong Luckily I am quite happy with the lens. In fact, I do not find the focussing noisy at all. Hardly noticed it.
My only grip is the lens assembly is so heavy when you point downwards, the lens extends to maximum range. I frequently have to lock and unlock it which makes me worry the switch may break sooner or later.

That 'worries' me too.. But I thought I need to start utilizing all my lens and make them worthwhile rather than worry too much it getting its usual wear and tear.

About the price, I'll pass you some free plasters for your forehead :bsmilie:

hi, any idea what is the price now for pentax and tamron version?

As an early adopter, I got the Pentax overseas expensive at $950. I think hjbyeo bought it cheaper because he got it later. The Tamron should be around $800 if I remember correctly...

I was quoted $720 (inc gst i think) for the Tamron by MS Color at AMK Hub.
The Pentax DA version is very ex here... in US... it is same or could even be cheaper than the Tamron.

yes but after shipping and GST cost, they really wipe out most of the savings. Pretty amazing considering we are nearer to Japan than the US!

Thanks Feng Wei for the wonderful comparsion.

I think this DA18-250 suit many of us, who prefer to use one len without having to swop lenses while hiking, and perhaps able to zoom in on a mountain goat from afar.

I am just wondering if this len support SR function?

A DA40/f2.8 would complement DA18-250 nicely.

:D

I have just checked B&H.
The Pentax costs USD469.95 and the Tamron is USD479.95.
Shipping is around USD60

Hence the Pentax is roughly S$742 inclusive of shipping, but assuming the package is not spot checked and thus attracts no GST.

Going through VPOST (cos' it's B&H and only accepts US Address..or at least that's what I think) would attract GST.

If you go by vPost, you'll sure be charged by GST :) That'd make the total for over $800SGD. Still a better buy than local ones except the risk of no-warranty ...

Ya go thru vpost sure got GST charges 1...
No escape...

I have decided to go 4 DA55-300mm instead of DA18-250mm...

Hey! I thought the DA 55-300 isn't really out yet. I think it's launch by 1st April. Wouldn't it be good to know how this lens measure up first before the decision? ;)

DA 18-250mm is really good based on my experiences with it. Sharp lens and a wonderful range albeit a little slower at 250mm...
