perdóneme, si mi nombre le engaña
i always thought you were an afghan :dunno:and i suppose everyone thinks i'm spanish?
I really do not care what other people think, if I believe it is the right thing, I will do it. As all of you know, I can be as blunt as anyone here.
Racism and bigotry cannot be tolerated, especially in public. Weileong and others will claim political correctness running amok, but I disagree. We cannot allow the ugly heads of racism and bigotry to have a foot hold anywhere in our society. We cannot simply wipe off racist remarks by claiming that the person is merely naive, ill informed, incensitive or even prejudice. But a racist remark is a racist remark. Some are worse, but they are still racist.
For this instance, when seeing a french name, Antoniette, and on seeing an African woman, proclaimed surprise because Antoniette is a French name and French is supposed to be white, in my book that is racism.
How bad is this transgression? Personally, I don't feel it is to the point of a capital crime, but still it's racism and bigotry. Maybe, the person in question is naive, ill informed or even incensitive. I will give him the benefit of the doubt, but a more serious question arises, why are everyone like Weileong rushing to defend him?

guys, chill out.
not everyone is so well-informed.
I think many people would be surprised also when they step into paris and find out that there are so many non-whites in Paris (from their old colonies...)
the same way that people come to Singapore and are surprised that we speak pretty good english.
Inform, don't crucify.

As an aside, our MM has been quoted more than once saying that "Chinese are congenital gamblers". Would DP or Garou12 like to write to him and say that he is racist?
weileong, what do you not understand.
Someone, seeing a french name, Antoniette, automatically assumed the person is French, automatically assumed that the person is white, and proclaimed surprises when seeing this person to be African.
Well, to me that is racism.
As I said it earlier, I will be this person some benefit of the doubt, but still said his comments are racist. What I really have a serious problem with is the people defending racism.
I think we are quite done. Like i mentioned before, lets move on.
Thank you.
Hombre! No eres de Colombia? :bsmilie:
Waileong/DP,
I think it is quite sufficient. I will not be closing this thread but i honestly think such back and forth dialogue will serve no purpose. Its obvious both parties have their own viewpoint and if neither party is willing to concede or budge, I really do not see this going anywhere.
I am once again asking both of you to let this go.
Thank you.
WG
i always thought you were an afghan :dunno:
I am not trying to convince DP. He is beyond that. Who cares about DP? He's not my favourite CS-er.
The purpose is to expose the fallacies in logic shown here by certain people, so that others on the sidelines are clear about what constitutes racism and bigotry.
