OMG! Look at the EM-1 aka the now official E-M1 Thread

is it ugly?

thanks for the sharing.

the guys at mu-43 are really good at analyzing stuff from their replies:

'based on the picture it failed from a bending moment, and not in shear. The fracture surface does not appear to have any area reduction or necking so was probably not a ductile failure. It does appear to initiate at the end of the threaded section where the self-tapping screw terminates and the maximum stress would be applied to the post molding in its' thinnest wall section.'

hmm, i'm still not particularly worried but as I'll be dropping Oly Svc Ctr later i'll let them know about this.

at the very least so far from what I read Oly is going to replace/repair at no cost for the user. What perplexes me is that this guy claims there were no drops and he was just carrying the lens mounted in his bag. I haven't seen any lens falling apart from being carried - even the budget $25 CCTV lenses so I'm definitely interested to find out more about this.

I've generally been using the 12-40 mounted on the EP5 and carrying it in my bag when not shooting (of course) and so far so good.

The only time I ever had a lens break in my bag was a terrible old Sigma walkaround lens many years ago. Cheap crap so wasn't heartbroken when it broke due to lousy plastic mount.

1st shot with the EM-1 with 17/1.8. I'm happy ;)

Thanks everyone for your comments! I shall work towards saving up for the EM1 next year, hopefully when construction of the 12-40mm lens has been improved too.

How you want it to be improved? :dunno:

I was referring to the cases of the lens breaking on its own. I know it's probably a rare lemon case, but was hoping maybe Olympus would look into it?

Despite having bought the em1 and still holding on to em5, I still find use for my em5.. somehow the videos from the em5 isn't as 'robotic' as the em1 when moving.. might be just me or due to the new ibis.. of course panny is a better choice for videos still I'd agree..

Other than that my girlfriend uses the em5 while I use the em1 when we're traveling.. so far I've yet to commit to getting a wide prime as I've a Ricoh GRDIV with me at all times..

Em5 still see some time out of my cabinet on my lazy days that I wish to travel light.. and also when I need 2 bodies for some shoots.. essentially my backup should I put the em1 under my own scheduled cleaning..

But then for those looking at a total replacement or only can have 1 body at any 1 point in time (minister of home finance at work) the em1 would be no doubt the one to get over em5.. if not when the day comes that u hold a em1, you'd be bashing yourself.. haha
