Old/alternate lenses, adapters, and lens mount conversions.

thanks for the info! :D

i read that not all MC lens are able to convert to EOS mount... for example the 50mm f1.7

I don't exactly know which will or will not clear the mirror. When I am still doing my research on Minolta, my understanding then is that most lenses below 50mm will not clear the mirror of FF, no problem for APS-C. Even the revered 58/1.2 does not clear at infinity. However, the tele primes should be quite safe.

Amazingly, after waiting for almost 1 year and within 1 day of posting the status of the Minolta MC 50/1.4 I have ordered back then. The lens arrived on my desk today. A nice chunk of glass. :)

Congrats!!!!

to my knowledge, the newest designs (58mms) do not clear the mirror. but the newer 50mms do. it also depends on the aperture. the 35 2.8 clears the nikonf FX mirror. the 85 1.7 should be able to clear too.

I just chanced upon this thread and I am heartened to see the interest in old manual lenses. I have just converted a Minolta MC Rokkor 58mm-PF F1.4 to Sony A-mount. It had been a joy to use, sharp and nice colours. I made a short review of this lens at the Sony Forum which I am providing the link here: MC Rokkor 58mm F1.4. Coincidentally, I have a MC Rokkor 200mm QF F3.5 and a MC Rokkor 135mm F2.8, which are the same lenses Ben had. I have yet to convert them but judging from the images and review made by Ben, I am hopeful of their results!

The actual lens:

Some images shot by the MC Rokkor 58mm F1.4. First picture is shot wide open. The rest are between F2.0 - F4. Pardon the composition though!

Indeed, minolta lenses are fantastic. sadly i have problems converting anything less than 100mm cos of the f mount. the 200 is really quite special. just in case yr interested, the 300 f4.5 isnt very good at all. low contrast and heavy as a brick(no, really) i'd imagine tt with the SLT system you ll be able to convert the 58 1.2.. usually cant cos of the mirror when it flaps up

the 58mm fl is actually v v nice. i enjoy it very much. use the Nikkor 5.8cm f/1.4. enjoy the lens and do let us know how the other 2 lenses go!

Thanks for the advice Ben! Haha...glad I didn't buy that 300mm F4.5 the last time. How does the 200mm QF fare with portraits? I would love to see more images you took with this lens. Strangely though...my MC 200mm QF has the aperture ring in front and the focusing ring behind...but yours is different. Maybe different versions? Hmm....

O.. to my understanding, the progression of MC lenses goes like this:
black aperture ring infront of focus ring
silver aperture ring infront of focus ring
silver aperture ring behind focus ring - now with built in hood
rokkor-X with metal grip
Rokkor -X with rubber grip.

does yr 200 have a built in hood? the one with the silver ring is the version im looking out for now. haha. i think the aperture ring makes it look more interesting. mine has the slide out hood with aperture ring at the back of the lens, and have both versions of the 135mm 2.8.

the 200 is a v good lens. very crisp/contrasty with v nice blur. haven't shot portraits with it tho, 200 abit long on cropped sensor..

here's one more from it.. f/5.6 i think.. closest focusing distance.

maybe i ll bring it out to shoot today.. can't decide between that and the 100-300 f4

Wow....very nice! I can even see the tiny hairs on the leaves!

Yah, mine has the silver aperture ring but it came with slide out hood!

Cheers!

o, just found the one 'portrait' shot i took with the 200 f/3.5

wide open, Fuji Pro160S film.

and this one is the 135 f/2.8, also wide open, same film

Thanks Ben! The bokeh looks pretty good!

received my Minolta MC Rokkor 50mm f1.4 but some hiccups... keh.com sent me a copy that had some fungus :( ... so need to get fatigue to help me clean the fungus before I pass to Ben to do the EOS conversion for me.

excitement got over me... so I flipped my 5DMKII mirror (to prevent mirror clearance) and handheld the lens close to the cam (of cos did some focusing prior to shooting) and did one test shot.

Quite like the bokeh and colors.

So did KEH refund any money to you for the fungus?

nope, they offer me a new replacement at no extra cost. also told me to discard this lens but i find it a pity so paid bro fatigue to help me clean the lens.

Hello everyone, great to see this thread coz lately I have caught the bug for alternative lenses!

Here is my contribution : Kaleinar-5N 100mm F/2.8 Nikon Mount

Ultron501833-XL.jpg

I discovered this manual focus lens by chance and bought it when I was in Hong Kong for a very reasonable HKD700 (SGD110 approx). From what I can find out, this is made in the former Soviet Union for the Kiev 17 and 19 SLR cameras which takes Nikon F mount. When I mounted it on my D7000 DSLR it can detect the aperture settings, the metering works and so does the AF confirm. Great!

The lens is surprisingly compact for the focal length, just slightly smaller and lighter than my 18-70 Nikkor AF zoom, and of course slimmer since it takes 52mm filters.

Having read about the variable quality of Soviet lenses, my expectation was not high but so far I have been pleasantly surprised by the image output from this lens.

Overall impression, a value for money lens!

Finally converted my Minolta MC 135mm F2.8 today. What a sharp lens it is! Didn't really played with it a lot yet, but had a moon shot with it just now. Below is a 100% crop with some PP and sharpening. At only 135mm F4.5, it is already showing more details than my 75-300 zoom could deliver at 300mm F8.

may i suggest the nikkor 5.8cm f/1.4. its a very very early lens with a really unique character. should do videos beautifully..

Hi Ben,

I've seen samples of what the 5.8cm f/1.4 can produce and I'm hooked. I've googled and read that there may be difficulties mounting and/or metering on newer Nikon DSLRs. Do you know if the lens will mount on a D90 and also, will it meter on the 'semi-pro' bodies like the D300 and D7000 upward?

Thanks.

Hey, got back to you on the other thread. but for the benefit of the others, the conversion is simple and totally reversible. will give full metering capabilities on the Dx00 and Dx range of cameras.

Anw, another lens to intro: Carl Zeiss T* 45mm f/2.8 Pancake for Contax/Yashica System.
my apologies for it taking so long, i ve actually had the lens for close to a month now, bu been busy so couldnt update here. it started with me wanting a smaller alternative tho my 50 1.2. the 50 1.8 nikkor was good, but was still a lil big. turned to the nikkor 45 2.8P but its like $700-800 so finally came to this lens instead.

mounted on my nikomat FTN:
261879_10150246094143193_601983192_7539507_5938266_n.jpg

and just a size comparison next to the nikkor 50 1.8 and 1.2

when mounted on my d700, the lens barely protrudes past the grip of the camera, its really small, kind of like shooting without a lens on. the focus throw is long. about 180º from ∞ to CFD which is about 2ce as much as the nikkors. this threw me off at first, but im starting to get used to it. the focus ring and aperture rings are small and close together so it also takes some getting used to. the focus is smooth and precise, a pleasure to use.

here're some sample pictures so far:

183895_10150260433448193_601983192_7686226_1976937_n.jpg

while not biting sharp, the contrast is there and there's a very different feel from the nikkors. its contrasty, but not overly so, colours seem very rounded. it does skin tones pretty well and the lens hardly ever flares, and i ve had no problems with LOCAs either. all in all a very pleasant lens to use. it my 'kit lens' which sits on the camera when its in my bag now.

im currently processing some more pictures and will put them up when they re ready =)

Anybody know where I can get a custom, or reused tripod collar for my Nikon AF 180 f2.8, and/or also my Canon FD 200 f2.8...I like to use both of them on M4/3, and Sony NEX rigs, but I would like to use a tripod, using the camera body mt to tripod is an obvious No No (lense is way to hevy for Camera to tripod mount alone) And I do not want silly cradle brackets....I want a bracket that looks like it was made for the lens.....The second option would be a Nikon/M4/3 adapter with a good size collar mounted on it to be used with the 180,,, Same goes for an FD/M4/3 adapter... Has any one cobled together eiither of these rigs before???:)

Thanks

Hi Ben,

Nice to see you contributing the latest pictures. Btw, are you shooting film and then scanning them into digital? The last few pictures looked very nice and clean, almost like digital. Care to share how you digitise the pictures?

Thanks in advance!
