Old/alternate lenses, adapters, and lens mount conversions.

The OM 90f2 macro is better.

i wan...

I paid quite a good price as I bought all at one go. All of them are the latest MC versions and my OM 50f1.4 s/no is greater than 1.1 million. The 35f2 has a very late s/no and was told that it was the last batch manufactured. The 100f2,8 is so good that I gave up on the 105f2.5 AIS.

is it? i ve been looking for a 100 2.8 and don't really want to go with the nikkor 2.5 cos the build quality isnt solid enuf.. maybe also cos i dun like to bee too main stream. ;) considering btwn konica, minolta, fujica and OM 100mms...

I am sure you already know. The OM 80/4 requires either a bellow or the auto-extension tube. And there are 2 versions of the same lens.

I have had the AIS 20/2.8 for a short while and did not quite like it. The colours are flat and lack contrast. The lens flares and ghost easily. I have seen others mentioned the 20/3.5 is better. I have settled for OM 21/3.5. IMO, it is very usable.

ah.. so thats why it looked so compact.. maybe not the 80 then.. thanks for the info. maybe i ll go for the 3.5 instead..

its a pity wide angle lenses are so much more difficult to convert...

If you switch to Canon, buying adapters will solve the conversion woes. But I think you enjoy DIY. Actually Leitax provides a lot of mount conversion kits but they are more expensive.

I am more or less settled on OM lenses for their portablilty. I will just keep a couple of AF zooms for convenience.

BTW, I am looking to offload some of my OM lenses that overlaps with my zoom lenses. So if anyone is looking for some Ooomphs, let me know.

got 85 or 100? those are the last(yea right..) primes im looking for.. i've actually always wondered how oly could make their lenses so small compared to other manufacturers.. do they have more vignetting/corner softness or just as good?

i quite like converting actually.. costs me only about $7 per conversion for the m42 adapter. speaking of leitax.. would really love to ave a R 90 f2.8 to play with =P

I started collecting & using legacy lenses, when I came to Moscow to stay.
There were a lot of hits and misses when buying old lenses @ flea market and old photography stores. Here are some of the lenses in my collection.

Helios 44m-6 58mm @ f/2

Industar 61 L/Z 50mm f2.8 Macro

Pentacon 200m f4. This is a really sharp copy. In the RAW picture, I can see the reflect of green stems on the water droplet at the edge of the petals.

Industar 61 L/Z 50mm f2.8 Macro

wow you have all what i am finding, Helios 40-2, Industar 61. Do you hear about the MC Volna 9 Macro 1:2 ?

The Helios 44m-6 58/2 is not rare, i have 44, 44-2, 44-3, 44-4, 44-6. The odd 44-7 and 44-5 are more rare than others

 are you collecting helios 44?

soviet lens club :bsmilie:

I want something longer than 300mm native (without TC). Olympus OM has a 350/2.8 but that is too expensive.

I want to try thin DoF and very blur OoF for tele subjects. But lens must be cheap also. Seems like no cheap and good tele :)

You can try looking at the MF Nikkors. But the Nikkor 400mm f3.5 will not be cheap, and probably cost 1.5k SGD. The Canon FD 400mm f4.5 can be a great budget, Ebay seems like u can get one off for 399 USD or maybe slightly cheaper but mount will be a slight problem

Are you going to be permanent in Moscow. I intend to visit Moscow next year. Will you still be there?

How are the character of Soviet lenses compared to the Japs/German?

+1, i ve always wondered too. esp the 58 f2 and 85..

I also got a R 90/2.8 to sell. I have too many lenses in this FL and need to streamline. Nope, I don't hv O 85 and 100 but hv an O 135/2.8. I think I will set up a BnS with the lenses I am looking to SSS :)

My first experience with OM lenses did not went well. Anthony told me to look for the later versions and they are just as good. Check out the OM thread.

I found another...converted Contax N 400/4 with AF...but the price tag....too bad this year bonus no good :(

here is a Mamiya 500mm f5.6 but will be able to retrofit

Samyang has a reflex lens that is 500/6.3 and OM 400/5.6 that are much more portable. Seems like need to compromise somewhere, maybe settle for a shorter FL and half stop slower - OM 300/4.5.

Yes I do have the Volna 9 in my collection. Not my fav. It is expensive and I think a little over-rated. I still prefer the Industar 61.

Helios 44m-6 was the first m42 lens I bought. I like the swirly bokeh it produces that gives a spinning effect.

2011 is the last year I will be in Moscow.

Soviet lenses are like wine. Some batch/year makes wonderful lenses. Others are just plain horrible. The earlier soviet lenses are good. Lenses made in the later part of the soviet era are not that great. But you will still find some nice gem.

Have not get any Japs M42 lenses yet, so cannot compare. Saw a smc takumar 28mm recently, but still deciding?

German as in the GDR lenses, I collect CZ and Pentacon. I feel that they are better than soviets', but lacks the odd character I like in old lenses.

I am thinking of moving towards the MF format Lenses to do Tilt shift (with an adapter) on my 7D. Any bro out there have any experience in this? I am trying to get the adapter.

Ryan, aka Giantcanopy is into MF lenses with T/S. Checkout his website in his signatory.

Need some education for these Zenit. What does the trailing numbers mean , eg 44-1,2,3 etc? And the some have the M behind, eg 44M-2. Are these all Carl Zeiss Biotar?

I do have both lenses u mentioned. They are nice to use. But I will be more than happy to let u try the Industar when I am back in Singapore. (dunno when yet :dunno:)

The volna 9 is a bit cranky, I am actually looking for another cheap one to cannibalize for parts...:bsmilie:

I'm actually interested in getting a MF lens with adapter for T/S using my 5D...just wondering where are you guys getting the lens and adapter from? I'm looking at 24 to 35mm (35mm FOV eqv) focal length lens... :)

There are some information on page 3 of this thread. I think the Mirex adapters are what you are looking for.
