[ OFFICIAL RELEASE 2010.09.14 ] - Olympus E-5

oh these are so much better than the official samples - nice and smooth gradations from light to dark - assuming no pp done here.

colourwise, it's not exactly E-1 - perhaps closer than the E-3...

still, i'd want to see the full sized images.

oh and that shot by judy herrmann - my guess is that she used a 14-35.

Im more impressed to the video cam they are using for the dessert/sand strong lols.

Kidding aside E3 could also do that and I think Pentax K7 also :)

That's the problem.

And the K7 is cheaper.

Will we have another hands on session for this?
Don't mind go take a look.

Seems like the E-5 does not have many 'wow' factors technically, but I think we can bank on the image quality. Perhaps that's the main attraction Olympus is banking on... to reach the full potential of the Zuiko Digital lenses to capture excellent images. :D

Can't wait for more reviews and image samples.

I'm using a E-410 and have wanted to upgrade to an E-3 after raves from all you seniors out there. With the release of E-5, I think I know where most of my year end bonus is heading to. Hehe...:bsmilie:

Wonder what kinda bundle will Oly throw during the SITEX 2010. :dunno:

Image quality might be the main thing, but not many people might get it due to lack of features which is something people seem to be aiming at though

Look on the bright side bro. At least Oly has released something. Fujifilm has not release a DSLR for very long liao...

And from the samples i see floating around the web, i think there's no more early highlight clipping & at the same time maintains the shadow details. ;)

Not enough to compel me to buy it though. Let's see when October comes when the production model is out and see if they did throw in something interesting into the package. But I think the deal is sealed for the Pentax though. I have most of the lenses in the ZD series that I need, and only need to "update" the camera bodies whenever something is released. But honestly, I don't think I need the E-5 for now. What it can do, I can already achieve that with my E-3 + post processing skills. Pen, on the other hand, does inspire me to shoot more and that is a good thing. With the MMF adapter, it is a joy to use and I feel a better for money product than the E-5. Now waiting for the next Pen body to come out instead.

With the Pentax, the 40MP sensor makes a great jump for image quality, and it is Kodak CCD afterall. And a lot cheaper than the Mamiya offering. Just have to wait for the lenses to be complete. Thankfully the missus has approved of the budget. ;)

:o Talk about jumping straight for the King!

Nothing to scream about actually... it is the cheapest 645 camera I can find today. the freelance work I have is not enough to justify buying a camera costing more since I will find it hard to recoup the money upfront. But thankfully being where I am, freelance work is flowing in aplenty.

And being a good Olympus fan, I took the advise from Olympus... if I need more pixels, I should go full frame, and in this case, a 645. 35mm full frame is not enough a jump for me. And after handling the Pentax 645D in Japan, I am hooked. But the selling price is still high and the lenses are not complete. I don't believe their older 645 lenses have enough resolution for the killer sensor, so I am waiting for them to be released first. Most likely I will get it in Spring 2011 if all goes well.

The most important reason is, which is funny, the Pentax feels like a huge Olympus E-1. It is comfortable to hold and everything feels right for a 645 camera. For advanced amateurs, this is the camera to save for.

Granted. It's a few more thousand than a Leica M9, but heck, the leap in image quality is fantastic, judging from the pictures I have seen so far.

And hell.. it's a tonne cheaper than the Leica S2, which supposedly uses a similar sensor.

I'm not that heavily invested in Olympus yet but i will love to one day... I think i might be a potential e-5 user, as i dont already have an e-3 and i am the type who will use a camera till the day it dies....

But i am just uncomfortable in making that investment not knowing that Olympus will give me the same type of support that Canikon does its customers. Its sad really, because i really want to pair the e-5 with the 14-35 as it means worlds to me to have that famous 'prime-like' quality in a zoom, and at the same time not bringing your whole collection of primes just to cover a freaking event. My canon is only good if using the primes and many of their zooms are nothing so much to shout at. I wanna have just one lens with top drawer image for its purpose and thats it. Looks like you can never have the best of both worlds in photography, but again am i asking for too much? I just need the kind of reassurance that the 43 line-up will grow and Oly shows a serious level of commitment to it. Give me that, and a good price for the e-5, and i will make that investment on them in future.

There is just too much expectations from us on Olympus. Perhaps, that's why Olympus doesn't own the big market share. Simply because they stick to the true traditions and aim of photography - quality images, rather than offering what the majority consumers want. So kudos to them for sticking true to their philosophy, though at a price. :)

I suppose Olympus is prepared for it. They have already mentioned, if more megapixels is what the customer wants, they can get it from the full frame cameras. And quite possibly, they could have reached the full potential of 4/3 with the E-5. Their next step should be mirrorless cameras.

Well, at least I don't think I will lose out if I get the E-5 since I have neither the E-3 nor the Pen. ;p

Forgive me in advance because of my foul mood...

But you are so absolutely wrong!

Let me tell you why....

(Deep breath and yell towards Japan)

When you, Olympus, created the E-10, E-20 and then the E-1... you nailed ergonomics so well that it was an unbelievable product. Unmatched by anything else on the market. Then came E-3, you screwed it up by trying to be "conventional". Now that you have PENs that sells well, why the hell have you taken the lazy way out and used the same crap E-3 form factor when you could have chosen the E-1? Or better still, redesign the E-5 casing. That is what that is pissing me off.

Olympus... you suck! You lazy piece of crap. You want to be the Leica of the East, then think ergonomics first! (Take a look at Leica's S2 form factor!) You want to look normal then go all the way, create 25MP cameras then and compete with Sony, Pentax and maybe Nikon... why be neither here nor there? If you don't want to follow, then go back to the bold and lovely ergonomic form factor that made the old guys fell in love with the E-System in the first place? Or maybe you are tired of selling heavy lenses now are you?

Whatever it is, the old faithfuls are slowly starting to pack their luggage, and you are not interested in us anyway... you are more interested in pretty schoolgirls with short skirts and pink hair bands buying your Pens... us old faithfuls are just losers who were your guinea pigs and help you establish your E-System that led to the Pens.

You bloody ingrate! All I ask for after buying all those Zuiko glass is a lousy ergonomically stunning camera body and you let me down. Utterly disappointing! Not as if you have never done it before... even if you were to copy the E-1 that would have been a call for celebration! Instead you took the worse form factor ever designed by Olympus and continued the flagship line... ARE YOU FRIGGING MAD!!?!!?!!

(end of rant...)

(reaching for my CD player, playing a song from Guns N Roses... that goes like this...
"I used to love her, but I have to kill her..."
I guess they also bought some Olympus gear in the past, maybe a OM camera?)

Woah! I hear you. Perhaps I would probably rant like you do if I were in your shoes. I don't think I take any offence from your rant, thus, there's no need to ask for forgiveness. At least, I think you do have the right to your opinions, which sounds pretty fair.

Hopefully, they hear you. But I guess by the time they do, or they already did but failed to do something about it, the old time faithfuls have left. Too little, too late.

Makes me wonder if the Oly camp is dividing here... :( Hopefully not...

By the way, the way you described about that Guns n Roses song you dedicated is kinda ... should I say... entertaining? Cos it suits in two sense of the word... 1) True to the lyrics and 2) you are humourous.

Yeah... :bsmilie: ... took the opportunity to rant.

I am passionate still about Zuiko glass, but the camera bodies... Olympus is like two different companies in one... Tatsuno is loved for the Zuiko glass, the camera body design division is run by monkeys. How can anything be more entertaining than that? Maybe the old guys should retire... some decision makers are turning senile... maybe.

Olympus new tagline.
Great glass, crap body.
Like a supermodel with wrong make up.
That is why we are different.

And yes, since the Pens came along, there are two different kinds of fans...

One group love the Pen and used every other lens except M.ZD.

The other are suckers like me who love the Zuiko Digital glass but have no good camera body to go with it. Holding on to old camera bodies or buy a MMF adapter and try to cheer ourselves up.

This is something I never understood. It's almost like schizeophrenia. I mean, hey, the mass market prefers small lenses, but beyond them? :dunno:

Haha... Indeed. The Zuiko Digital lens are most probably what's keeping me at Olympus. I would love to have the Pen, but my pocket ain't deep enough. It's either the Pen, the E-3 or the E-5. The lens are the mouthwatering attraction and since I don't have the m4/3, I might as well stick to my 4/3 collection.

Sure hope something can cheer you up Mic. I have plenty to learn from you if the chance arise.
