took an event at night yesterday..
set up was 6D+24-105 + 580EXII

Many times, when i half press and full press, the thing doesn't focus and shoot. sometimes it does, but after a lag time.
the lag can be as long as 1-2 seconds..

im not too sure if it refuses to focus and shoot because my flash softbox was partially blocking my AF assit (but it wasnt totally pitch dark!),
or im not used to the 6D button (it doesnt have a distinct shutter half press as compared to my 400D).

anyone has any idea?

Mine no lag. Does it happen all the time consistently with different setup?

there was a product advisory for the 1DX and 5D3 on AF aquisition speed when using AF assist lamp, maybe it should apply to the 6D too.

I haven't used my flashguns on my 6D yet... maybe I should give it a try too.

Depending upon the shooting conditions, it may take slightly longer for the EOS 5D Mark III and EOS-1D X digital SLR cameras to acquire focus when using the Speedlite's AF Assist Beam, compared with that of the EOS 5D Mark II and EOS-1D Mark IV digital SLR cameras using the Speedlite's AF Assist Beam.

We are developing a solution to enhance the focusing feature for the EOS 5D Mark III and EOS-1D X and plan to release a firmware update based on following estimated schedule:

EOS 5D Mark III: (estimated) Late April, 2013
EOS-1D X: (estimated) Late May, 2013

I experienced this problem while doings studio shoot! It was absolutely annoying and disappointing. My clients were freely expressing themselves and just when I thought I could snap their "natural moments", the camera wouldn't focus and snap. Even when I've focused on the same spot in e previous shot. )):

Solutions anyone? Sigh...

Are you letting the camera auto select its AF point or are you using the green box full auto mode?

try switching off the AF assist lamp and see if the AF delays are still there?

how to switch off AF assist? go into flash custom menu?
or just off the flash. haha.

this surely is annoying. hope canon faster find out faster release firmware update.

This is strange. I have done a few studio sessions and no problem so far. Need to know more on how u shoot so that we can help.

This is strange. I have done a few studio sessions and no problem so far. Need to know more on how u shoot so that we can help.

Hello! Thanks for trying to resolve this issue for me. Basically I selected my own AF point, but when I shoot someone, although his/hands may changed position, but my focus point remained on his face. However, the camera doesn't seem to be able to catch it on the 2nd shot. It's as though I aim at a completely white background which the camera doesn't detect any subject.

Hope I've explained it clearly enough?

Hey hey hey! People are just trying to be helpful here. Perhaps you did not let the camera select the AF point nor was it on auto mode but quite honesty nobody would know right? So everyone is taking the time and trouble to help you diagnose the problem.

If you feel this is taking a swipe then you can choose to 1)take it in your stride, answer nicely as others have done or 2)choose not to ask questions here because any suggestion seems to be a swipe at your skills.

Unless the person offering the help was there, they won't know and all they are doing are offering up suggestions!

Noted. I'm saying it in an absolutely friendly manner. No offense at all! Just like how the user mtunlin asked. Appreciate it! I had 2 users to the camera that night, because I actually went to ask the owner of the studio if he experienced it himself, and he couldn't figure out why too.

However, perhaps it's just continuous shooting or maybe memory card not powerful enough to have continuos shots? Just guessing the possible problems!

Definitely appreciate all e feedback on this forum, been really useful.

Like what G-man has said, readers (myself included) don't know what settings you have adopted, so it's just a simple question, no snide meanings intended. all are here to learn and share info.

That said, there's no such thing that automatic greenbox mode equates to newbie with lesser skills and creative modes translates to pro skills.

what's important the end image appear well-composed and tack-sharp, with optional PP that adds icing to the cake.

so back to your problem, if you really find problems with laggy AF, best is to bring the body+lens back to CSC for a check to see if anything wrong.

If AF set to AI Servo, set C.Fn II-3 to Release-priority for 1st image instead of Focus-priority.

ok. not too sure what your settings were to have the AF lag when AF assist is on.

I used my 6D with a 430 EXII and AF Assist worked perfectly. even in pitch dark conditions.

how to switch off AF assist? go into flash custom menu?
or just off the flash. haha.

i tried to do AF tests again in my room... and focusing outside (at night)...
it's all working well now >.<

With regard to Wifi remote shooting, the live view LCD on the camera is On. Is there a way to switch the LCD off, and at the same time use wifi EOS remote on the phone to control/take a photo?

Go under the settings within the EOS remote app. There should be an option to not have the LCD on.
