Official Canon EOS 60D User Thread Part I

Richard, you should have gone to Funan instead since it is just nearby, there are more choices over the and you can compare the prices too. Seldom do we hear people buying from people's park. I think the shops there mostly sell grey set and to tourists.

As for the Tamron lens, I will not spend that kind of $ to buy it. If I were to spend above $1ooo on a lens, I will expect the IQ to be reasonably good. That Tammy 18-250 certainly don't fall into that category.

Since you are posting in this thread, I assume that you already have a 60D. Why didn't you buy the kit set with 18-200. It will cost you less and the IQ is definitely better than the Tammy 18-250 IMO.

Thanks. Went there to change currency for holiday travel.
So might as well look around.
They sell grey sets there? How to tell the diff between grey and non-grey official sets?
No wonder they quoted lower.
Havent got the camera yet, hoping to get one for travelling next week :)

Thanks.

richardg: good thing you resisted and did not buy. According to Clubsnap price guide these are the prices for the 18-250:

AF18-250mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II LD Aspherical (IF) [$710 MS] [$700 J316]

The Tamron 18-250 may be sharper than the 18-200 (according to Photozone), but it does not have VC (vibration control) which is very important at the tele end (unless you intend to use it on a tripod)

A better lens (in my opinion) is the Tamron 18-270. This lens has VC (rated highly). According to the Clubsnap price guides, this is what you should be paying:

AF18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical (IF) [$920 OP, Mar10] [$960 AP, Mar10] [$940 MS, Mar10] [$930 MS, Jul10] [$899 CP, Jul10]

It is best to shop at Funan but stay away from Bally Photo (scam shop). Good luck.

Thanks! Main thing there was to try out the camera :)
No wonder he kept pushing the Tamron.

Prefer Ms-color, they once accepted complete return of a PnS bought wrongly. :)

New 60D owner reporting here! Bought this camera after weeks of pondering between the 60D and 7D. Ended up with the 60D as I felt that I am just an enthusiast, no point spending so much on the body. I intend to use the savings to get myself a good prime ;)

My upgrade is from the 550D. After trying it at home yesterday, I will say that this is a really good upgrade from the 550D. More solid feel and better grip for my big hand, focuses very fast in low light at ISO 100 with my 17-55. I like the functions on the top LCD screen. In the past always have to switch on the display of my 550D when I need to change the setting (I shoot with the LCD display totally off). Off course the swivel screen is sweet to have too, though I believe I won't be using it much for videos.

Overall I am very pleased with the 60D so far, but there is still a lot of things to learn about this camera as there are alot more functions compared to my 550D. It is certainly a great upgrade from the xxxD series.

Btw, love the shutter sound :)

Kingston, class 6. Don't have other SD cards to compare with, guess i have to live with it.
Thanks for the input.

SDHC is just an abbreviation for Secure Digital High Capacity, so can't tell what class speed from it.

You might have to look at the label or packaging to search for it, and not all manufactures rate their cards so you might not be able to find it also.

As far as I am aware, there have been 2 makes of free SDHC cards given by Canon for 60D purchase- the Lexar Platinium II, and the Scandisk (not sure which model). Both are supposedly rated at class 4, but feedbacks from forums here seem to indicate that all those who got the Lexar one have no issues with full HD recording while those who got the Scandisk gave mixed reports and it seems to be related to which batch of Scandisk was received.

So is yours a Lexar or Sandisk?

SanDisk Class 4 is no longer suitable for DSLR HD Video unless you have the cards of older generation chipset. For SanDisk, Class 6 is the minimum speed for such video recording. I have the problem like you before and verified with the SanDisk technician before making a top-up for the Class 6 cards. If you are using other brands of cards, it should not have such problem....

Just bit the bullet, cleared my wallet and got myself a 60D with 17-55 lens.

though many has blamed canon for plastic body, but hey the feel of the plastic is almost like metal to me though!

The solid body whilst not heavy, big ovf and mounted to 17-55 makes them like match made in heaven.

After i hear the shutter sound and tried the super fast AF with the lens, i am lost for words and cleared my wallet.

Initially wanted the 18-135 kit, but 17-55 just feels better. ;p

Hi everyone. Long time reader and first time poster here. Got my 60D Kit III (18-200mm) last weekend and bought the promotional 50mm f/1.8 II, plus a 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. The staff at M S Color (AMK Blk 711) were polite, helpful and reasonable with pricing. I think my gear is more than enough for me to learn how to take better photos and explore my inclinations before I need to upgrade. Now I am on the hunt for a good backpack - the free Canon messenger bag is really not my thing. Heard good things about Lowepro, though. Any fellow 60D users have recommendation?

Anyway, I am selling the kit lens to whoever wishing to get it new for less. Not sure if this practice (buying a kit and selling the kit lens) is frowned upon, though. If you asked me, kit and boxed are no different and I am happy to keep the couple hundred dollars. :)

hello guys,

I'm interested in getting a 60D body and I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if there are shops which accept credit card installment.
one shot pay using cash is abit :bheart: for me

TIA for any helpful answers!

I am using the Kata 3n1-22 with tripod holder... great for a semi pro body with lens attached plus 2 more lenses... cannot fit in 70-200 though... Got Vanguard uprise series to consider... and Think Tank... ( more ex but gd quality... using Speed Demon if I am not bringing a lot of thingy)...

Can try Cathay... think they allow payment by credit card without incurring extra cost... other shops will charge ya another 3% extra I think...

hi guys.

went to hold the 60D today, felt quite good. it's plastic body right? heard quite a number of complaints on this. but I felt the grip was quite good.

there's something I'd like to check though. as the 60D I held today was a display set, I couldn't turn it on. so I'd like to ask how does the shutter sound sound like? can anyone do a comparison between 60D's shutter sound and Nikon D300 shutter sound? something I'm familiar with so probably easier to relate to. thanks in advance!

cheers! :)

To be honest most of those people complaining are those who never touch a 60D before...

Anyway... the shutter sound is about the same for semi pro model... the entry level models got this electronic sound while 60D is more mechanical... BTW, does it really matter what is the shutter sound like? I thought the performance of the camera determine ya whether u should buy that particular model...

Sounds like the old 40/50D imo.

Maybe the shutter sound is a determining factor for him? :dunno:
I bought 60D because of the articulating screen, not that other brands dslr don't have, but i'm more comfortable with canon...

hey guys I'm just enquiring. preference of the mechanical sound is just me. not a determining factor. just checking out because I'm considering the 60D :)

Noted noted... you can be assured that it is a mechanical sound... ;)

hey thanks! :)

I'm actually rather interested in the 60D, but don't really need the swivel screen

Hi Postal,

Saw that you have a 24-70, may i know how it pair up with your 60D?
I have only the kit lens 18-55 & 35F2, looking for a red ring soon!.: )

Erm... I am using 24-105 mm... 24-70 is really heavy for my traveling purpose... and it has a much shorter range as well... I find 24-105 is great for candid shots and general purpose photography...

But then u will need to pair it up with a ultra wide angle... if not u will have problems taking shots of interiors or buildings and in some cases landscape...

BTW, the 17-55, 15-85 (I think) and 10-22 are L quality... but they cannot put a red ring on it as it is EF-S... do consider the above 3 lenses as well... :-D

Thanks for your advice! Postal! :)

As most ppl here, im also toying with either the 24-105 or the 24-70, most consideration wiil be the F-stops, but i will say the 105 with the IS will be very attractive! Curious, how does the 24-105 perform under low light? meaning which type of condition will be the minimum that the 24-105 can take before flashes has to be used? Sorry mate, still newbie trying to learn! Many thanks! Clubsnap is really the best site ard! YAh! : )

Hey, I just got an EOS 60D and there seem to be some problems with it~
This is the first time I'm using a DSLR and so if the problems are caused by some settings I have set, do let me know~

1. In Av mode in a dark enviroment, but not pitch black, without the flash, shutter speed is approx 1 second. When I push the flash button, which results in the flash firing, the shutter speed does not change, causing a severly over exposed picture. How come?
Edit*~~~~
Not just in a dark enviroment, but in any enviroment, when I turn on flash in Av mode, the shutter speed won't change! Help!
Edit Edit*~~~~
I am gonna double post this as a new thread, is that ok? I kinda, I mean, very urgently need the answer!!
