Official Canon EOS 60D User Thread Part I

Anyone has the issue of the 50mm f1.8 unable to focus properly on the 60D?
Was quite annoyed why it kept refocusing, am i doing something wrong?
Just trying to take a normal group picture under tungsten light...

Hey Postal,

Thanks for the advice.
Just a question, did you get the kit package when you got your 60D and sold away your lens later? or did you get the 60D body only?

I just get the body only as I have the lens a long time ago... :-D Great upgrade from 1000D... wahaha!

Hey guys, anyone of you have any issues with aftermarket hdmi to mini-hdmi cable for the 60D? I can't seem to connect it to my tv.... or rather the tv seems to have problem gettin a signal. Please advice, on the verge of pulling my hair out.

This cheap lens (although optically superb) has problems with practically every camera body. :)

Sigh, it's really a steal at $60...but not easy to use, esp indoors, always have to pump iso even though aperture is at 1.8...makes the pictures all grainy looking.

Beginning to miss my former kit lens :(

i am using 50mm f1.8, don't really have any problem with me, the color is really nice, usually i will find some light source to help me focus in indoor, but i always have a tripod along with me so that i can take longer shutter speed

Yup, i agree the color is fine. Today i was trying the video function and it automatically stopped for no apparent reason, after 11 sec, i tried it again and it stopped after 3 secs. Looked up the manual, it said could be due to card speed or overheating. It's not overheating cos i just took a few pictures before that and i'm in air-con restaurant, it's not due to card speed as i've recorded at the max resolution for 1 min plus previously.

Funny thing is, after that, i tried recording at all the different resolutions for 2 mins, worked fine!!! 60D is really a mysterious camera :P

Most likely your card rating lower than Class 6? That's the minimum card speed needed to sustain full HD video recording in the 60D. Sometimes lower rated class might cope, but it becomes a hit-n-miss thing depending on the make. If you shoot lower res than full HD, then the card speed requirement becomes lower so no need Class 6.

If your card can sustain video recording of about 12min full HD, then quite confirm card speed is enough (12 min is the limit due to a 4GB size per file constrain).

My card is SDHC, is that class 6? I got it from Canon directly. Anyway, i just recorded 12 mins and 20 secs at full HD to try. 8 GB card. Quite erratic huh?

SDHC is just an abbreviation for Secure Digital High Capacity, so can't tell what class speed from it.

You might have to look at the label or packaging to search for it, and not all manufactures rate their cards so you might not be able to find it also.

As far as I am aware, there have been 2 makes of free SDHC cards given by Canon for 60D purchase- the Lexar Platinium II, and the Scandisk (not sure which model). Both are supposedly rated at class 4, but feedbacks from forums here seem to indicate that all those who got the Lexar one have no issues with full HD recording while those who got the Scandisk gave mixed reports and it seems to be related to which batch of Scandisk was received.

So is yours a Lexar or Sandisk?

Just went to John 3:16 on Hari Raya. Was searching for the WA lens. I expected the 17-40 L but was instead recommended the 10-22 Canon. Yup 60D not full frame, no point getting the L lens. Tried out the lens, perhaps I dont have a wide view, the difference was not very obvious. Although he tried to show me a demo comparing from my 18-200 and a 10-22, yes there was difference in angle but not as wide as I expected. Haha! Tokina WA lens was available too but since the price difference is not that great, must well get canon right?

Any users of 10-22 could give me some advice? =)

10-22 not wide enough??:bigeyes:... if i am not wrong the next widest you can go is 8-16mm Sigma...

The Canon 10-22 is a very popular lens and considered one of the best EFS lenses available along with the 17-55 f/2.8 IS.

I think that if you set up your 18-200 in a tripod and took a photo and repeated the same thing with the 10-22, you would notice a BIG difference between 18 mm and 10mm. I would, without hesitation, recommend the 10-22.

FYI I am using a Lexar and so far do not find any issues when recording HD... :-D

10 mm is already pretty wide... any wider is the Sigma 8-16 mm or fisheye... :-D

went to try out at Peoples Park, sales person recommended a Tamron lens like 18mm to 250mm, ard $1.2k , Image stablisation 4x. Claims its sharper than Canon lenses, very sceptical leh.. any one using this lens or any comments?
thanks
also any lens to avoid? looking to get a first lens under $1k.

Then you should just stick to the kit lens or just look into the prime lenses. The kit lens are pretty good right now...

Richard, you should have gone to Funan instead since it is just nearby, there are more choices over the and you can compare the prices too. Seldom do we hear people buying from people's park. I think the shops there mostly sell grey set and to tourists.

As for the Tamron lens, I will not spend that kind of $ to buy it. If I were to spend above $1ooo on a lens, I will expect the IQ to be reasonably good. That Tammy 18-250 certainly don't fall into that category.

Since you are posting in this thread, I assume that you already have a 60D. Why didn't you buy the kit set with 18-200. It will cost you less and the IQ is definitely better than the Tammy 18-250 IMO.

SanDisk Class 4 is no longer suitable for DSLR HD Video unless you have the cards of older generation chipset. For SanDisk, Class 6 is the minimum speed for such video recording. I have the problem like you before and verified with the SanDisk technician before making a top-up for the Class 6 cards. If you are using other brands of cards, it should not have such problem....

richardg: good thing you resisted and did not buy. According to Clubsnap price guide these are the prices for the 18-250:

AF18-250mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II LD Aspherical (IF) [$710 MS] [$700 J316]

The Tamron 18-250 may be sharper than the 18-200 (according to Photozone), but it does not have VC (vibration control) which is very important at the tele end (unless you intend to use it on a tripod)

A better lens (in my opinion) is the Tamron 18-270. This lens has VC (rated highly). According to the Clubsnap price guides, this is what you should be paying:

AF18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical (IF) [$920 OP, Mar10] [$960 AP, Mar10] [$940 MS, Mar10] [$930 MS, Jul10] [$899 CP, Jul10]

It is best to shop at Funan but stay away from Bally Photo (scam shop). Good luck.
