Hi 5d iii users ~

Just like to know if the on-camera Noise Reduction apply to Raw files ? or just Jpeg Files ?
Any pros and cons between the "Standard , Low , High" settings ?

Thanks

Those settings will only affect jpeg. None of it affect the raw files.

Can I know the latest price for the awesome 5d mark 3 with kit lens in Singapore ?

Hi bros who are on Mac OS, anyone here experienced EOS Utility crashing when trying to transfer files from your 5D3?

Actually, i do believe that there is some NR done when you shoot in mRaw.
The camera is a FF at 22mp so only at 22mp is the RAW untouched..once you shoot mRAW at 10mp, the camera will downsize the image and when doing this, i believe some NR is applied.

Give it a try, shoot the same image at RAW and mRAW at a high ISO like 6400 or 12800 and you will notice that the mRAW is alot cleaner than the RAW file but not as sharp…similar to what happens when you apply NR on jpg.
At least that is what i found…i almost ALWAYS shoot in mRAW until i found out about this phenomenon by chance one day and now i've since reverted back to shooting full RAW and apply NR in PP… And no, i don't want to turn OFF NR becaue i also shoot Jpg at the same time and it's a hassle to keep turning the NR on and off..sure forget..

That's interesting. I don't shoot mRAW and don't see myself doing it at all so I can't comment on that. Why would you want to do that? I see the only reason is to save space but HDDs are so cheap now.

actually, I shoot mRaw too. reason is simple: HDDs may be cheap, but memory cards are still quite costly. I dont need the full raw size anyway and the mraws are good enough for A4 prints.

really waiting my heart out for the arrival of my 16-35L II, meanwhile just trying out some low key stuffs with the 5DMK3. planning to shoot some family portraits with my flashes, so my E-M5 doubled up as my practice subject first! :)

I shoot in mRaw because most of the time, the images are solely used for online purposes only and mRaw is plenty for online photos. I'm not a commercial photographer that needs to give the super high res to clients etc so 10Mp is actually ALOT for a computer screen.
And i also don't crop my photos 100%. I believe in getting the framing right the first time and cropping only very minimally so having 22MP isn't really necessary.
However, because of this NR i find on the mRaw files, i've already gone back to shooting full RAW, except now i shoot less shots and only choose the best to keep.

Should i get 16-35 or 24-105? :D

I think you should get the Canon 16-105.;p All kidding aside, you will get many varying answers to your query. Both lenses are excellent pieces of glass but serve very different purposes.

The 16-35 is a wide angle lens good for landscape, architecture, etc. where you are trying to capture as much as possible into the frame.

The 24-105 is an excellent general all-purpose walk-around lens that many people have on their cameras 80 to 90 percent of the time.

Both lenses can be rented so that you can try them out for yourself over a day or more. You can also go to the Canon showroom at VIVO to try them out for a few minutes.

So I can try any lenses at canon showroom? Just like ncs?

Yes, you can try any lens that they have in stock... so long as they have it. It is not as good as the Hong Kong showroom which has just about every lens Canon makes. Nonetheless, the showroom at Vivo has most of the commonly used lenses.

Don't forget to bring your camera. Alternatively, you can use one of their cameras but you need to bring your own CF card.

Thanks for the reply :) wanted to feel few lenses for a long long time hahaha

The only thing I don't like about 16-35 is the distortion between 16-20mm.

True there is distortion but this is common among all UWA's. It is very easy to fix in post processing.

i thought LR fix it pretty well with the lens correction function.

all UWAs are susceptible to barrel distortion, nothing much to fret over unless you really use ruler to measure the lines.

Sorry for not making myself clear, i am jumping over to Canon so i am choosing my first lens to go with 5DMK3. I shall try them in Canon showroom later :D thanks
