Good to hear that. Haven't tried it personally but a friend also says the image is sharp as well. Still I'm eying for 15-85mm, if my budget permits. I heard John 3:16 has stock for $1,0XX cash :)

Alux,

I've just gotten a 15-85 for my 550D.
I got it here in mainland China for 4360yuan. Pretty good lens. Sharp @ 85 MM. pretty good for some macro actually.
However, it makes the 550 abit unbalanced and abit uncomfortable to sling.

FYI- The 550D (body only) is 4850 Yuan (1005 sgd) in China with 1 year warranty.

Warranty is local mainland + hong kong warranty. Won't be covered in Singapore.

Wow that's very cheap! But correct, my concern buying internationally is the warranty.

@auden
JO sells for $1080 but CP sells for $1060(excl GST)

Hi guys
I've just registered to join this thread :) I purchased the 550d kit at it show last week. I'm looking to buy 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 as an upgrade of the kit lens. I think this will be a good upgrade but most stores have no stock. (Anybody knows where there is stock pls Pm me.) I don't like the 17-85mm one. But I do have the cheap 50mm f/1.8 II which is my favorite at the moment because of its sharpness.

Very nice camera indeed. And very useful thread by the way. I've backread from page 1 :)

Bro, I think you should really consider the Sigma 17-70mm f2.8 DC OS HSM before going for the canon 15-85. One good thing to point out is.... the Sigma 17-70 is HALF THE PRICE of the Canon 15-85IS USM. Both of them has USM/HSM. Both has IS/OS(image/optical stabilization).
The only advantage canon has is that it has wider and farther focal lenghts...but heck...the Sigma is only at half the price and comes with a LENS HOOD....

I'm one of many who got this camera at the show. Paid $1,788 for the body + 18-135mm lens. There is The five million dollar home, 2 8GB SD cards and a 4GB SD card in place of the out of stock lens workbook, crappy tripod. Since this is my first DSLR, I guess playing with it more is the best way to know it inside out. So, I've been bringing it out every opportunity I get. For now, I know I need a macro lens cuz I am very active in the kitchen and with this lens, I'm not able to get up close to the fine details.

After reading thru' the deals here, I think mine was a bad buy. Well, regretting won't make anything feel better so I will embrace it all the more. And a photographer once told me no one will like their first camera!

And my question is, how crucial is a dry cabinet?
I'm keen in getting an extra battery too for when I travel. If the prices might drop over time then no hurry for me in getting it now.

I don't think battery prices will drop over time. Likely 600D and even 1000D replacement will use the new LP-E8 battery too.

btw, sigma lens is F2.8-F4. I heard the OS and HSM version has inferior quality compared to the excellent 17-70mm DC/HSM.
Don't be too happy with HSM as the HSM is a micro HSM rather than a superior Ring-USM.

Ahhhh noted with thanks!

thanks for the tip. what could you comment about its image quality? is it as sharp as the 15-85mm? cos the canon one i tested and it appears fine. much sharper than the ef50mm 1.8 wide open (i compared)
