Hey people, browsing this thread for fun and also saw this lens for sale in Oz for about 629AUD. If you are visiting, you can use the gst refund scheme that they have; then it'll be only like around 570AUD-ish thereabouts. I bought my 70-300vr for about AUD660 this way :)

Me, I kena bbb virus lately so online window shopping madly :)

HTHs!

That is on a high side. check out cameras.net.au

Anyway, the market forces will decide if the pricing is appropriate. I have not used the lens myself but based on the facts we all know, it is indeed far too expensive.

The market prices are driven by supply and demand. New products typically price high for the early adopters. It's a matter of time that prices will drop to more realistic levels, assuming the demand falls. Take for instance 18-200mm VR, after 1 year from launch, prices remain high because of high demand and low supply.

So, if you want 50mm f1.4 price to drop, just don't buy the lens. And once Nikon sees that no one is buying the lens, they will drop the price. But that won't happen for a while because there are bound to be people out there that will buy the lens at the launch price.

This is early adopter price.. If you can wait, wait. Else, can get the AFD version.

Yep, $798 for AP.

Bro you also aiming for this one too? I think the price is fair if it delivers lar.

Dunno anybody got any bokeh tests bt the 2.

Can any of the few tens of buyers here can post pictures of OOF light bulbs and see if it still has condom rings?

With such a high pricing the question is now how is this new Nikon 50mm 1.4 compared to the Sigma 50mm 1.4. ? I bought the Sigma last week as the new Nikon was not still available and I was traveling to Vietnam. Price tag looks similar. I seems that the Sigma benefits from better reviews than the Nikon. Any comparison available ?

The Sigma is bokeh king. Very buttery from what I see. I read a bokeh compario bt the AF-D and Sigma, the Nikkor is no fight. The AF-S is supposed to be slightly better. How much did you get the Sigma for and where? If its not too much i'd get the Sigma liao.

For my use, the coating which peels off ugily of the Sigma benefits me also. Makes it look cheap....low profile.

I got it for $S840 at Orient Photo (Sim Lim Square) - Build quality looks ok. Just a little bit heavy for a 50mm !

Huat ah! That's cheaper than I thought.

Bro, can you test for me if your copy focuses correct, say focus at the eye or nostrils or lips, indoor flourescent light also can. Test a couple of shots from 2m to 5m distances ranges, see if the AF is accurate or not. I read sometimes it has some issues in close range focussing, not sure if it is true or not....must handle it myself and gauge.

I was at Cathay Photo to test out this lens on my D60. The built in motor to auto focus helps alot but the picture quality was dissapointing.

Using the same settings, I tried it together with the 50mm f/1.8D and 50mm f/1.4D, taking some shots of a white user manual. Somehow, the images from this lens came out yellowish compared with the 2 older lenses.

I was quoted $750 cash payment.

In the end, I opted for the 50mm f/1.8D. Although I have to manual focus on my D60, still no regrets.

i just tested the 50 f/1.4G with a D40 and a D90. 2 out of 5 photos exhibited a yellow tint, the other 3 were fine. I then tested the 50 f/1.4D with the same cameras with the same results. In the end we attributed this to the fluorescent lighting.

the lens looks really nice but the price a bit ex. will wait for it to drop a bit more before i consider getting.

How is the focusing speed of the lens? Some said that it is only marginally faster than the 18-55VR and cannot be compared to the likes of 24-70.

i didn't compare with other lenses but it's fast enough for me.

went to CP today...
was informed that the AF-S work worse than AF-D
will test it out tomorrow...

briefly was informed that the focusing was slower, and often out of focus, the bokeh wasn't that fantastic

Some argued that the not-so-fantastic focusing speed is due to the longer focusing throw of the lens. And you said "often out of focus", do you mean front/back focusing? Though reviews have shown that the bokeh of the lens may not be comparable to that of the Sigma but it is still better than the AFD version.

I may still consider getting it because of its smaller size than the Sigma.

is it a grey set or local set? got warranty? Such lens may need to get the AF calibrated at local sigma service center. I think if the nikon is $790, I may get the sigma 50mm too.

some say this, some others say that
some argue this, some argue that

test in shop for at most half hour... how can...

only true way is buy them, own them, and them determine the results then tell us

can always sell the not needed in the classisfied at a loss

Here's a comparison between the 50mm f/1.4 G, 50mm f/1.4D and 24-70mm...

http://www.utopia-photography.ch/lenses/50mmG/b/a01.html

Can see that the 2 newer Nikon AF-S 'G' lens have a slight warmer cast compares to the older AF lens.
We can also see that the latest 50mm corner sharpness is better than the previous one too.
Hmmm.... But, for the Nikon 24-70mm at 50mm corner is still consider no good even it close down to f/8. I wonder Canon/Sony 24-70mm will have on par or even better corner sharpness than the Nikon. Anyway, off topic already. Oops....
