Yes you can. You will just lost the AF. Can still do MF.

I could add on to this.
As my observation goes, many people think swivel screen is a gimmick to make the camera more expensive.
That's so wrong. I shoot toys and I enjoy shooting them at really low but contrasting light. To auto focus on a still subject everything time in extreme low light is such a killer.
Swivel screen + live view makes my work flow so much smoother and intuitive.
I don't need to lie on the floor to look at my viewfinder either if i want to do any low angle shots. All I need to do at most is to squat. Convenient no?

1. which place here in singapore is best to photoshoot a sunset?
2. set up for the following parameters for optimum capture of a sunset:
a. ISO
b. White Balance
c. Mode Dial Priority(A, S, P, or M)
d. Exposure Compensation
e. Aperture
f. Shutter Speed
g. Meterring Mode
h. AF Mode
i. Focus Mode
j. Active D-Lighting
k. Picture Control

yes, the lens can be used, but u can only do manual focusing

Glad to hear about the great reviews from you guys. Anyway, I wanna ask, is the kit lens, 18-55mm good? Or should I get another lens right away? This is my first DLSR, so I wanna ask, whats the real difference in the lens anyway? I noticed the max aperture for the 18-55mm is just f/3.5, which is pretty small, right? Is that a bad thing?

The kit lens is great, just continue shooting with it till u find its limitation. From there, u will know which lens u need next.

there's no BEST place in singapore for sunset or sunrise la... which is probably why the question was not answered.
It's a very subjective thing, depending on whether you prefer buildings, water, scenery, etc.
1) Where's the best chicken rice in Singapore?
2) What's the best place in Singapore to live?
these type of questions are very subjective... hope you know what I'm trying to say.

Hi guys! I just bought a 2nd hand D5000 today!
yes, it is good. its a recommended kit lens. very sharp in its class. im using it most of the time, its good for macro, landscape, portraits and even night. its responsive. maximize your use of it till you master it. dont buy another lens yet until you fully learn its capability. i have many astounding photos by just using the 18-55mm VR.
save your money for future use, it might come in handy, its not just in photography.
the real difference with other lens is that;
to a prime lens, its aperture is larger therefore its very sensitive to light, good for low light and those photos with great bokeh (depth of field or out of focus background), the sharpest among other lens class. the only draw back of this is it has a fixed focal length compared to your 18-55mm it can zoom in and out, from 18 to 55mm. most cheap prime lens dont have VR to counter handshake.
to a telezoom lens, the zoom end is farther than your 55mm, good for wildlife photography and portraits. not sensitive to light, mostly sucks on low light (but not all)
to a wide angle lens, the wide angle end is much wider than 18mm. good for landscapes

Good idea, I love my 17-50... Really worth the upgrade to shoot at a constant (sharp) f4.0 throughout.
