Good idea, I love my 17-50... Really worth the upgrade to shoot at a constant (sharp) f4.0 throughout.

yup..just bought the 35mm f1.8, so this will have to wait for the moment, pocket not deep enough:(

btw, is it hard to find a sharp copy of the 17-50?

Nope... In my humble opinion get the non-VC with in-built motor one. Saves money, you don't need VC in that range... Somemore less moving parts = less chance for **** ups (i.e. misalignment, etc etc etc).

Some people say the non-VC model also sharper. Considerations! Most of my landscapes were shot using this lens... Excellent lens, especially for the money.

Hoho! I wanna be part of this group too! Should I get the D5000 now at trusted stores in Funan/SLS or should I wait for the COMEX this Sep?

don't have to wait for comex...they only give u additional useless freebies n sell at retail price...get from shops for discount off the price better..

I finally got my problem fixed on the D5000.

My D5000, below the lens part, on the left, will produce a "sqee" "sqee" sound when you press on it. Bring to Nikon service center today and they told me one of the screws is loosen. They tighten it and now no more problem!!! Happy user here. :)

w00t! Thanks takuyazzz for advice. I finally h00ted it at SLR Revo! Happy + heartache cuz 1st time buy camera this ex! But I think its definitely worth it!

Have not played around much. Now still charging. Going down Nikon later to collect the freebies!

Hi everyone, welcome to the family.
Been using D5000 since nov 2009. I love it.

how u guys find the 35mm lens?

I used it 90% of the time.

A great walkabout lens. can cover photography ranging from portraits to sceneries~

plus it's light to bring around!

It's really good.

Finally got down to tagging most of my pictures - you can view the pictures taken by my D5000 + 35mm F1.8 here: HERE!

Hi guys, im new here and this is my first post.

Back when i was in sec school(abt 14 years ago), i used to play around with a Nikon FM2 and that was the last time i ever used an SLR. Been using compacts ever since.

Recently however i've decided to get myself a DSLR. Since i've become sort of a nikon fan, naturally i wanted my dslr to be a nikon. Since im new to digital SLRs and my budget is quite tight, i am considering the D5000. The decision is not final though, as i still have some lingering questions.

Firstly, is the lack of built-in AF motor in the body a serious disadvantage? I mean in terms of performance, and also availability of lenses. Would the lenses be VERY limited and more expensive?

2ndly, i understand that this model is about more than a year old. Does anybody know if there would be any new model replacing it soon?

Sorry if my post is kinda long winded.. I already did my research but i would really appreciate comments from d5000 users. Thanks in advance to those who reply..

Hi Slipdisq,

I understand your concerns of the MF/AF features of cameras and probably you know the advantages and disadvantages already. But the 18-55mm kit lens provides enough coverage for a camera of budget. Lens wise even if you get it from stores the Kit II would be the one with the 55-200mm which will both AF. So anyway this means that the lack of a motor is fine, but what is your purpose of buying in the first place? For normal usage the D5000 would be a fantastic choice already. In the case of lenses, you could always look for deals with your friendly CS users! :) it is not cheap to buy first hand ones anyway so in my case with my D5000, i bought some second hand lenses online and i found that even through that disadvantage of not having a motor, good deals can still be found! We just cannot restrict ourselves to AF lenses, MF ones are great too! Therefore this also means it is in no way more expensive either. By having used the FM2 before, you'd be familiar with this camera for sure!

True that the model is already more than a year old, but the LCD screen is really something that you can look forward to. At first it may not seem of much use but along the way it will be surprising, the amount of ways it can be used. Whether there are new camera models that will replace the lower tier DLSRs like the D3000 and D5000 is unknown, we know that there will be new ones for the higher tiers or at least heard rumours of it, but i believe it would be sometime before they can come up with a version to take over the D5000. So no worries unless your budget is more flexible, if not, the D5000 is a fantastic choice with great results.

I have just started, so I might need some help with the lens selections.

The AFS lenses are slightly on the high side so can you recommend any other brand for the below;

50mm, 1.8
24 - 75, F2.8 (F > 2.8 also can)
55 - 200mm

Thanks in advance.

Hi, if you don't mind I'll post this on the thread? Is it the Proud d5000 users group?

Hi all, very pleased to receive this query from coolsguy so I thought I'd share it here for everyone's knowledge.

My recommendations for D5000:

1) Tamron 60mm f2.0 (Replacing the 24-75 F2.8/50mm F1.8) and introducing Macro Capabilities if needed.

Quoting Thom Hogan
Here are my choices for third party lenses until Nikon's lineup becomes what I want it to be:

DX portrait lens: Tamron 60mm f/2 Macro

2) Nikkor 55-200 AF-S VR The 55-200 is an excellent lens for the money. If you've got more money can look into the Nikkor 70-300 (FF lens that works excellent on APS-C)

3) Sigma 50mm F1.4
If you really need a 50mm prime... But I would rather you get the 35mm F1.8 for a "normal view" instead. For portraits, look at the Tamron 60mm...

4) Nikkor 16-85mm AF-S VR
Forget about 28-75, it's an odd focal length for APS-C, and you don't really need the speed of a constant F2.8. For low light, use flash/tripod. I am of the opinion that you really need a good FF camera with excellent high-ISO capabilities to really make use of F2.8. If die die need F2.8, go for:

5) Tamron 17-50 F2.8 non-VC, BIM
Excellent lens for the price. Great all-around walkabout lens. Check my flickr and search.

Hope this helps you out!

Thanks a lot for the information. Quite a number of choices actually. I guess it all boils down to what we want to shoot most of the time.

Personally, I just need a walk about (maybe the Tammy 17-50 F2.8) + Portrait (again Tammy 60/2.0).

Will do some tests and put up the results.

Thanks for the wonderful thread.
