just got my D5000 & still reading the manual ...

Welcome to CS and the D5000 family!

And reading the manual is a wise first move before using it . However, if you are dont want to wait too long, click to Auto mode and shoot away, still will produce great pics ;) .

Cheers!

thks ichiowen,

I assume u are using the 50mm for your kids?
How does it perform outdoors?(do we need to constantly adjust the manual-focusing too?)

My concern is I will end up fiddling to much with the focusing, that the "moment" is gone.

I dont have kids. My 50mm purpose just for shooting indoor. Taking pple for events like bday party, baby full month, etc. So much more easy to shoot than kids. At least baby wont move much.

You are using "remote" mode and you have tested your hardware can activate your friend's D90 - meaning you know which way to point the remote and the remote's battery is not dead. Try pointing your remote straight at the front of your camera only one meter away. If it does not fire, the possibility of camera h/w failure arises.

Actually i'm using his remote on my cam. It is working. Only problem is distance detecting not that gd. At a distance for group photograph, my friend's remote able to detect his D90 but i am unable.

Hello D5000 users,

I need some advice, I am considering getting a AF 50mm f/1.8D lens which is good portrait pictures right?
But I'm afraid the lack of AF in the lens will prove to be difficult in situation like taking photos of children running around.
Is there any cheaper portrait prime lens, you guys can recommend?

for children portrait on D5000, AF-S (period).
AF 50mm will get u a very decent shot of static subject (with nice bokeh), but you will be hopeless against moving targets (kiddos).

I just got the 35mm F1.8 and very happy with the results.

But the 35mm f/1.8 lens is lacking VR. Has it troubled you during taking a shot?

VR does not bother me,
- More important to have higher iso (1600 and above)
- set A to F1.8 or F2.2
- allow for multiple bursts (instead single shot)
- I am still experimenting between D5000's AF-S (single static) and AF-C (continuous)

.for additional shots , u can view flickr and search for album "nikkor 35mm".
I have shared my sample photos at another thread..

good luck.

Yup, fast lens normally do not need VR - before your hands can drift a little - *Snap!* Clear image taken... Nice takes, lad! Tempting me once again to look at the 35 mm.

Time to consider whether your remote's signal is strong enough. Battery weak, lousy hardware etc etc.

Proud owner of D5000 reporting! =) even though i am a total NEWBIE to photog, i did quite some reading up before deciding between D90 and D5000... finally chose the D5000 to start my newly acquired hobby!

But i have one problem, due to my severe lack of photog know-hows, I feel that i have been doing injustice to D5000's full capabilities... therefore, can anyone show me some ropes to capturing great pics with the D5000? I prefer to practice photog in small groups or perhaps 2 or 3?

Btw i am starting with the basic 18-55mm AF-S VR and 55-200mm AF-S VR, by recommendation from my friend. =)

Thanks guys!

welcome, I am also total newbie to dslr.
- there are two auto modes (choose the one without flash)
(for some reason, I keep seeing dslr users FLASHing away  (it totally spoils the picture)
- I am kiasu, so I set my d5000 to multiple bursts

Once you like the effects and are comfortable with the controls, play with aperture, iso, shutter.
Browse through forums, for pictures which u like, eg firework, ask for the "Settings" then try to copy.

Once confident, proceed to advance details, play with "Manual".

d5000 user here too. now in a dilema to get a 35mm first or a 55-200mm first. or a tamron 17-50mm first.

was thinking of that. but. i would prefer a nikon lens. that's why i'm leaning more to the 35mm. the 17-55mm nikon price is too much for me. hahaha.

simple. Stick with your kits lens, since u obviously have no clue ..yet ;p
Zoom into your "niche", then shortlist your lens later.

**ignore my comments, if your wallet is fat ;)

Well, what penglee said.

If you really have to buy a lens, I'd still get the 17-50. The "rather it be Nikon" thing is nonsense, although Nikon's quality is surely better, the current quality of 3rd party lenses are comparable now.

I'm a 100% Tamron user! :D

hey! i am a newbie to dslr photography so IMHO i think that mastering the body controls using the kit lens (18-55mm) and 55-200mm is very very important, if you havent yet found a particular kind of photography which you like. This is what i am doing now. 55-200mm AF-S VR is not really expensive and its pretty value for money in terms of the sharpness in the photos which it gives. A local Advertising Company art director agrees with me on this point. =)

I think that we should only start investing in more expensive lens when we can think fast, act fast and adjust fast enough with the camera while taking shots on the move. We would then be doing the better lenses justice. =)

but that's just me. i have decided to go for the 35mm. hope to get it later! its cheaper and i want to try a prime lens.
