Nikon still have not catch up with the Canon1DsMIII. Maybe soon?

James

1Ds Mark III is Canon's attempt to eat into the MF digital market. This is the top of the pro market pyramid. The much substantial middle and base section of the pyramid is where the bulk of $$$ exists. Both camps will have to go all out to capture it. No more half-a$$ed punches from now on.

Unless one is already a hardcore user of many expensive L lenses, or really need that 21MP, I can see the majority of pros switching back to the Nikon D3. The 12MP is actually good enough for most jobs. Just look at the many fashion photogs who swapped their 1Ds Mark IIs for 5Ds.

I still believe Canon has the superior technology and R&D muscle to come on top. But they have been taking the "milk the cash cow slowwwly" approach. You know, like Micro$oft, releasing features that they already have little, by little, by little with each incremental release. As a photographer, I truly hate that!

well canon makes their own sensors....

and a super super super unreliable rumour said they bought over contax...

then u see a whopping 22mp on a 35mm format camera..

what do these three statements tell u?

;p

gunbucker you are full on correct!!!

Finally, a nice counter move from Nikon.

Canon has shown us they can produce pretty good auto-focus in the EOS 1v and EOS 3 flim camera days. Even the EOS 30 and EOS 50 had pretty respectable auto-focus back then and they chose to cripple the auto-focus in the D30 when they produced their 1st digital camera.

With the D3 AND D300, lets hope canon stop playing games and come up with their long awaited 1 Dv and 3D.

For now, I shall stick to my old D60.

:)

blue monster, very well side, and a wise decision on your part.

It is boils down to the proverbial Tortoise and Hare story. Canon has been dicking around with us for the longest time (APS-C, APS-H, FF) with their market lead. Nikon as slow as they are, makes the right moves FOR THEIR CUSTOMERS.

So Canon, stop bl00dy dicking around with us anymore, and give us some serious goodies. Fire the dammn marketing idiots, and redeem your pride!

Fairness to Canon

- Use CMOS 1st since 2000 or 2002
- IS long tele (500,600mm) since 1998
- FF DSLR since 1DsM1

They have done good to the photographers already. If competitors want to follow the success stories, they have to come out something better right?

Anyway, no more upgrades for me.

James

how come u dun go to nikon then? what if canon never truly "redeems" itself?

i mean... u can't deny they make tonnes of money this way.. why would they change? :)

This past few weeks, seems to me like each of the superpowers (Nikon & Canon)just Exploded a Nuclear device to prove to other that they are a force to be Reckoned with. I must say Canon one is a Technological break through with 21mp FF, while Nikon Finally answer the call for FF and having 51 Af sensor. This is a day that we will remember for Nikonians.

I still believe Canon has the better technology. Yes, any shrewd business will attempt to milk its market this way, especially when it doesn't have any true competitor. In other businesses, this is also known as a MONOPOLY. Regardless of industry, whenever there is a monopoly, customers are the losers.

This is why, despite being a Canon user, I'm strangely happy about Nikon's counter-move. Am I going to switch camps at this juncture? Hell no! But I'm just so friggin' excited how things will turn up from this point on!

The bottomline is.....we just need a DSLR to shoot our own pics and if it satisfies us, can already and not becos of equipment.

Word. Better camera still can't make a better photographer.

True. But it sure can make life a heck of a lot easier! Ooohh, I just can't wait how kick-a$$ the 5D Mark 2 will be! It's Canon's last wildcard. Dare I say 1D-ish AF and weather sealing trickling into the 5D Mark 2 specs? ;p

Its is true a better camera can't make a better photographer. But here in today, technology moves so fast, especially for electronics. At minimum even if we don't go about changing camps or upgrading, its pretty fun to see what shocking new things these companies come up with. Long time ago, it was a whole decade before a new pro body came out, now its within 2-3 years. Once this fevour dies down, we'll see ever more reviews and complaints about problems consumers find with the new bodies. I'm sure many are now waiting to see whether Canon will stand up and put out something nice for the 5D replacement and finally listen to consumers and stop burying the mirror lockup in menus.

"Milk the cash cow slowly", this reminds me of a comic where at a company meeting, a new software was just developed. So the boss says, now take away 10 features and sell the product. We'll slowly add the 10 features one by one as "upgrades".

It is an interesting time for many of us. Camera release announcements within days of each other, generating so much excitement. I've always been waiting for a turning point for both Nikon and Canon in the DSLR market, could this really be it? Or does Canon have technologies up its sleeve ready for the 5D Mark II?

i am just thinking how long would 5DMKII take to come out. Some how after today, i think canon just throw the final design of 5DMKII out the window and went back to the drawing board with a bigger team. lol
but i think MKII would only come out after sept 08 or it will hurt their 1DsMKIII sales if 5DMKII is to have a big improvement.

It could be true... Canon was developing the 1D mk3 since 2004, so I think it's quite likely the 5D is already being developed and prepared for release...

Canon will somehow make sure that their flagship 1 series will be the best and 5D Mk 2, if it is going to exist, will not beat 1Ds Mk 3. Canon is targeting at different segments of the market.

Canon and Nikon, go go go, fight among each other. We, consumers will benefit!

Ha... I just realized something... this is the only time Canon users can slam their beloved cameras and fav Canon company without being flamed much. If it had been done on other days b4 the D3 and D300 were out, I bet there'd have been a huge barrage of replies saying "It's the photographer who makes the image, not the cam" or "Not happy sell your equipment lah!" or "Are you a camera collector or photographer?!" or...

I'm surprised to see some of the usual big and regular Canon posters here also joining in the blame war on Canon. Also, from a rejoicing mood at the coming of 1Ds mk3 and 40D, now it seems like most Canon users' moods are severely dampened! Amazing... Does tell you it's all in the mind whether you are happy/satisfied with whatever you have in life.

As for Canon... yeah, I realize they do some very weird marketing. Like the move from 20D to 30D. And the way they introduce new models on their compact cams are the worst... good features get removed, a bit of additional here and there and they call it a new model. There is never a major breakthru to make one really "salivate" at an upgrade.

If you notice, they also spend $ on getting celebrities to model for their cams.. In the long past, I remember they've had Andre Agassi, now they've got Maria Sharapova for the compacts. I don't know of any other camera companies who do this. Wat to make out of this?

Much said, I don't think Canon have to worry as far as pro cams are concerned. Their top of the line L lenses especially those super telephotos and superb 1D series can still give Nikon a good kick.

I think what they should seriously worry now is the lower end and mid range cams. Nikon has an affordable and good D40 for beginners. Now that the coming D300 can muscle its way past the 40D, Canon might just lose some more customers in the advanced amateur or semi pro level.

Great arguments, but I do wonder...

How come most amateurs have tons of negative complaints about C or N's cams but the real pros who do this for big bucks (like guys covering NFL/NBA/Olympics/Nat Geo/Discovery) rarely b1tches about not having this and that feature and usually just stick to what works for them even if it's 1-2 generations old hehe.

The manufacturers must love reading about how followers are killing each other with "im better" battles while they just keep on raking in the cash.

:thumbsup:FOR U NIKON GOOD IMPROVEMENT!

I don’t get it. Why is it every time excitement bubbles up over a new camera feature, some wet blanket will come and deride progress with the ‘its not going to make you a better photographer’ line?

I have a different mindset. I embrace technological progress.
We take autofocus, in-camera exposure metering, auto flash power metering etc all for granted now. Yet, all these features were once-upon-a-time ‘new’. So too, today’s new advancements will come to be regarded as ‘standard’ and ‘useful’ in due time.

Supposing Canon or Nikon were giving out free upgrades to existing users, would you happily go and trade in your old camera for the newest toy? Of course you would! Everybody appreciates new features.

Honestly, the ‘its not going to make you a better photographer’ is just our way of rationalisation. It helps us cope with our financial limitations of not being able to regularly throw good money away for the newest incremental upgrade.
