ha ha... may be you look like a carrot.

i saw 3 pieces at OP just now...

OP is white box? I prefer NSC recognized copies.

white box means grey set? OP is known for that. =p
amazed by the differential in prices across the shops. any other experience to share?

those boxes i saw at OP are the golden boxes, like the previous version of 70-200 boxes.

Just that there is a label (N) at the front. i doubt its grey sets, unless nowadays they put in a lot of effort in grey sets.

no idea about prices though, cos i just happened to walk by OP in my hunt for a wireless-N router at SLS... i am still v happy with my 70-200 VR I, so not asking, lest i poison my ownself...

Then you better stay off this thread or don't blame us if you kena poison.

i thought this lens was lighter than my vr1.
i was dead wrong.

The new lens is 70g heavier but 6mm shorter. ;)

Hello,

Thanks for the info.

I am shocked/surprised that Cathay has the highest quote. They usually have good prices. That leaves only OP, Lords & MS Color for good prices.

Same issues as what we discuss in the photo biz section isn't it? ie, undercutting - but some may say it is competitive price. A matter of perspective :)

That's because very few sets were brought in for this first batch. Most of the dealers probably only got one or 2 sets each. My dealer was surprised that he actually got 3 sets when most of the other dealers he knew got only 1 set.

Because of the scarcity of supply, some dealers might decide to keep the price high to make more money from those who have deeper pockets and can't wait. When more sets are available in later shipments, the prices would surely fall.

Hi chngpe01,

I totally get you on the supply and demand perspective. =)

That said, I am not surprised at the price.

I am surprised at Cathay's stance to bring the price up > Song's. I have been buying stuff at Cathay since the late 80s, they didn't adopt this practice last time. Times have changed.

Hi all,

I am a newbie here and confused with some of the messages.

White box means grey set - what is the implication of grey set. Is it not original Nikon or is it that the product is not meant for singapore market.

Is there any lenses of such high configuration which are not Nikon but sold as Nikon and can there be duplicates/fakes ?

I understand warranty for lenses is international warranty so how does it matter whether you buy a Nikon lens for singapore market or any other market.

Can buying from SLR be buying the wrong thing.

Thanks,
Madhu

I don't think there are replicas if that is what you mean. Too high tech to copy.

Grey sets are meant for overseas export and not for retail locally. (Or something along the line) So the service center will not recognize it and will not service it. You have to find... "black market" for servicing?

Go to this link http://www.nikon.com.au/pagearticle.php?pageid=65-52b9b66212
It explains why they can't service grey sets even if got international warranty.

i think at the end of the day, they will service the item as long as it is a original Nikon but since it is a grey set, they do not need to honor the warranty, thus you need to pay for the repairs.

it's business... when you have a shop run by your brother, sister, mother, son.... the overheads are lower, if the shop is in a lower cost mall, overheads are lower, if the shop only carry the essential, the overheads are lower... so and so fro.

Thus, smaller stores can afford to go for thinner margins (3.4K quoted by CP is by credit card, I think you can still get another 2-3% lower if you pay by cash) while CP being a full service store, they have to get a healthier margin.

Net, if you prefer to run around for all the photographic needs or not on the priority list, do go for the best price (make economic sense) but if you want to focus all your spending in 1 location so you get better service and priority listing, then find one that can meets all your needs but be prepared to pay a slight premium.

however, we do have people who just focused on the lowest pricing (definitely nothing wrong with this) but start to bitch when they can't get something they wanted from the full service shop although it is available but reserved for the regular customers. basically, you are not their regular customer, so they do not need to prioritize you.
