[ News ] New Pancake Powerzoom 14-42 lens for M4/3 from Lumix X Pro!!!

Another limitation could be how fast it can "zoom" to the focal length you need. And also it could suck more juice from the battery since it's electrically operated therefore reducing shutter count? The small size is really convenient though, but... primes still rock haha

Might feel a bit weird without the focusing ring.

somewhat agree. pending on final price.
btw, GF3 is available by body only. that pave your way to buy GF3 + Powerzoom 14-42

This will kill off LX5 / XZ-1 sales.

I do not think so. The XZ1 is still significantly smaller.

On a GF3? it would be slightly thicker than xz1 or lx5 but with a sensor 4? times larger? wow..

Holy ****ing ****. That is small.

How big is the 45-175 compared against the 45-200?

45-200 slightly longer, lens filter 52vs46mm, much heavier (>180g), internal focusing and the lens doesn't extend out. if it's really sharper than 45-200, would be a killer.

More side by side comparison here

see this about the 45-175

it boasts an outstanding compactness with approx. 90.0 mm in length and approx. 210g in weight for ultra-high mobility

look at the lens on an EP3 :) i will get the one in silver to match my white EP3 :D

interesting comment below this image on the dpreview hands on preview of the pancake zoom, does this mean that the OIS can work in conjunction with the IBIS on the Oly bodies for double IS

"The Panasonic Lumix G Vario X PX 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 Power OIS is fully compatible with Olympus PENs"

When you mount Panny lens on Oly Pen, you have 2 options on IS. Either OIS or IBIS. Activate both IS will not work, it would give you no IS. So you gotto to choose either one, and it is not that difficult to decide on which one to go with. OIS is more effective than IBIS.

It will be fully compatible, just that focusing distance on the lcd will not be shown. The relevant LUMIX G bodies (GF2, GF3, GH2, G3) will receive firmware updates for this to work.

Yup, i know, have been using a lumix 45-200 on my Oly Pen and have been switching off the IBIS as well. OIS on long range lens definitely works better then IBIS. However i found that IBIS on the oly was more reliable then OIS on the 14-45 lumix that i used in the past.

another interesting tibit noted in the Panasonic press release for the new lens. Pretty close minimum focus range for the new lens with a decent magnification.

"With a minimum focus distance of 0.2m (14-20mm) / 0.3m (21-42mm), the new lens provides a maximum photographic magnification of 0.34x (35 mm equivalent). Seven aperture blades with a circular aperture diaphragm produce an attractive smoothness in out-of-focus areas even when shooting at a large aperture. "

I do not have the 14-42mm with me, only have 45-175mm. Will do some heavy shooting for next few days. Stay tune for review.
