Newbies Outing (Part 13) - 21 July Marina Bayfront Area Photos

Good attempt for #1, although it seems a bit soft (not too sharp) to me.
For me, #2 is underexposed. Most of the buildings are a bit too dark to see the details. Also, I assume in this picture that you are trying to make Fullerton as your main subject? If so, I would probably compose it such that it is placed about one third of the scene and zoom out a bit as to not cut off the maybank tower.

Thanks korbidp3k. I have problem cropping Fullerton . Maybank tower is too high in proportion to FH. I tried allowing the entire Maybank in but that resulted in alot of unwanted area up north. Any suggestion how to solve the problem? Noted the under-exposed .

You post this sort of shot, the newbies will be 'scared'... hahaha. How did they fare? All feel more confident now?

Thanks Kevin! Was lucky enough to catch the rays with Dingaroo, Barnabasngai and Zelot yesterday because we came a bit early.
I'm also newbish lah, still a lot to learn. I'm keen to see the participant photos as well. I think in general mostly was unsure of exposure, metering and also how to get their horizons and vertical straight. Hopefully they can get a better understanding from the outing

Okay, I thought the coloured photos were saturated because of contrast, but yeah, that's what I meant.

Thanks . I think I need to calibrate my home monitor or something :embrass:. When I post my pics last night, it seems ok to me. Now I see from the office monitor, the colors do feel slightly over saturated haha.

Nice capture and like what korbidp3k, the lines are leading the eyes.
I saw 2 cranes on the left side of the photo. maybe leaving them out would be better?

Maybe you can try to take that shot in a portrait orientation instead a landscape orientation. This way you can keep the Maybank tower and Fullerton in the shot and without the esplande highway/bridge

I will prefer color... If u hv one... Yest colors is wonderful.. It simply do the sky injustice by converting to BnW

Probably getting a calibration tool is the best option, but if budget constraints, can consider going to THIS site to see what you can achieve.

#2 gave me a "weird" feeling coz of the extreme distortion, but I think it looks cool if just a single shot in a series.
My favourite would be #4 because of the sense of space and also the lovely capture of the golden light in the background. The CBD buildings also nicely exposed...

#5 seems kinda cramped, but maybe it's because of the small size of the image.
To the left of the leftmost building is something distracting, am I right?

Thanks Kevin for your comments..#5 was taken at the extreme left end lower platform. I actually wanted to "demolish" the extreme left building - too tall for the rest, and further left there were constructions again!

apart from the compositional balance for 3 and 4, felt that ur key focal elements is abit heavy on ur left on both pics.. And buildings "chopped" off for #3 on the extreme left..

Thanks Bryan... I fully agree with you. That location, as I have expressed to some, was not ideal. A better angle will be from Esplanade end before the floating platform to capture the Singapore cityscape.

The lighting is wonderful in this atmospheric panorama scene..
Just thought it's time for me to challenge myself to a nice panoramic photo.
By the way, nice to meet-out with you.

Nice to have met you too. It was not difficult to practise pano shots there as everything was very leveled. Very little distortion and the software did all the rest easily..

The lights on the ground (in coolthought's pano) look interesting. Just wondering if there are other possible foreground elements if aiming towards CBD skyline.
I think I really need to go look-see look-see for myself to get a better idea.

If you want get a focus on the Fullerton, two suggestions that I can think of at the moment is you shoot in portrait mode or you zoom in close to isolate it completely.
PS. just realised that my suggestions are actually 'illustrated' by Gaowei's photos haha.

Yesterday was my second time on the skypark and on both occasions, i managed to bring my tripod and there are also quite a number of other people shooting with tripods. Once you reach the top, there are no guards to bother you.
In yesterday's outing, some bring their tripods inside a tripod bag, some bring together with there camera bags and bro Dingaroo even just bring exposed without any cover. But we all passed through and were able to shoot with no problem

I see, thanks for the input Bryan Yeah I think it's per case basis haha. Should check first if the color version is good. I like this one better in B&W but when I tried to convert my #1 to B&W, don't really like it.. prefer the color version haha.

Haha, no la. Me just happen to be lucky enough .
I didn't really like the color version of that pic. Because the part where the cloud opens up (where the rays are coming from) is actually a highlight (even when I tried to take with -EV) shot and it becomes an isolated pure white in the middle of the blueish hazy sky. That's why I tried to convert to B&W and I find it nicer. And that triggers my previous question on whether B&W or color versions are actually nicer in other ppl's opinion ;p
