Newbies Outing (part 10) - June 6 Sunday, Marina Barrage

First of all, many thanks to dingaroo for organizing evening outing, as well as all seniors who came forth to guide us shooters!

I have decided taken a series of shots as the lights went out of the sky, in an attempt to stitch them up to form a really wide view. However, it definitely wasn't an easy job, so I just stacked the re-sized shots via naive alignment of common elements at the boundaries. Attempted tools like warping initially, and almost ended up warping my own sanity after 3 hours. Here's how it looks like...

a 3-shot stitch was done up with the same procedure, and here it is:

As you can see, distortions like the oval flyer is hardly pleasing, so how can I avoid such foul-ups? Hereby seeking guidance on setting up properly to capture a series of shots that would be suited for panoramic stitching, as well as any tools that could handle the alignment and distortion correction. All advice, brickbats and bouquets are welcome :)

I think you did very well! Maybe you could try ptgui? It's a pretty good panorama programme.

Was talking yesterday between Mr & Mrs scubagolfer, jacobs, and Ghaz. About time to promote these two to Independent Shooter status, huh?

It's true..their skill getting more mature. :D

Funny that you mentioned it. I was thinking of doing a trip, but outside of Singapore. There is this group of islands out in the indonesian territory called Anambas. It is a group of islands. My friend went and I got to know the dude who has been taking people out there. I am considering to go. Problem is, have to go in a group of at least 10 people. I checked, and I think he is the only one bringing people out there. Sort of like undiscovered paradise. Any one interested? This is how a couple of the islands look like. I did not take these pics, posted with permission.

Anyone interested?
bro, am keen on such a trip... ;p

Do keep me in the loop should you wish to organize something like this.
I don't promise I can go, of course, but I will try my best to fit it in!

I thought people go there just for diving ..... you guys dive?
By the way, your friend's trip, can it also include diving ... if yes, we are quite keen.

Wow Mr and MRs Scubagolfer! Well done! I can certainly see improvement in both your shots. Way to go! Good exposure control, great sharpness, great focus. Nice...

Mr scubagolfer, you can try a wider view. The tight view you chose can also work, but you need to give more room to the top of the flyer. And with your choice of framing, the floats on the lower left edge of the frame can get very distracting.

Haha, i wanted wider view, but was using 17mm on crop since my Mrs was using the 10mm
No excuses, skill not up to standard still learning and always learning. But I notice my Mrs take better shots than me :embrass:

Haha, no problem, can be independent shooters ... keke,
But sorry we have to leave early for both morning and evening shoot cannot miss previous makan engagement ... 2 shoots a day really took a heavy toll on us, Mrs was having a headache after first shoot, and me headache whole of Monday...

According to my friend, diving is awesome there. It can include diving, but for those of use who are not diving, we will split up and do different things...

One of my friend told me that, it would be better to use 35mm or 50mm to shot the photos for panoramic to minimize the distortion problem.

I think it would be good also to shot with camera in upright orientation or portrait so that you will have maximum high of view.

Just my 2 cents.

ahkok, nicely done!

You are ready for graduation too.

I don't really see anything wrong with the pictures, except maybe that of noodles, maybe a bit under exposed, but if you over expose it by maybe +1/3, might be better. But that's just me.

Cheers!

for noodles , my intention was to do silhouettes. but outcome not so good. :embrass:

Sorry I missed your photos bro.

Here goes:

#6 is an interesting shot. But IMHO, I feel the tilt does not do much for the pic. It is better to do a straight shot in portrait orientation.

#7 #8 are actually both slightly over exposed. A decrease in 1/3 to 2/3 stops would be take care of it. #7 is tilted to the left. And #8 is almost level. I still see a very very slight tilt to the left. Overall pictures are sharp. #7 and #8 appears a little soft, probably due to the slight over exposure. Overall, I would say your shots are quite decent bro. Well done.

Thanks will try to pp these and see ;p

Hey bro,

i think photo #6 will be better if u do exposure blending... the foreground is too dark IMO ....photo #7 i guess u might consider to do a tighter crop off the top and bottom...

As for candids... for myself when i take candids... i will try to take with the expression or an attitude :)

This my 2 cents worth of cc...... i ain't no pro... :) keep shooting

i yet to learn to do exposure blending. will try more read ups and testings.
same goes for candids and portraits shot.

so far, i mostly took landscape and street shooting. but think i am stepping into portraits, candids and events shooting area.

yes !! more things to learn!!

But sorry we have to leave early for both morning and evening shoot cannot miss previous makan engagement ... 2 shoots a day really took a heavy toll on us, Mrs was having a headache after first shoot, and me headache whole of Monday...

After dinner, I came back home, and plonked on the bed until Monday 2pm! No one woke me up, and had to call office I had to take urgent leave.

Luckily it wasn't a 3-shoot-in-1-day thing, else I'd have woken up on Tuesday morning!

Actually, even the 70-200mm you have can be used for pano! Look at this example from Dresden, Germany, but of course, they used an expansive panning system costing more than US$1.6k, the Gigapan System. But the amount of time they took to stitch it took several days! Imagine the computing power.

But yes, the 50mm f1.8 II is actually very versatile, and I often like to put it on, and not switch to any other lenses, because it is cheap, and light!

Have a good week!

Cheers!

Hello all. First off, thanks to dingaroo for organizing the shoot. And apologies me and my friends were late.

C&C are very welcome. I am a newbie on this, and would appreciate all comments so I can improve.

Thanks again!
