can ask what shutter speed/aperture/ISO u using for the original photo...? is it that the original photo was under exposed cos of the bad light but correcting in photoshop ended up over-exposed...?

anyway i like udder's ice-cream too...!! especially the liquor ice-cream...! although my favourite is still tom's palette...! :D

Shutter speed: 1/20
Aperture: f5.6
ISO: 3600

Yup taken in low light so pump up the lighting but end up durian ice cream over exposed. Still haven't learn how to mask the partial area to exposed in pp

wow.... F5.6...?? i hope u dun mind if i ask few simple questions which require some complex answers -- any reason why you choose such small aperture even in low light...? or did you use auto aperture...?? i guess diff ppl may have different reasons/style/preferences to taking photos..... but personally i seldom use such small apertures... but then i'm kinda (over) obsessed with bokeh and big aperture until you pointed out to me about having too small DOF... den i started to take note of what i shoot and not to overuse big apertures...

but still... typically i like to go for larger aperture... especially in low lighting... cos i know that DOF is hard to correct with post-processing... however if photo is too under exposed it's going to be very hard to correct in post-processing too... that is why my philosophy of not wanting to rely on post-processing so that when i am taking photos i aim to get it right on the spot.... cos i don't know if i'd be able to correct it later or not...

also sometimes i purposely want to focus on part of the food only.... i enjoy taking food photos as it serve as memory of the food... so my aim is very simple: to try to make the food looks as delicious as possible... and to do that... sometimes i go for more artistic shots or shots that specially highlight the best part of the dish to make the food look more delicious.... so i often prefer a narrower DOF actually..... :embrass:

so for your photos... in such circumstances... why don't you compromise a bit and have a narrower DOF to have bigger aperture to better compensate with the low lighting...? in this way the under-exposure may not be so bad and you can correct it later properly...?

Ans is very simple. Because I'm using 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 :)
When I still have my 50mm f1.8 I will shoot at min f2.8.
(Hope I can find time to buy my new len soon :bsmilie:

To me, food photo is not all about bokeh. Viewer may find it uncomfortable to view the photo when the DOF is too thin as they don't know what is this dish is.
I just want to bring out the food colours, sharpness & correct exposure for my photo.

Artistic food shots may make the food look delicious or a turn off to viewer. So really depend how you present it. :)

yeah... that's where practice to find the right composition is the most important i feel.... have to make the food look artistic AND delicious.... and i guess it also depends on individual style too...?
