Got an invite for the grand opening of the new Leica Store at the Raffles Hotel on 7 October. Unfortunately won't be able to attend as i will be overseas. Interesting to know that Leica is finally opening up an official store here. Wonder how their official distributors will be affected.

maybe u will want to pass on the invite ;-)

when can we find the information on the new Leica store at Raffles Hotel? any website?

Dun think the invitation is transferable. Anyway, you can always drop by after the 7th. Its the unit next to Louis Vuitton on the ground floor. There is supposed to be a showcase of images from China and Tibet by Yang Yan Kang (have not heard of him) there, so that should be worth checking out. The other thing mentioned in the invitation is to check out the new range of Leica products unveiled recently at Photokina which i'm not too interested in.

Any idea if this is a Schmidt run store, one of the existing dealers (Gope's, Max or Cathay etc) or a completely new dealer?

There are currently 2 Leica Boutiques in Hong Kong, one in Time Square and the other in IFC.

This boutique will be run by Schmidt. I heard about this some months ago and I was expecting it to be somewhere in Orchard Road. I hope this does not turn Leica into a boutique or fashion item. You will probably see the M9Ti there. After all it is a 'boutique' camera!

walked into the Leica boutique at IFC.. pretty pathetic with hardly any stock for lens or any camera.. not even a display model... empty display cases most of the time..
i wonder what exactly is the point of the boutiques when they can't get any stock to satisfy walk in customers.. may be show case work from some renowned photographers..

subsequently was at iFC again some months later i just walked passed and don't even bother to drop by... to see if they have what i am still waiting for... patiently almost..

I thought nowadays Leica mostly already is a boutique/fashion item. ;p

Quoted for truth.

Was the the Times Square one. The only M9 was in a picture on the wall, the rest of the display were some lenses, compacts and mostly accessories.

Went to visit the Leica London store, it was meh... small in an alley, just like an afterthought...

True, I mean come on, one of the most popular threads in the RF section is "Show us your Leica" thread. But as long as the "Show some RF shots" thread is at the top, we know the Leicas are being put to good use.

You mean its not? Leica has copped out long ago, and recently especially with the involvement of Hermes.

Even in last year's M9 launch event, the management compared itself to prestigious brands like BMW, Chateau Lafite and the like. You know which direction they are taking and it certainly isn't the Leica of yesteryear. It is sure a profitable direction too! This year partner with Volvo design, maybe next year partner with Prada.

EDIT: Not to mention some other forums insist on only using Leica lenses on M9 or else be laughed at. I think with this, they have successfully transformed from a tool company to a brand company. Put the Leica red dot on almost anything and it will sell, at a high premium even.

I don't think is a fair things to says that anything they produce just put a red dot and they will sell. I used to think just like that but after a friend loan to me his Leica I was taken away. I just love the pictures that comes out from the Leica and especially those from their lens it just out of this world. The products they produced are extra ordinary and also expensive if affordable I think a lot of people will buy their products.

Leica is changing their way of marketing...they are now slowly opening up boutique Leica shops around all major cities in the world...with their Leica shop standard red and black display...exactly like those branded luxury goods (Hermes, LV, etc) model...

Been to the two shops in Hong Kong...and one in Taipei Leica Shops...rather small...but is a new marketing direction...not many stock...from what I gathered, these shops are not directly run by Leica ...

LX3/LX5? The red dot placed on those cameras made its price go four-folds.

In business...if the branding works and people are willing to pay...there is nothing wrong at all...if some can find the different and the others cannot...let it be...

Leica cannot force people to buy their stuffs...if you find it not good enough or too expensive...walk away...don't buy...:)

Hermes was a shareholder in Leica until Dec. 2006. The current shareholder bought out Hermes' stake.

The marketing direction has changed to target a new group of consumers. This group is considered buyers of the luxury products. This is fine as long as Leica does not deviate from the original philosophy of the Leica design criteria. Who cares if this group of people pay top dollar for a product and know nothing about photography. Leica is making money from them.

But if the 'boutique' image affects product design and development and the results are products that are not of traditional Leica quality and performance, but just 'fashion' statements, Leica might lose a group of dedicated users.

Leica is already a boutique/fashion statement to some extent. :)

I was at LV, Cologne and wanted to buy a purse for my wife. I saw a men's wallet that I was interested in and wanted to buy. But the sales man said each customer can only buy ONE item. Even I have $$$ CANNOT buy! As they are seriously short of supply.

Well, I made a comment, there are only 2 brands in the world that could do that. Both starts with L... :bsmilie:

And he said, I wasn't the only one who made the comment, the previous day another customer who happens to be a camera dealer in Europe made the statement too!
