Hello... Need your advice..

I was thinking which camera to camera to get. New Fuji F200EXR or used Nikon D40. Actually I just sold my F100 yesterday to get F200 but when I saw a used Nikon D40 is around the same price, I was so tempted. Now I'm stuck between the 2.

One is the lowest end of all DSLR, one is the king of premium PnS.

I sold my F100 cos I outgrew it. So I thought of F200 as it has more functions to let me play for a longer time. Then again, experts always say even the lowest end of DSLR can beat a highest end PnS.

How?.... Can give me some advice?

I would recommend that you give Panasonic G1 a look through.

F200 is just a compact P&S that allows me to bring it around in my bag comfortably. These are my criterias for a small compact.

- portability
- low-light capabilites (high iso & IS)
- big LCD screen

If i need better picture quality, A3 size printouts, etc.... I will use my DSLR ;p

i beg to differ a little.

it depends on how and why almondaddict need a camera. if it's for casual shooting and not expanding further in photography, i think F200 is good enough. most important is he/she needs to understand the differences btw pns and dslr. one main difference btw them is the flexibilities of expansion.

if he/she's going for dslr, i'll be on kopi's side, get D50 at least.

he/ she (April?) needs to consider if he/she is fine with the size of a DSLR? No point getting the DSLR if he/she eventually find it too bulky and not going to bring it out.

Agreed that F200 is good enough if it is for casual shooting, and for a higher quality in photo. (among other pns)

The DSLR offers picture quality that even the best premium camera (LX3 and F200 included) cannot match. But none of them will fit into your pocket or small bag.
And don't con yourself into thinking a DSLR is "cheaper". That's how I started when I went for th Pentax DSLR which is amongst the best bang-for-buck DSLRs around. After a while, you will be tempted to buy new lenses. Typically a DSLR owner will end up with 3-4 lenses, starting with zoom and moving to primes. Luckily Pentax stuff are premium but cheaper compared with the others but I now have a complete set of primes!
The F200 on the other hand is a PnS which you can bring around anytime and best of all, it can capture videos which is good for the kids or some athletic event.
BTW, why did you "outgrew" you F100? The F200 would just be a slightly better F100.
If the F100 does not satisfy you anymore, chances are you are ready to move to a DSLR...you have to decide which is which.
Cheers

Anyone dealt with this camera shop before are they friendly/helpful or just trying to scam people, im always a bit reluctant to deal with camera shops in bottom level of sim lim.

It depends on who you deal with. These small outfits employ lower paid workers.
I normally look for the old man at Alan Photo SLS because he is patient and friendly. One or two others are also friendly if you talk to them nicely. But then again, unless you are prepared to buy from them, do not make them commit alot of time to you. They are paid by commission. I usually ask for the price. If not right, you say thanks and move on. If its slightly higher than what you want to pay, make him ONE offer. If cannot then move on. If price is right, that is when you can ask to see the product , try it out and ask questions.
If you want better service, can try John3:16 or Cathay Photo. Otherwise Alan Photo, MS Color are about the same.

Go for a Canon G10 or Panasonic LX-3 instead. I am very sure you will outgrow the F200EXR very, very soon. Otherwise, buy an used Nikon D50. This camera is much better than the D40 in every way.

Not really. Both cameras serve different needs. I have both for different occasions. On holiday, I will bring the DSLR along for better images. But at shopping centres, weekend outings, I bring the PnS or DSLR depending on how lazy I am ;)

By the way, tried out the F200 yesterday at MS Color. $479. Its not too big which is good. Many claim its only slightly smaller than an LX-3 but I don't agree. The LX3 is so bulky and heavy while the F200 is slim and compact. Anyway, took a few shots without flash but as I was not buying yet, too paiseh to do more tests. Inspite of all the accolades, camera appear to be usable up to ISO400 in low light without flash. At 800 you can see the noise clearlyin the shadow areas although will not be apparently unless you purposely pixel peep.
And to qualify, I can see noise in most of the other compacts like Canon, Pentax and Sony at ISO400 so this is an achievement already.
:)

I got both! No need to compare, they are targeted at different users. The LX3 is the King of Enthusiast Compact, while the F200EXR will be the new King of Premium Compact! ;)

haha..how do you define enthusiast compact and premium compact?

my interpretation:

enthusiast compact
good quality lens
raw support
can produce very good photos
lots of settings to fiddle with
lots of accessories to play with

premiums compact
costs more than it's really worth

G1 bigger than Lx3/f200? smaller than D40?
Didn't really put it side by side as I don't have D40 but generally it is smaller than D40.

I manage to get a quick look at the comparison pictures between f200 and Panny LX3.

My personal opinion is that the LX 3 still resolves much more details than the f200 at Sn mode @1600.

I am not sure if it is just the settings that this guy used.

[EDITED:Sorry I posted the wrong URL previously]
Here are my observations:

1) If you look at the bricks above the lighted word "Colony Dry Cleaners.." you will see that the bricks have a lot of details for LX3 but for F200, the details are blurred

2) If you look at the Visa, Mastercard, etc stickers on the window, you will see that there is still plenty of details in the word VISA for the LX3. For the F200, again everything is blurrred.

But to give the f200 some credits, the grain pattern for the F200 is more film like. For the LX3, you see artifacts which looks digital (JPEG like) on full zoom. This is especially true in the semi-lighted portion of the tarmac.
