To me, keeping box or not is individual. Keeping everything neat, tidy and prefer to keep their equipment in new form. Why not? Some of our friends are a looking in long term hobby, learn from entry model and slowly upgrade. In this manner, the reduce the expenses when they keep they stuffs in good condition.

Don't think about it so much, just get you frustrated. It all money? Or one's intergity? Grandmother stories are common, using multiple accounts to sell their stuffs, last min backing out... And this is buy and sell, depending on demand. Depreciation on a straight line calculation? Unlikely ...

Note: Take special note to sigma lenses in BnS. They are difficult to sell for two reasons. 1) They are 3rd party lenses. Either an ego or lack of total compatibility bugs some ppl. 2) They usually require calibration of some kind. You, as the new owner incurs the 150SGD penalty for the calibration as Sigma Singapore. So do check for sharpness at the widest aperture at least once before you buy.

Point 1: Being a 3rd party lens does not make Sigma lenses less sellable than its counterparts, hence your logic is kinda flawed.

How was your experience selling 3rd party items here in B&S? How long do you need to list the item before it gets sold? :think:

Unless its the less common ones, otherwise the usual period is within 2 weeks.

Yup I agree that the good and popular lenses by 3rd party do get quite an amount of interest.

e.g Sigma 30mm and 50mm.

The above 2 lenses are gems.

You were saying without box there are takers. Of course there will be if you lower your price Its just a vicious cycle. No one NEEDS their box, its just to pass it to the next buyer. If you do not have one, then be prepared to make up to a 50-100 dollar loss.

if a camera shop salesman can convince a person to buy a $5 UV Filter at $15 because the explanation he/she uses is that a filter can prevent unwanted light yadda yadda except the real reason that it's to protect the front element...

then why not? most people believe that having something extra means it's better.

to me having something lesser is better (not having to find space to store a box)...

You don't know. These are TRADERS who buy and sell for profit. To them, a camera and lens is just a THING to buy and sell. They don't love the hobby. They don't love the box. THEY LOVE MONEY. They can sell at higher prices with the box or fob it off to dubious stores who then sell to unsuspecting locals or tourists as Brand New.

People are selling item for almost the same price as brand new. The problem is, sell almost same price as brand new maybe save a few dollars still got people buy. So i tink the market here is just spoilt by such things.

So i tink the market here is just spoilt by such things.

be careful, not all sellers are crap.. if you don't like the BnS here, by all means go to shops.. almost the same as brand new still means cheaper, right? if the condition is like new, i think $100 off from BNP is still acceptable.. used for 1 or 2 days then decided not to keep, for example, the recent X100, of which some people sold it back after only 2 days, only about $150-$200 off the BN price.. i think that's up to the buyer.. you can generalised all the sellers to be crap.. of course if you are selling something that's been around for 5 years and still sell it almost the same price as brand new, then that's nuts.. but if only 1 or 2 days, or even 1 month, in excellent condition, selling at near BNP price is ok, after all, the final decision is on the buyer, whether they still want it or not..

I agree with bayusuputra that a sweeping statement that "sellers in here are crap" is unwarranted. Any sale or purchase should be a willing buyer and willing seller transaction. No one is pointing a gun that you must buy/sell at a specific price. Of course there are some black sheeps out there who do not tell the truth but then again everyone has to exercise prudence.

Not all the sellers are dishonest.
I have bought my Sony A290, 50mm and 75-300mm from 3 honest sellers here.

So far, I have only encounter one dishonest seller here, who lied to me about a "second buyer" trying to bid against me for his lens.
He tried to convince me to "counter bid" with the "second buyer" and buy his lens at a higher price than what he advertise.
One week after I refuse to buy his lens, he offer the same lens in BnS again.

i usually throw away the boxes and just keep the reciept, CDROM and wires etc etc ..... just dont want to clutter my house like a karang guni ..... its just me

When BUYING things, if there is no PROOF of provenance (where and WHAT DATE purchase took place) ..... very simple ......I just assume that buyer bought it WHEN IT WAS NEWLY RELEASED and give him/her an according bid (this is when there are NO CLUES or CODES indicating approximate date of manufacture)

I believe C and N both have mfg codes on their lenses that does this including batch number ..... and L rangefinders have serial numbers tagged to mfg dates and countries of origin too

If you want to believe a seller's claims without proof of reciept and no clues on its age....... its your personal choice ..... can you wait for another piece to come along at a price you are comfortable with and with proof of purchase date?

For me, I treat EVERYTHING ELSE as meaningless CHATTER and NOISE.....
