I am not saying that bikers are very fast when squeezing in between cars in jams. I am just saying its dangerous for both bikers and car drivers if bikers do that. Sometimes there may be a space for the car to change lane to exit but a bike may come from behind without the driver noticing and... bang.

Seen that happened and seen that almost happened countless times. Oh well.. we're all just following the good example set by the traffic police bikers.

I'm a biker as well as driver. I used to spend a lot of time on the roads (trolling roads if you like)driving and riding but have toned down quite a lot nowadays.. (due to high petrol prices) still travel a lot on weekends though.

We can squeeze (why call it 'squeeze' also?) becos there really is a lot of space between cars on each lane and I'm not even on the dotted lines. ;)

If you notice carefully in future, the bikes dun travel on the dotted lines most of the time. We will always be on the side of the dotted line, only when there are 2 cars in parallel will we go onto the dotted line, once passed it, it's back to the side of the lane.

All I can say is, no matter if anyone is riding or driving, it pays to check your blind spot and signal (early) even for those 2 blinkers (signal on, blink twice, off signal) they do give bikers at least 2 seconds of early warning to slow down or swerve away.

i do this. it works far less often than i'd like, but far more often than i expect! :bsmilie:
I used to also signal late and change lane whenever I can. This made the other driver frustrated and horns or headlights starts to go off. But I believe that if we can cultivate ourselves to show others some respect by signalling early, the other driver would also have the courtesy to give way. I know this is not easy to achieve but someone got to start somewhere right? Hopefully 10 years later the road will be a better place to be in.. :bsmilie:

Actually , I think 10 years ago was like that , until Singapore became so developed that everyone needs to rush rush rush , eventually leading to what Yildan had said ...on post #77

Singapore roads are one of the most unfriendliest road in the way, not because of the quality of driving, but the quality of drivers/riders. Put these people on the roads of other countries and we get the same situations.

Drivers here hate one another, whether is uncle taxi driver, auntie bus driver, male, female, pedestrains at road crossings, they hate the rest cause its only ME, ME, ME.

MY time is the most precious, so others should give way to ME. NO one should be near MY car at all so I can speed up/change lane/slow down at will.

I am in a rush, so it is ok for MY taxi driver to speed and stop where I want them to, as in NOW.

I need to get to my destination in the shortest time, so MY bus should not stop at all bus stops, there is no reason for MY bus to be in a traffic jam.

I am going to pick up my loved one, so I can stop illegally for just one minute.

dont quite understand what you are saying...

not easy to overtake if the bike is on the dotted line straddling 2 lanes - even if the car is fully on the right lane. singapore lanes are quite narrow actually.

anyway...all road users need to learn to drive/ride defensively. keep a lookout for other motorists in case they do something funny.
that situation is when the biker is riding 'properly' in the middle of a lane,
driver than overtake without traveling all the way to another lane.

so in this case, the car is straddling between lanes.
and merely a foot away from the bike.

if words can't decribe the situation clearly,
i invite u to ride with me,
and i will ride properly just to show how drivers treat a proper rider.

bikers learn to ride the bikers' way
is due to adaptation.
we learn defensive riding the practical style.

yeap i think it was on the ECP. 17/06

You're splitting hairs to distinguish between wehther its on the dotted lines or not. Point being, drive in the centre of the lane.

Yes check blind spot, and no to squeezing or not riding in the centre of the lanes. Riding off the centre of the lanes increases risk to everyone, regardless of how well someone checks his blind spot.

 you have managed to put in words what I have tried so hard to describe...

btw, I did go for a proper defensive riding course.

vince: I'm not talking about just inches off the dotted line.. i'm talking about 1/3 to the left or right of the lane. It does matter whether it's ON or OFF the line.. the traction is different. Dotted lines have far far far less traction then the asphalt.

I sense this is turning into a bike vs car situation.

well my point still stays the same, and I think all car drivers would be grateful if bike riders stay in the centre of the lane :) Besides, I understand that thats what the driving school teaches bikers to do.

i agree on that... but i also have something to say about bikes in the lane... some really ride damn slow, esp those vespa... on expressway 2nd lane ride at 60km/hr... really can cry when riding behind them...

Maybe the government should mandate all car drivers to take a 1 day bike lesson as part of the beginner's lessons to understand them better...

my mom would kill the govt... hahaha... i tried to take bike lesson but kena found out & banned from riding...

not at my defensive riding course :D

I do travel in the middle of the lane whenever possible but seroiusly that is were cars think that the 'excess' space next to use is wasted road space and start to eat into my lane forcing me out of the lane.

How about when you were getting your license?

Sorry folks, OT here.

I feel that the recent fare hike really kill us if we take cabs/taxi.

From 30secs of waiting to 25 secs, too ridiculous! Imagine how many traffic light in a stretch of road and in the end, the amount which you pay for a short distance (Like you go to work) is more than you go from east to west.

I work in JE area n stay in BB. I suppose that next time I will be paying abt at least $6 if I took a cab if I am late. I couldn't imagine the number of traffic lights along the way which cost the meter to jump and jump like no one biz.

Really sad abt the hike. Recently took a cab back from interchange n the driver took his own sweet time n in the end, we stopped at a lot of red light n the cost, a whopping $5 for less than 5km of distance. We took cab becos we brought things back n troublesome to take bus.

I will restrict myself from taking cab unless carry heavy things. Else I will be wasting $ due to lot of traffic lights.

everything is up, bus fare, mrt fare, cab fare, and even petrol price. the only issue is how much more, but as a percentage of the original price, its prob all evens out.

Nope. Salary is not up :(

kaoz damn pissed just now...

was in a underground carpark, then down a slope cornering, then i din notice there is an empty lot on the side, the car infront of me did not signal his intention to park as well, den when i was next to the lot, the car just swerve & show the reverse light... so naturally i horn him, and i looked behind, since there is already a car in my rear & its on slope, its impossible for me to reverse, so i just stay there, and the bugger came down , shouted hokkien vulgarities at me, den there is another lot in front, so he parked in, i took that lot, den i came down he still hurl vulgarities at me... stupid uncle, so i told him in hokkien, next time show signal so ppl know you want the lot, den he still scold vulgarities to 'insult my parents'... damnit... felt like go infront of him & slap him... heng my gf pull me off... anyway also dun wanna stoop so low to insult his wife, kids & his ancestors there...
