Massive traffic problem in the making?

Yeah.... at the expense of other road users.... Nice...

No $$, don't drive..... Simple....

it is not... "No $$, don't drive"... it is how much savings one can get for the same amount of fuel pumped.

now back to the "No $$, don't drive" statement... so i guess for you is that... when price of let's say... public transportation increases... i bet you'd come in and say... "No $$, don't take MRT/Bus".

A lot of people dont give a damn about $38.35 savings...

a lot of people don't drive so they don't see how much on an impact that savings has. to a motorist... $38.35 savings is a lot.

Just for sharing, I will usually avoid sales. Not because I am rich, I am just an average salaried guy.

The thing is this, for the amount of money you saved, you can't buy back the life you have wasted in the queue. For the "savings" you "lost" (for not going to the sales), you can always earn it back. But for the life you "lost" while queuing, you can't buy it back. They are more things in life than queuing.

That's my philosophy.

Please don't flame me. Just sharing my tots :)

maybe Shell should give every motorists in Singapore a $10 discount voucher for petrol :bsmilie:,then again,i wont get big bonuses at the end of the year...for those who gain by filling at shell...good for u...for those who dont, maybe nextime...:bsmilie:

duh... I always have books in my car... this type of queue is better than normal queue as the auxiliary police allowed cars to drive in batch by batch (my case). so you just have to react every now and then to move your car, and spend the rest of the queueing time doing sth else (for me, reading).

As mohgui had pointed out, if you are filling a full tank, I would expect >$35 saving. I know many people can do many other things to counter back the savings; but there are many who don't mind to wait also. $35 allows me to drive through many ERPs, which people might spend so much time/petrol in an effort to avoid them.

IMHO, those who don't know how to response to a queueing system and don't like the promotion will feel so bad for it. But those who got the full tank and felt nothing lose are so happy for the promotion. Each of us has own thought, right?

Just my 2 cents...

Bunch of idiots.

Engine on idle while waiting for 40-50 minutes leads to extremely high consumption. Moreover, due to incomplete combustion a much higher emission of green house gases:

“The CO2 emissions associated with idling accounts for roughly 1.6 percent of the total U.S. (greenhouse gas) emissions,” conclude the researchers, led by psychologist Amanda Carrico of Vanderbilt University. According to their calculations, sitting in place while the engine is running cumulatively wastes more than 10 billion gallons of gasoline each year.

Higher gas consumption while waiting, higher green house emissions, traffic jams, inconveniencing other people and public transport.

Blame the cheapskate Singaporean consumer always looking for freebies and handouts, and Shell. Someone should hold Shell responsible for this.

ok... tell me what is the right way to offer motorists this discount? get them to drive to their plant at some jurong island at tuas?

i don't know but people who do not benefit from such discount will have 1,001 bad things to say about the event, but when they enjoy some benefit from it (although they themselves put others in some kind of inconvenience) they have nothing bad to say about the event.

just my 3 cents worth.

I would love to hear what you have to say when you are stuck on the road waiting for others to fill up. Who knows? You might want to take up "watching people fill up while you are stuck" as a hobby. Could be fun..... what a schmuck...

Yeah but just don't reduce the roads to a standstill with those thoughts.

So what happened to the time and money of those who had to wait just because some schmuck decided to save a few bucks?

That's a massive inconvenience for a lot of other road users! I live in Chong Pang where there are two Shell station in a less than 1km range! The moment I came out of the carpark, I was stuck in the massive jam! Those queuing up for the jam just to save couple of tens of dollars never thought of the other commuters using the same road!

Simply put, the merchant had caught the Singaporean mindset. Remember hello kitty at Mac? To me, its utter rubbish to queue 3hours for a toy??? But week after week, the queue formation was simply crazy just because these enthusiasts want to collect the complete set.

In the end, i heard of people throwing away these set meals! How sad it was when some had to starve and beg on the street while these grown adults simply had no respect for food.

Typical Singaporean mindset, you're correct. Free, massive discounts, I'll go wait in line.

This boils down to the typical Singaporean and their "me-first" mentality. As long as I get discounts, as long as it benefits MYSELF, as long as it's all about ME, who cares if I inconvenience other people? Who cares if some old lady on a bus couldn't get off at her bus stop and has to walk another extra 100 m? Who gives a crap about other people because it's all about ME.

I hate Singaporeans.

Its like opening up a can of worms. I hate being stuck in the road because some cheapskates want to save small bucks. What ever happen to graciousness?

Hmm.. graciousness in Singapore? Maybe you can give me whatever you are smoking buddy if you thought there ever was any graciousness in Singapore.

Here you go buddy. Use it only when necessary because supply is very limited. ;)

hmmm... interesting thought. don't know why i've never thought of that before. probably can even time which car fills up the fastest.

anyway, since you are so bitter on this Shell thingy, i suggest you bring your thoughts to Shell itself. you can tell them...

1. that they made life miserable for you and others on 24/10/09 from 10am to 6pm.
2. that they should compensate for economic losses from 10am to 6pm on 24/10/09.
3. that they have no respect for other road users.
4. that they created so many schmucks on 24/10/09 from 10am to 6pm.
5. that they (Shell) suck big time.
6. that Esso, Caltex and SP are far better than them.
7. etc...

oh, here is the link (to save you time from searching) to their general enquiries/feedback; http://www.shell.com/home/forms/sg-en/contact/enquiry_order/form_media_corporates.html

complain direct to them and see what they say. there's no point hiding in the comfort of your home and complaining here. be a man... storm their offices and protest! if they don't even bother... bring the matter to your MP.

You are not from Shell??

Stop trying to be a smartass. But then again, I guess we shouldn't expect anything more from you. Obviously your points are written from the viewpoint of a 12 year old, and you are trying to illicit some form of response from Kit, but a lack of response to your childishness is what you shall receive.

In any case, I've already written to Shell and the LTA previously to disparage Shell's actions and their lack of social responsibility.

The 3 main points highlighted in my email, are summarized as follows:
1) Causing massive traffic problems for the general road user
2) Causing problems for public transportation. As highlighted by many others already, those on buses and in taxis were not spared from this chaos.
3) During long waiting times, cars are usually on idle, leading to a much higher emission of greenhouse gases and higher petrol consumption. For a company that says they are trying their best to be an environmentally friendly company (the irony), their actions and the results of their actions show the exact opposite.

Shell's answer to my previous email was that they had set up hotlines for people to voice their concerns to. And that's about it. I'm in the process of writing another lengthy email to Shell's management directly.

LTA's stance is that it's not illegal, so they can't do anything about. Shell probably feels the same way too. As long as there are profits, nothing else matters. Then again, they are an oil company, so we shouldn't expect anything less from them as well.

The main problem lies with a lack of social responsibility by both Shell, and the typical Singaporean, like mohgui. As long as it benefits them, it doesn't matter if they are causing problems for other people. As long as this mindset remains, it will be tough to prevent Shell and Singaporeans from repeating this again in the near future.

With that being said, the fault still lies with Shell, and not the road user. There are just too many Singaporeans looking fore freebies and handouts, and it's Shell's fault for providing these massive discoutns.

I am guessing you didn't read up the last time they offer something like. Go do a search on the Straits Time's forum.
