Hahhahaha. Newbie lah bah. I thought buying online is expensive or more or less the same price.
I am enjoying it. My dad also enjoying it.
Man, my dad has been exploring the toy eversince. Seeing 62 year old man learning videography makes me paiseh.

Can the ball joint at the bottom be locked? I mean can I lock the monopod such that I can free my hands momentarily to let it stand on its own without it tilting or falling over? I don't mean to use it like a tripod but let's say I found the angle that I want and want to keep it that way with me standing beside it without the need to hold on to it.

Nope... I am making full use of it with my 7D for photo/video and AF102. Ans yes, very useful for photo as well.
It great and my S$385/- is well spent.

You can adjust the Allen key screws around the ball joint to tighten, but it won't stand freely when it is extended fully. When your DSLR and lens are on it, when fully extended back to low level it should stand but extend up fully, no no. Even when you managed to stable it to stand when fully extended, don't take for granted it will stand forever. Should always keep in mind of your gear.
If no gear on it, you must find a good spot for the extended monopod to rest on. Be mindful of the fluid head.
Thanks for all your feedback. Manfrotto whould have a sure winner here if they had somehow build in a way to let the monopod stand on it own. But then again it would not be a monopod any more isn't it 
But then again, this isn't your typical monopod since it has 3 legs !!! With 3 legs its no more mono. When I get mine (later) maybe I can rig my own support to make it stand on its own.
The reason I am asking is - a monopod is definitely much more mobile but there would be times when you want to keep a stationary shot even for a short while and if it cannot be locked then this choice is limited. I don't think I will be able to hold a shot entirely with just a monopod. Well OK maybe for some seconds ..................

It is still essentially a monopod; I shot a live band event in an authorium for a CC last week with Canon 7D plus 70-200L f2.8 with the video monopod.
I have the freedom to shoot photo in vertical mode then turned it horizontially to shoot short video clips. The 70-200L just sat on the fluid head and I sat down on the audience to shoot both video and photo. Its very fun doing that.

Someone actually mentioned about checking in together with the hand carry. It is always good to check with the check in staff as they are the best to advise you.
