ladies and gentlemen the captain would like to remind all passengers that this method of contracting lung cancer is not allowed on this flight in accordance to federal statutes.

Boeing offers a satellite service that can receive a stream of data during flight on how the aircraft is functioning. MAS was losing money and did not subscribe to the Acars service. The system was automatically pinging the satellite anyway.

If it was terrorists, then looks like they did their home work. They picked their target. The airline with no Acars and the airport that does not check passenger manifest for stolen passports.

Uncle Ricohflex, MAS commercial airliners does have ACARS / CPDLC (HF & VHF), ACARS / CPDLC (SATCOM), ADS-B / Mode S / TCAS XPDR, GPS equipped as was stated previously. Those systems are pretty much standard nowadays.

It was the SITA OnAir In-Flight Connectivity (IFC) suite providing telecommunication services (cellular / mobile (date and voice), wi-fi network etc. etc.) for passengers on-board with bandwidth supplied by Inmarsat SwiftBroadband and data link routed through the Inmarsat 3 (I-3) and Inmarsat 4 (I-4) constellation series of geostationary communications satellites that wasn't installed.

We should not gloat at MLY. It is tough on the MLY officials and MAS staff. I think MLY managed it quite well, given the complexity and mystery of the case.
First few days confusion because agencies + military want to protect their vested interests. e.g. how air force explain an unidentified jet with no radio contact flying across MLY and no one scrambled a fighter to check it out.

Not sure if LHL, Lui Tuck Yew and SIA CEO could have done better if it had happened to a SIA plane. Given the Mas Selamat and Woodlands barrier crash cases, it looks like we may be just as clueless.

The worst thing is if it crashed in the Andaman Sea. If it is a simple case of terrorist hijacking plane for hostages, then passengers are still alive.
MLY or PRC can send commandos to rescue. Or since got 1 American, then US can send Seal Team 6.

I really pity the NOKs, this is such an emotional roller-coaster and the end is still nowhere in sight. They need more comic reliefs from the bomohs.

i still don't buy this hijack hypothesis.
the hijacker(s) have:
1. accurately determine the exact moment to strike when the plane entered the malaysia-vietnam atc border
2. pilot a jumbo jet with incredible skill, evading both civvie and military radar
3. took a route that would certainly have raised alarm bells, but (luckily?) never got caught
4. managed to misdirect entire govts
5. subdue entire plane of 200+ ppl

you really can't make this stuff up.

If the hijacker theory is true, the most suspicious person is the pilot, who have many years of flying experiences.

The 9-11 hijackers use flight simulator to familiar themselves with NY city before they proceed with their plan. I suspect the pilot use the flight simulator at his own home to familiar himself with the route that would evade the radar.

If the pilot lock himself in the cockpit, the passengers cannot do anything about it.
When the plane reach the destination, armed accomplices would board the plane to subdue the passengers.

Another suspicious thing is that the transponder is turn off by someone in cockpit.

The only problem with the hijacking theory is that there is no ransom or demand. There is no group that claim responsibility.
