Hi guys,

I'm using a Canon 40D and for low-light, I normally use a Sigma 30mm f1.4. I ike it to take photo of my 1 yr old son. However, given all the barang barang that you need for a day out with children, sometimes its difficult to bring the DSLR if its just to the mall or somewhere 'regular'. Still, it would be nice to capture some shots on these 'regular' times.

I haven't seen many shots of kids with the LX3 and wondering if anyone could share their experiences and kids. I know that its no DSLR and start-up + autofocus is a bit slow... but is it too slow for kids? Thanks in advance.

Hi, I am also using Sigma30 with A300 to take pictures of my always-running 2.5yr old son, which already is a challenge for me to get good shots and lucky enough to have at least 40-50% clear shots.

As with the same reason as you, sometimes it's not very convenient to bring along a DSLR for shopping for some light strolling with the family and got my LX3 as well last month.

So far, quite ok for the optics as it is quite sharp and it's wide. However ISO at 800 and above CMI in my opinion, probably I am using DSLR standard as benchmark...:bsmilie:

Anyway, for PNS camera category, the ISO noise level is considered very good, and since it has wide aperture of F2, then we seldom need to go beyond ISO400 for most shoots. Other PNS with aperture of F3.5 or even F2.8 still need ISO800 or above to get the same shutter speed for the same scene. So it's quite a marvellous thing to have a big aperture.

Since it's a PNS and sensor is not as big as DSLR, so no need to worry that the DOF is too thin at F2. It's quite ok still for group shots.

Yes, the autofocus is not as fast as DSLR but comparable to normal PNS. If you want faster autofocus, I sometimes use face detection so that it can keep tracking my son's face for faster focus when needed.

2 things to note however is the colour although is very rich for scenery, macro food shots and night scenes, but when it comes to portrait shots, I just find the skin tone a bit funny...again I might be comparing to my alpha again...;p

Another is although it is smaller than DSLR significantly, but still not as pocketable as normal PNS, especially with the troublesome lens cap...

So, I still have a 3rd camera which is Sony T90, the slimest one with HD video and optical zoom for video....for normal outing to take candid shots of my son which quality is secondary.

LX3 is for some objective outing where lazy to carry DSLR around...

Ouveture - thanks for the long reply. I bought the LX-3 today. It took me a while since its not available in many places in Bangkok (where I live). It seems to be a very popular camera here as well.

I'm already noticing the weakness compared to my 40D but need to remind myself that this isn't a DSLR. Nonetheless, very happy!

Do you guys think now is a good time to buy a LX 3?
with new of a LX4 floating around, and june/july (the period the LXs are released) around the corner?
what do u guys think?

LX4 or LX5 or whatever they will call it, will probably be out in September. Why wait, the LX3 is a good cam and I never regretted getting it.
There's even a worldwide shortage for this cam. We're lucky we can get it easily in Singapore.

there is never a good time to buy... it's either waiting for the price to fall or waiting for the new replacement WHEN the price does falls. ;)

Hi guys.

i bought a suntax 12M yesterday to match my lx-3 but i'm not so sure as to how much trigger voltage the lx3 could handle or how much voltage the flash emits. i read in one of the threads here that high trigger voltages can damage a digital camera's circuitry in the long run..

would you guys happen to know the trigger voltage limit of the lx-3 or if you're familiar with the flash i mentioned, it's trigger voltage too? thanks!

Panasonic engineers will loose their job and comapny will go bankrupt if no road map for new models. If you have money you can buy now you should buy now. Let those late comers or newer generation to buy the LX4/5/6 :bsmilie:

more MP count does not necessary mean better noise control...and panny doesn't just sell cameras only...fyi.

I'm so frustrated with this Panasonic camera of mine... Lumix FX36.

Can someone please advise if i get the Lumix LX3, will i still get problems like this below? Blurry nightshots even though i used the night portrait mode..

And will LX3 solves those problems such as blurry shots taken indoors without flash?

Is this taken by handheld?

yes. but i placed it on the railings when taking this shot

What you need is a proper tripod, or at least find a more stable support to put your camera on. Railings are prone to vibration from the traffic, especially on bridges. You may also want to use the camera self timer to trigger your shot as by virtue of using your fingers to press the shutter, there will be some unavoidable vibration.

for night shot, i always use the 2second timer. because when you press the click button, you might shake you camera.;)

oh... okok

thanks guys!

will try again next time coz i don't know why i feel so frustrated with this camera and keep finding excuses to get the LX3!

Btw, will photos taken indoor without flash look blurry with the LX3? Thats another common problem i have with this FX36 camera..

indoor shot? wah... difficult qns to answer leh... too many factors!! there is no "magic" camera that will give you blurry free photo shoot!

too many factos to consider
ISO,
lighting conditions,
moving object,
steady hands (of course!)

but with LX3 F2.0, i personally felt it is easier to take "sharper" photos...

Sorry but I have a doubt here. You are using a night PORTRAIT mode for a Night landscape shot. Is this applicable?

Do you have a landscape mode?If yes, use it with a tripod and see how is the results... You can also put to auto mode with a tripod and see if it is sharp. Compare these 2 modes with your night portrait and see if there is a difference...

Haha. i really hope there is a magic camera!!

I hate indoor shots with flash used and always use it without flash but i always end up with crappy photos! :bheart:
