[ Lens ] First review of Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8 OIS

Street price may be around $1450 - $1500 based on 85% - 90% RRP pricing guide consider that 12/2.0 is already $1050. The worthness to me is the high quality wide open at wide angle plus very good quality at tele end.

Your pricing sounds about right... : )

Panasonic says so but I'm a bit disappointed it doesn't have internal focusing.

It incorporates superior inner focus system, which enables excellent resolution and contrast without changing its overall length from full life-size magnification to infinity.

Can't wait for 21 June to get it.

Size is good! If it is that good, and is weatherproof and if its mechanical zoom/focus....its a done deal.

Not weather proof, only additional protection against dust and water.

Hopefully don't have to wait too long between announcement and actual availability. e.g GH2.

dpreview says it's coming in August 2012.

If you haven't seen this, What Digital Camera also did a preview.

For those concerned about the price, remember that the Olympus 14-35mm f/2.0 is nearly double the price at US$2299.

43 competes head on with 135 format lens.

m43 from Panasonic is priced at 70% against 135 format.

m43 from Olympus is priced at 50% against APS-C

Amazon preorder at usd 1299!

I was hoping that US$999 was going to be the RRP. US$1299 is a bit too steep...but then again actual street price in Singapore or hong kong cld be much more attractive.

It all depends on the image quality, doesn't it?

If it delivers better than micro Four-Thirds image quality, then the price isn't bad. You certainly can't expect a constant maximum aperture zoom lens to be inexpensive and good.

You might not want to look at the price of the 35-100mm when it's available. I doubt it's going to be the same or less expensive.

The US999 price was cited in at least one review, not a price that I dreamt up. I certainly am not expecting the 12-35 to be cheap, but above a certain price point, it starts becoming too expensive to me. What matters to me is whether I think it can deliver the value for what it's worth. At $1700, I don't know abt you, but that's steep to me! The IQ wld have to be stellar to command that price. So yes it does depend on IQ, but can it live up to the price? Jury is still out.

I'm not sure what you mean by "better than micro four thirds quality". But my point is that there are other lenses in the m4/3 lineup that can deliver v good IQ that dont cost as much. Of course, there is no single lens that can match the specs of the 12-35 at the moment.

I haven't ruled out buying it yet. Waiting for more user reviews and pictures n of course, actual street price at our favorite shops.

12-35mm f/2 would have been ideal, just like the Oly version. Would have made a differentiation.

It could have weighted 360g++ without the OIS with 400g++ with OIS. And it will not fit any of the cameras as the diameter will be too big (i.e. lens resting on the table and body is floating above).

Additionally, they will charge $2k++ for it and will not be the mainstream performance lens for most people to buy.
