[ Lens ] First review of Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8 OIS

it is constant aperture, weather proved, AF is almost constant, nano -coating with effective range 24-70mm.
looks like the MTF chart is better than some SLR lens 24-70mm f2.8

MTF chart differs from system to system if I am not wrong. Higher value on the m43 does not means better than that of the 135 format lens.

i realise f2.8 is good on my 60D crop, but my m43 GX1 need f1.8 below for subject/bkgd isolation, if this new 12-35 f2.8 is gonna be >1000bucks, i rather have 12mm,20mm and 45mm prime and 14-45 variable aperture to complete my lens lineup.....

Yup, most 24-70/2.8 & 17-55/2.8 (for APS-C) easily cost US$1.5-2K

Yes, but M43 has such good deals like the Oly 45/1.8 and Sigma 19/30mm "Sigmarit" super sharp lenses, I was assuming that it would be cheaper like < $1,000 so a bit disappointed at the price. Even my recent Panny 100-300 gives me 600mm EFL sharp pictures for about $650 (from B&H) so its a huge bargain.

It doesn't make sense to compare across formats - m43 is about compact size after all. Try to be 35mm and things look weirdly disproportional.

There are two ways to see good subject/background separation. One is the amount of blur and the other is the quality of the separation.

No doubt the dof will be thinner on the 3 lens u mentioned. The 25/1.4 is even sweeter than all 3.

Not defending this lens, but I am skeptical after their 45-175 and 14-42 booboo. The selling point of this lens is the weather sealing, constant aperture zoom plus near prime quality, just like what the 43 offerings are. would not buy this lens until more reviews.

Having said these, I will still keep my 20/1.7, 25/1.4 and 45/1.8. Why? 20/1.7 is really a nice lens for food photography on close up. 25/1.4 for portrait and 45/1.8 for that reach. Of course all 3 gives the low light capability over the Trinity zooms.

Imagine, 7-14@300g, 12-35@305g, 35-100@550g, 100-300@520g, FL600R@270g and E-M5@450g. Less than 2.5kg and we can travel around the world from 7-300mm (14-600mm against 135 system).

Of course we can use light stuff like FE, 12/2.0, 20/1.7, 45/1.8, and 45-200.

RRP is SGD1699, street price will be in the range of $14xx.

You hear this first from me

Er, no? RRP is not that price

It's a still a bit mystery what constitute the higher price in m4/3 lens design.

Lumix 20 mm VS PL 25, despite the aperture and faster focus, PL25 is a bit down in resolution compare to cheaper 20 mm.
Olympus 12 VS 45 some say 12 is too expensive while 45 is too cheap?

The price-performance comparison is easier in 4/3 lens, 35 vs 50 macro despite the true macro, 35 lack in form of weather sealed and faster aperture so it's logical if 35 cheaper than 50. 14-54 vs 12-60, the 12-60 bearing SHG and SWD makes it higher price than 14-54.

So despite constant aperture and weather sealed what makes 12-35 more expensive? Perhaps creating compact constant aperture zoom is hard and that's what makes the Price so high.

Looks like a mini-version of the canon 24-70. Hope the zoom and focus rings don't use the same dust-collecting rubber like the panny 25mm. Even if it does, I will buy it if the IQ is good and the price is on the right side of $1500!

Steady la, I knew it couldn't be that expensive :)

How you know its less? :D

if 12mm f2 is going for 1050(US799 photo), 25mm f1.4 820(US539 BH photo) locally now, i guess it'll be ~1450 at least...
which will shun those who wanna keep their camera compact, light and pockets loaded..

def something for those who gotten the grip, omd.. weathersealed lens def attracts them.

but for the money.. mmmm... 12/45/70 + a tele like the 100-300 makes for sense eh?

This is not fly-by-wire right? I see the specs it mentioned "Motorised Zoom - Not Applicable", "Engine Tpye - Not Applicable"

If it is fly-by-wire then I have to reconsider due to the need to have mechanical zoom.

Oops, I stand corrected. Its fly-by wire for manual focussing. Zooming is apparently not.

I hope it's a 'typo' that a lens hood is NOT mentioned in the box contents...haizz, such an expensive lens and to leave out the lens hood would be quite stingy.

That's a Leica trait. Hope Panny is not heading down the Leica way....

Doubt it, so far all Lumix G lenses (if Panny actually makes one for them) have the lens hood included.

EDIT: I don't see Panasonic mentioning 'weather sealing' anywhere in their press release.

I like the metal screw in lens hoods for my m4/3 lenses.. although I admit I dont know how much they help haha. Its just that it looks better (personally) and I dont prefer putting in UV filters so in a way the hood is my 'protection' since the front elements usually are smallish

I'm on the fence with this one but it is really good to see a hi performing zoom lens for the system. I really think it is awesome I have an option to get one when i find the want/need to. More reviews for slow poison plox.
