[kuantoh] Victoria Road Trip 2010

#42 - Also near Loch Ard Gorge is the Thunder Cave. In this shot, the left cave is the Thunder Cave, during, rough weather, the waves crashing into the cave can be quite thundering, thus this name.

#43 - Wildflowers at Daysy Hill Country Cottages. We particularly love this cottage because there is this retired sheepdog, Mili, which simply loves to play with us. The owner told us that Mili, though retired, has been chasing the other pet cat around as though it is the sheep.

very nice locations.

just as a question, i've never seen such colors before, at least not so varied: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1230/5132065936_8ae8ed69a6_b.jpg

did this one had a particularly heavy touch in post process? the blue at the top right is bleeding out of the picture, so i suspect so.

the waterfall in the beech forest seems to have had quite an off WB on my screen - with the water appearing to be magenta... something that i don't see in any other person's picture on flickr.. :dunno:

anyways, congrats.

#44 - A lazy evening at Port Campbell with the pier in background. Notice how the big waves approach the cliffs and soften to smaller waves near the pier. The blurred cliffs was actually due to the sea spray.

Thanks. Colors in the leaves colors were totally untouched. The blue u are seeing at the corners are actually due to the CPL vignetting on my UWA lens. The straight on shot as below, u will notice that the colors are indeed that case. I was not expecting that colors in spring but in autumn, so was pretty awed by the scene too.

As for Hopetoun Falls, lkkang did also raise the same question to me. He did a WB correction for me too but seriously, no defending, the scene varies at different lighting and somehow when the sunlight shone down on the waters, the black and yellows somehow gave a slightly tinted warm yellow to the scene. As for the magenta cast, I suppose it should be due to the ND110 extended exposure. Will post a edited version for "review" soon. I quite like lkkangs reedited version.

Edited: Shot reworked with some hue/saturation adjustment. :)

#45 - I decided to try something different for sunset. Instead of heading to the usual beautiful attractions like 12 Apostles etc, I walked 15mins from my accommodation and found this beautiful farmhouse set with the valleys in background and with the lighting dimming down at sunset, I took this shot with the mist and the sunset colors. Cropped to 20:9 composition, I loved the balance in this shot. The walk back was however in total darkness and I had to rely on moonlight and heard occassional cries. Foxes? Whatever.

#46 - First attempt at star trails stitching. The light trails are that of the rare one or two vehicles litting up the roads. Could not stay too long as the air was simply too freezing and without my gloves, I spent 15mins and head back into my cottage for warmth.
This shall be the last shot at Great Ocean Road before our journey heads up into the Grampians.

very pretty! how long was the exposure for the star trails?

Thanks Jean. For DSLR to capture this is quite impossible as most probably u will get hot pixels with too long exposures. What I did was took 4 intervals of exposure, each 3mins, ISO400, f5.6. Of course shorter exposure time with more intervals over 1hr would most probably yield a nice star trail but alas, the cold forced me to head back to my warm cottage after 15mins.

#47 - On route to Dunkeld, Southern Grampians, we stopped by this small town, Terang. Weather was not on our side today. Terang ("the Tree Town") is a small Australian town situated in Corangamite Shire.

#48 - On route to Grampians Pure Sheep diary, we passed by this magnificent bloom of flowers on Glenleg Highway turn off into the small road to Grampians Pure. The colors were so vibrant that the camera auto white balance almost could not handle (just kidding... not to that extent yet)

#49 - It was so vibrant and bursting with yellow that I simply cannot resist taking this shot from low angle despite the dung and sh1t (of sheep) I stepped on.

Beautiful series
Stuff that popped in my head:
- I remember Thunder Cave was pretty far in, wussed out doing the walk myself :p
- Spent the night in the house directly overlooking the Port Campbell pier, spooky and moldy ol' place! That view is oh-so-familiar
- The edited waterfalls are much better for wb, but I liked the mysterious gloom when it was darker :)
- I love panos and pano crops, admire the dedication to setup and also attempt them with moving waves; on special equipment or just software stitch?

It's very obvious from your photos that you enjoyed yourself, TFS :)

Thanks for dropping by. I did enjoyed the drive and scenic drive.

Thunder cave would require a short steep climb 25meters down. We were saving energy after a few walks so that day was a drive, stop, see, shoot, go event.

We did 2 nights at port campbell but away from the town centre at the outskirts. Basically at night everywhere is spooky coz total darkness and hearing waves crashing and winds howling just adds into the spookiness. Haha...

Pano shots all taken handheld as I am travelling with non-photographer. lol... So everytime my tripod comes out, my dear will give me a face. Haha... All pano shots stitched with PTGui. Waves correction minimally adjusted in PS. Sometimes too lazy, until someone like esther mentioned bout my horizon then i correct.

And yes, indeed, road trips are always enjoyable. :)

#50 - Shadow play at Dunkeld, Southern Grampians with Mount Sturgeon in background.

#51 - Victoria Valley Road offers one of the best views of the 3 mountains in the Southern Grampians. From Dunkeld, this view was still magnificent despite the incoming storm.

#52 - Long exposure of Mount Sturgeon on a stormy evening sunset.

5154459339_352ece8106_b.jpg

#53 - The skies cleared and I am glad I woke up for a morning drive around Dunkeld and Victoria Valley to find this angle overseeing all the 3 mountains in one single line.

#54 - From the same location, I drove closer to the ranges and as the golden light shines upon the mountains and grass, I took 7 shots to stitch this picture with the magnificent colors of the golden light upon the landscape.

#55 - A medium grade walk with a 45 degrees steep incline for 1.2km. This walk is well worth the effort upon reaching the peak whereby we are welcomed by panoramic views of the Grampians National Park from Mount William Lookout.
