KOPITIAM does not accept cash anymore. Is this right?

Exactly, this is another factor for stored value cards that I overlooked - there is no assurance that the company issuing the stored value cards will not close down.

There has been so many cases like:

1. Rental shop ask you to buy coupons to rent videotapes/dvd - shop close down, your coupons can use to wipe your backside.

2. Magazine companies ask you to pay 1 year subscription in advaance - the next thing you know, you don't see any issue after issue 2.

3. Arcade ask you to buy tokens to play games - you can't finish the tokens so you keep them for another day. The next thing you know, the arcade changed to become a bubble tea shop.

I propose that companies should put a guarantee bond (to be updated periodically) with the government equilvalent to the sum they are holding in the stored value pool to prevent funny business happening - and to make sure they dont use the consumer's money as their own investment kitty - whats the difference from us being their venture capitalists?

My Alma Mater uses the Cashcard system in the school canteen.

Good and bad.

Good: No need to carry coins or cash.
Bad:
1)Slow processing leads to longer purchase time and longer queue. Need to slot in, auntie key amount, check/verify with Cashcard DB, approve, done.
2) Lose cashcard means one whole week no need to eat, because it's stored value.

is it like what vince123123 said where you can still pay by cash? if cannot, woah.......:thumbsd:

The school tuckshop case can be differentiated in the following ways:

1. It uses a major card to make payment (Ez Link) rather than to buy yet another stored value card.

And to make it easier for the student, they would have this card because it double up as the student smartcard. This card is given to individual student in Primary 1 and Secondary 1.

I think the cons out weight the pros.

Cannot imagine spending more time need for lunch to que for the card, refund the card. Or wait there for the card to be read. Or the dude infront's card that cannot be read.

Worst thing is lose the card, or go there lao then find out never bring card. Then have to buy one more card.

I will shun away from kopitiam with the card system man.

The only reason I can think of to implement these prepaid card system is to control the amount of money the stall renters pay. I'm sure they're probably going to charge them a % of the amount of money they make and if payments is made by cash, theres no reliable way (other than the honour system) for the management to know how much the stalls are earning.

Then again, this is an example of management forgetting that the consumers are the reason why they have the venture in the first place. Personally, if I have to pay upfront and queue up twice, once for the card and second time for the food, I'll just go look for someplace more "traditional". Not worth the hassle.

Yes you can refund the unused portion - however, do you really want to queue up THREE times each time?

One to buy the card, another time to buy your food, and one more time to refund the balance.

From queue one time to queue 3 times...
You're right. Once I see a kopitiam using stored-value-cards, I'll just walk away. Worst scenario is to go hungry. But in SG, there's always another eating place just around the corner.

can name the kopitiam?

i want to buy the stored value card,
but the compass point branch say dun have must wait,
i wait for few months already

you can sell me your stored value card, since you are avoiding them , 2nd hand price can? :)

How can you force someone to pay by a method? I don't think it's that good.

Me? Never been into one of them. Initially I was thinking so long as I don't lose money through inconvenience (too lazy to Q for refund), I might still try the experience out for the fun of it. But I totally forgot abt the peak hr rush. So, heng lah, haven't got any cards to sell :)

putting myself into the Kopitiam owners shoes...

Now I don't have to give out small change or complain I don't have enough small change for my customers $50 when they buy a cup of tea.

If you can't have change for $50 despite just an 80 cents cuppa coffee/tea, you shouldn't be in this kind of business. A MINIMUM of $200 float in loose change should be enough to start one's day.

That's gotta be the lamest excuse ever if they did come up with some crap like that.

I thought the Kopitiam card is suspended. only those with the old cards can continue to top up and use. They dont even allow me to buy a new card. I still pay by cash in all the kopitiam i goes to.

TS must have took out a S$1000 to buy a cup of coffee. :bsmilie:

Compelling one to go through this system is a hassle for the consumer and this is simply not right.

I will boycott such a coffeshop. And I urge everyone to do so - otherwise if this becomes a success you'd end up incoveniencing yourself by having to queue 3 times

Ok leh..
I always use the card, it gives 10% discount everytime I buy! Why not?

Its the same in Shanghai foodmalls, its really not much of a hastle to refund unused amt if you do not want the card. The topup counter is always empty & anyway the process is very fast and professional..Even in crowded malls, the process is very fast.

Its just a stored valued card like any other for a cashless society. Of course its in their favour but its convenient as well.

This is nothing new, many civil servents are given kopitiam store value card, if the card owner resign, have to return the card.

I wanted to buy the store value card sometime ago, but they have run out the card,
if you pay the food and drinks by card, you get 10% discount, it works like paying staff price for the canteen food.

I think some of you guy blow up the whole issue, you can chose not to eat there, but for someone almost eating every meals at kopitaim, this is a convenient way to them.

Got meh???? Which ministries or SBs???? Then I can put up suggestion :bsmilie: :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

hmm it depends de ba...
would rather them use a common card like the ezlink wor...
then it is more convienient too. anyway adding a new card seems to be more costly to the biz mah...
there is so much assurance and maintenance issue.
