Just picked up the FE 55/1.8. Quick question for those who got it

There will always be buyers who want many/every lenses out there...it's a sickness called GAS. For me the Year of the Horses will mean I'm going to shoot lean. FE24-70/4 fits in well. My next quest will be a good 35mm lens and pair with my 90mm the rest can go. Time to lighten my gear bag!

I like the way u discussed this. There will come a point where we start realizing the need to stop being a gear head and start shooting more :)

I'm sold everything except 35mm , 50mm , 24-80 and 90mm FLs and at this stage now where the aim is to maximize the gear usage.

I am considering off loading those lens I seldom touch also, and to spend more time shooting when it permit....

Was considering a compact cam with just a 35mm only....

ha... i am still hanging on the the canon lenses i really like so that i don't have to repurchase everything when cannon comes out with the next generation of hopefully good full frame bodies

Canon better get their act together fast.. they seems to be losing customers.... and Sony is getting very innovative due to this being their cash cow....

I think EOS M might died faster due to A7... lol...

Th 24-70 is just too big and heavy for me. Currently I carry the 35, 55 and 90mm primes with my A7r and all can AF. I also have the CV15, which you can set at infinity most of the time. They all fit in a Billingham Hadley Small.

The problem with this strategy could be that future Canon sensors exceeds the resolution of the lenses. With the Otus showing what the D800E can do, Nikon shooters must be wondering about their current generation of lenses.

actually when i used my EF adaptor on the A7r, all my current canon lenses show much greater sharpness and resolution vs when I used them on the 5D3. Perhaps apart from the 16-35 with it's weak corners, i think the rest of my EF lenses can comfortably resolve 36 MP

If this was the case, then it would be an extraordinary testament to the quality of EF lenses versus the latest Nikon lenses. If you look at DXOMark, only one Nikon lens (the 200mm F2) comes close to the 29MP resolution of the Otus/D800 and 55FE/A7r. Other than the USD6,000 200mm F2, all the other Nikon lenses are ranked by DXOMark at 23MP or less and therefore cannot do justice to the D800's 36MP sensor.

i think i quoted this lens-rental article before which shows the RF 35mm F2IS with a MTF score of 1045 at F4 on a 5D2, resolving 1400 on the A7r with adaptor. corner performance can't be concluded due to adaptor alignment issues which the article states for example with the left corner being sharper than the right corners etc.

anyway i am still waiting for DXO to test the 135 F1.8 ZA. one sharp lens i have when adapted to the a7r..

What? you mean we buy cameras is not to buy and sell lenses?? You mean it take photos too? Haha..
i myself have learnt to only buy what i need and not overbuy for fun. Although i sold things i dont use only to buy more things i dont use..How many of us have more camera bags that we really need? I gave away so many only to buy more..why is there never a bag that fits what i want!!!

Camera Bags... good one.... I have quite a few free from Camera purchase.... trying to sell the brand new 6 million.... and I have 3 bags, 1 pouch and 1 hostle bag...

By the way..

Are the FE 55 & FE 35 barrel are both made of metal?

Yes, I had read the lens rentals article some time ago. The 35mm F2IS is probably the sharpest normally priced lens that Canon makes. It's possible to estimate its performance with the A7r because its performance is very similar to the Sigma 35mm F1.4, which actually has a higher DXOMark than the 35mm F2IS. DXOMark has tested the Sigma 35mm with the D800 that has a similar sensor to the A7r. The Sigma 35mm scored 23P-Mpix. Extrapolating, the 35mm F2IS will likely be around 24-25P-Mpix with the A7r since it's center is a tad sharper (edge performance trails the Sigma) and the A7r has no AA filter. So Canon's sharpest lens still trails both the Otus/D800 and 55FE/A7r by a considerable margin of 4P-Mpix. It also implies that Canon's sharpest lens cannot fully resolve 36MP. If so, what hope do Canon's lesser lenses have?

I've seen tests of the 135 F1.8ZA and while it's a very sharp lens, it seems to trail the Zeiss APO 135 F2 in sharpness. An APO lens should be better corrected. The APO 135 scores 28P-Mpix on DXOMark with the D800, so its pretty much a match to the Otus and 55FE.
