[Jacobs]Hort Park @ Macro Photography Outing 07th August 2010 (Photo)

These photos are awesome! May I ask if you were using the pop-up flash, or off-camera flash with diffuser? Anyone using tripod?

Thanks

So far all of us shot by handheld without using tripod.
We have people using pop-up flash or external flash with DIY diffuser..;)

Hope this can help to clear your doubt.

Rahman,
Before I joined these CS macro outings, I Googled and Yahooed and looked through a lot of photography websites on macro. I even put in a question in one of the CS threads asking for advice on what lighting equipment is suitable for macro so that I can equip myself before I go and shoot macro with CS groups. I did not get any response because maybe people thought that it is a stupid question.

To help you save energy and time, I advise you to just join one of the CS macro group outings and "in a flash" you would acquire a set of start up technics on how to shoot insect macro and proper method in flash lighting. Organisers such as Peterpan (Benjamin) & Jacobs even provide diffusers on the spot FREE-OF-CHARGE!!!

I have joined 3 such outings and I have learnt a lot and even construct my own flash equipment and saved myself a sum of money.

Cheers.

Thanks for the good advice. I have been reading up, and I did join one macro outing ... came home with my back aching from all the bending down and moving forward and backward :(

I had many soft and blurred photos to show for my effort. Analyzed it down to poor focusing from my handheld position. So, I'm asking if anyone used a tripod. I'm looking at a focusing rail and see if it helps improve my focusing.

As I said, the photos posted here are awesome! I'm asking if you used off-camera flash or just the pop-up flash. I was using the pop-up with a borrowed diffuser. I've since made one of my own but would also like to see if off-camera flash is better.

thanks

Ahhhh... I was at Hort Park yesterday morning till mid-afternoon with a friend for my first macro shoot as well. I recognize LEW from your group photo. We were dragonfly-hunting i guess. ;D

Looking at all of your photos, I guess I have alot more to learn! Keep 'em pictures rollin' in!

Hi m33rkat,
Yes, after the group left, I stayed back because I still havn't got an insect shot that I am satisfied. I shot some flowers as I like flowers and they don't move like insects so the task is not so great, although to get really good exposure and color of flowers is also no picnic.
You're one of the two guys in the pond enclosure?? Perhaps you got very good dragonfly shots?

Hi Nicholas,
As the saying goes: "Rome is not conquered in a day.", don't expect to get pictures like the experts if one is a beginner. They have honed their skills for a period of time. Nothing is 'pai seh" unless you go and steal things. Practice make perfect.
Cheers.

Rahman,

After three macro outings with different groups, I have not seen anyone using a tripod although some of us carried tripods. During the first outing, I saw somebody used a monopod. The simple reason is by the time you set up a tripod, the insect (except a garden snail) would have vanished in thin air!:o
I do not know the delete rate of others, but the lousy pictures that I post in CS so far is about 1:80, that is, for every picture that looks good to me, I have deleted at least 80. Anyway to console myself, it is better than National Geographic photographers where the rate is 1:5000!!!

I believe you are quite young and I guess you probably don't exercise much. That's why you get backache. :o More macro outings will definitely cure your backache. :)

The above is to encourage you not to give up or we may have one member less.

Cheers

thanks for reply. i am also on 7d and sp90 but never get so closed up and sharp. Do you use speedlite such as 580ex as your additional light source? If so, is it bounce card or something else?

I supposed the key is the raynox 250 to get closer? wont it reduce the sharpness in theory?
how much is this raynox 250 and where can i buy this?

Really enjoyed yr series.

As for my series only picture #12 is crop, the rest are orginal size.

I am using SP90 with Raynox 250 and mostly full power flash on bugs and reduced power flash on flowers.

#6 is the most challenging as its so tiny and its on ground level so i use live view, i did my best for this shot.

Mostly i use Setting stated below
F25
Shutter 250
ISO 250

Good shot Bro jacob and SHLEW
try not to crop to much.best is try to get 1:1 on flame

Hi Bro Ben,
Thank you for your comment. Will be careful on too tight crop. Bro Elite 77 also mentioned the same thing #11. Looking forward to joining you during your next outing. Now I feel happier with a little improvement since our last adventure in AMK :bsmilie:
Cheers.

Nice captures bro.. but somehow felt ur pics has a funny WB cast on them, too warm.. :)

Thanks for the comment.

Elite also mention there is a WB problem of my shot..
Till now can't find what is the root cause..:dunno:

Thanks Jacobs for organising the outing. Really enjoyed myself even though it is raining most of the time.

All ur shorts come out wonderful but my favorite shot are those 2 but I think a little white balancing is needed alittle yellow. This is nicely executed, the tone, the bokeh is great.

Master Ken, This is a great shot, nicely composite.

Peztilent, Nice meeting u man. This two are my favorite. Knowing ur set up, I am still amazed at the how sharp those images came out.
