Yah, I agree with u.

Actually I prefer the "traditional" 3:2 view, cos it's easier for me to make 4R prints without having to crop. Think I'm favoring the 800IS a lot more. Will wait to see if they have good offers coming up at the IT fair.

Is there anywhere to set on the camera to make it 3:2 or 4:3?

dun seem to have it based on the specs at dpreview.... it'll be a pretty convenient setting, especially when u have some other cameras that shoot in 3:2 format.

I think very few compacts have 3:2. Pls correct me if I'm wrong. I only know Panasonic. But unfortunately, I am not impressed by their noisy images so will give it a miss. 3:2 format and 28mm focal length will be great to have in a compact.

Ricoh R4 has 3:2 format, 28mm focal length and is quite compact.... and it's probably using the same sensor as Canon S3 IS :)

Wow.. Just read the review. The Ricoh R4 looks like a winner. It has more stuffs than the 800IS! Superb zoom range, and comes also with its own IS. Also about the same size as the 800IS! And oh boy, 3:2 format!! BUT...!

I dunno why but I still feel kinda skeptical. All these sound too good to be true. I also read ricleo's opinions on the R4 here. After doing some research recently on digicams, I realize if u have some fantastic features, something else has got to give.... And I suspect image quality is one likelihood. The false rave over Panasonic for me is a disappointment as I was all set to get it until I realize how bad it's low light and mid-ISO upwards images are. Well, I guess it won't matter to those who don't place too much emphasis on noise.

Time and again, I have tried telling myself to stray away from Canon cams to try other brands...but darn! Somehow I just can't! Maybe I just feel so reassured with Canon, given their long standing reputation. Or maybe.. have I come under their spell?! :bsmilie:

Sigh, so R4, looks like I will give it a miss...

I use Canon 20D as my main camera and the Ricoh R4 as the backup now ;p

can check out some noise comparison that I've done for the R4:

Another review elsewhere:
http://www.ephotozine.com/equipment/tests/testdetail.cfm?test_id=433

Some people reported banding issues, so far I haven't seen it yet (had some images with banding from 20D though :().

But 800 IS is a good choice... fast operations, IS in lens (R4's IS is via shifting CCD, supposed to be not as good), nice looking, etc. Would probably have gotten it if I were not looking for a wide-angle compact.

Hi mpenza,thanks for sharing...

Yah, I'm more inclined towards the 800...

yup, agree with your thoughts and feelings. I set out to buy R4 based on specs, ordered from MS color somemore, but they did not have the set when I went there. I went to PLC show and tried out Sony W100, Panasonic FX01, Nikon P4, IXUS 800 and Benq. In the end, IXUS won me over based on the IS, less noise when zoomed in on LCD. You could see the noise when take at macro mode and zoomed in for all, but IXUS was the cleanest!

Thanks! So I guess 3:2 or 4:3 is dependent on the camera, rather than a setting.

most compacts (except rare cases like the LX-1) have their CCDs in native 4:3 mode. cropping is done in camera to get 3:2 mode, and additional cropping for 16:9 mode.

The Ixus 800IS has a 3:2, but only at 2 megapixels under postcard mode. But since it is all cropping, you can always shoot in the full 4:3 mode and crop in post later.

True. It saves a lot of hassle though and sometimes when u (or others help) take pics in 4:3 mode, there would be some important details at the top and bottom which makes cropping difficult.

Yep... Sometimes i find myself leaving space ard the subject so that i can crop to 3:2 later, else I will have to omit some detail out...

Wonder why they don't make the compact digicam sensors to be 3:2? Since people these days are into 4R prints. Hmm, doesn't make sense to use the postcard mode of the 6MP 800IS and get only 2MP in the end!

But do shops print pictures with a 4:3 ratio?

panasonic, ricoh, etc make compact digicam which supports 3:2 mode (sensor is still 4:3 though).

shops do print pics with 4:3 ratio.

A friend of mine complained that the controls on the IXUS 800IS are too difficult to manupilate. I have not tried it personally. Just his verbal comment on the control buttons.

Comments on this matter, anyone?

it's pretty intuitive to me. guess it's subjective.

anybody has any optimum settings you use for the camera ? :)

Actually what I would complain about would be the lack of controls, lack of the Tv, Av and real Manual modes... haha....whatever controls that are left, are all pretty intuitive and easy to manupilate. Too little controls to manupilate for my tastes :p
